I may have the opportunity to purchase a Final Fantasy title from PSN tomorrow (my birthday). I've been a fan of Final Fantasy ever since my first trial of the original release, and I've never really played a 3D title. I understand that all three PSX titles are available to download, but I'm wondering which one is a great introduction to the 3D FF games. If other people could let me know how they find them, then please let me know so I can gauge which one I think I'll prefer! Have a great day! _________________ A man ties three huge balloons to his shirt. Amazingly, he floats! "Cool!" says the man. Lightning strikes one...POP! A bird flies into the second...POP! Isn't VII the one everyone claims as the pinnacle of the series? _________________

I haven't played FF VIII (I have it, I'm just too lazy ) so I can't comment on that one.
FF VII from what I've played (only 4ish hours, lazy again ) is quite good. Most claim it is the best, from what I recall of my limited playtime it was "good".
FF IX was the **** though! Awesome characters, good story and my personal favourite engaging minigames. Chocobo Hot and Cold was crazy fun! As was Tetra Master.
So I'd go with FF IX but I haven't played all of the three comprehensively.
Happy birthday for tomorrow by the way! _________________

Welcome blizZAP.
As already suggested FFVII hasn't aged very well. I finished it as a kid and recently tried to replay it. The 3D models on the static background looks awful and I spent ages just looking where I had to go on the screen.
VIII is my favourite in the series but, like Shadow and Spacecow suggested IX is probably the easiest to get into. _________________

Of the three I also recommend 9. It's the best looking, and the most fun to me. _________________

I say FFVII as it's the worst looking of the three. Work your way up the graphical chain I reckon, otherwise you'll play IX and then go to play VII or VIII and be shocked when you see how they look in comparison. I always play through a series in the order it was released. You get more of an appreciation of the improvements (both in gameplay and graphics) between games. _________________

I remember reading about FFIX years ago, and I liked the fact that it was based on an actual 'fantasy' theme...Final Fantasy VII, to me, looks more like 'Grunge Fantasy'! _________________ A man ties three huge balloons to his shirt. I've always liked FFVIII the most but the general consensus is that VII is the best in the series and undoubtedly the most popular. I say kick the trend and give VIII or IX a go, both are excellent RPGs.

IX would be a fine game to start the 3d experience on, I'm personally a big fan of VIII. I waste hours going around playing Triple Triad. I don't think IX had as good a mini-game in it, but then VII has quite a few mini-games to it at the golden saucer. There all fine games.
It might be a odd reason to suggest a game, but they are long titles, and it can be nice to have something in game to break up the story and battles. _________________

Personally, Pick FF7 or FF9. Final Fantasy 8 has a few things different compared to the other 2 and might be harder to like because of it. FF7 is probably the easiest and has the gold saucer, which is mini game heaven. FF9 has that Hot and Cold mini game and a Tetra Master card mini game but I never got close to understanding that.
I would pick Final Fantasy 7 out of the 3. _________________

Out of the 3, FF9 is the only one i can 100% recommend to you.
FF7 is an awesome game, but it hasn't aged as well as the others and in my opinion isnt as good as FF9.
FF8 isnt a good game to start off with. It does things a bit differently and its not as easy to get into as FF7 or FF9.
I recommend FF9 .

9 is the closest in terms of gameplay, story and general art style to the older FF's. It's also the one I most recommend. I do have to point out that despite all it's wonders, because of how much stuff is packed into the game, battles are slightly slower as the game takes a slight moment for a command to execute. Nonetheless, the cast of characters is brilliant and the story doesn't get too obscure and nonsensical like 7.

I played all 3 on the PSN.
As they say 7 hasn't aged well
8 has a rather weird system....Not a good starting one. It is my favourite because I owned the system and beat the last boss in like 5 hits. But not a good starting point.
I'd go 9 myself, great story, great length and great level up system _________________

I've started with FF8 and then have trouble trying FF7 since I thought it was "slower" story-wise. I guess it doesn't help everyone rave on about that particular scene, which made FF7 epic, doesn't happen til later in the game....
FF8 combat system is difficult to pick up but is also easily abused once you read up on tricks on it.
End of the day, no matter what you pick, play all!. I am soon (I so need to get a Pro Duo) to start a PSX FF marathon and decided to go in order since I was indecisive. I should really also not slack of and finish ff4, last save point before the last boss. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"
