This is actually good?
You're telling me that a Sonic game is good?
WAT |
It feels like playing one of the old sonic games, but 3d. They fix the whole problems with the camera by having a fixed camera, the levels have heaps of alternate paths you can take (I did one of the water levels about 5 times, each time finding a new way to go)
There are a couple of levels that are really really short and my afformentioned contrast issues (The whites don't really seem white, even in the sega title screen) but other then that it's great.
Also gotta give a shout out to the writing in this. It's not great by any means, but the new voice actors are far far better then the last lot (I don't want to strangle tails every time he talks anymore) and it's actually intentionally funny in parts.
Honestly this should have been sonic 4.
Also nvm my last question figured out how to beat him. _________________

Oh god I can't stop playing. I'm having such a blast just wandering around and attempting to reach the alternate paths. I need Yellow Rocket as a permanent power, seeing the whole level via skydiving is so awesome.

I did not hear about this game until recently, although getting mixed reviews I suppose I'll give it a shot this week.

After the reviews I at least plan on giving this one a rent. Haven't spent money on a Sonic game since SA2.

I'm loving it so far. It's not perfect but I reckon it's probably the best sonic game since 3 & Knuckles. I'd say pick it up. _________________

Still loving this game, playing levels over and over to try and get an S rank (do these exist? so far gotten all A's on the first three worlds).
Finding alternate paths, the speedy crazyness of it all and just pure fun.... it reminds me why with some games you really should ignore a lot of reviews and just play it for fun. Sure, theres some issues and it would look/play better in HD and it may not please people chasing the 1992 Sonic Dream but its fun, a return to form and a return to a style of game often neglected on the HD consoles.
My recommendation is that if you like Sonic, played SNES and Megadrive era platformers and wondered what they would be like in 18 years or are just after something thats 'fun' and not serious at all (like most games of the last few years) then charge it.
Im liking it more than COD, Halo Reach and most of the 'big' titles this year. Some friends from Japan came over and were hooked on it after largely being unimpressed by COD or any next gen HD game I had. Thats saying something.
Now off to read that destructoid review and find out why the hate? _________________

I haven't gotten one yet but I'm pretty sure on the map screen when you stand on a level it tells you the time you need to make for an S rank. _________________

Gave into temptation again and played a bit more. While I was sure that Sonic Colours was good, but not "that" good, I then got up to the first Act of the Aquarium levels. My god, water levels are usually one of the banes of level designs, both as a player and as a designer, but the very first Act was so sublime, I was exploring every nook and cranny of the level. And it's huge. I think my first run through it was around the 25 min mark, which is a long time, considering some levels can be done in ~20 seconds.
I loathed most of the water based levels in Sonic 1/2/3, especially since as I was a kid, I got scared the crap out of the breath timer music. Here in Sonic Colours, the level design and aesthetic look of the Aquarium is so beautiful, there are times where I don't give a toss about the whole breathing factor.
Yet to go to the 2nd act, was attempting to find all the elusive red star/challenge ring things. Then I need to S rank it.

Started playing the game today. I am not a HUGE sonic fan since I never owned a sega and my first one was on gamecube funny enough.
Game is pretty amazing. I mean it reminds me of galaxy the way its presented for some reason. The levels have a lot going on. I mean you can finish a level and pretty much skip 80% of it. There are many reasons to go back such as collectables and better ranks and the fact that new wisps unlock which would not have been in earlier run throughs.
The game also looks gorgeous. I mean I forgot I was playing the wii for a second. I really enjoy the level settings and the amusement park theme is right up my alley.
The voice acting is better than old ones and I actually like how the game is trying to be funny. Its actually funny in a lame way. _________________

Didn't realize there was a thread. By far the best thing about this game is that when you finish the levels really open up by offering you the wisp powers in levels where you didn't have them before. Getting those 180 red rings is going to be tough.

The whole game? Not yet. Granted I haven't played much because of Uni work, but I managed to get about 1/2 of the levels I've done at S rank. There are two things you need to do to get it fairly easy in each stage.
One, you need to know the layout of each stage. That's why I usually get the Challenge Coins before trying for an S rank so I can explore all my options.
Two, is to ABUSE the colour powers. They grant so much bonus while in effect (Drill, Frenzy and Laser especially) up to a certain time limit within each level. You basically have to stay in that colour power as much as possible and yet still get to the end within the soft time limit without getting hit in case you still need that extra padding from the time/ring bonus.
Most of the time I finish the level already at S rank because my score is so high from Wisp abuse.
