Which is 350 megabyte per second approximately. My values came from 1920*1080*4bpp*30 and converting bits to bytes when I shouldn't have. So scrub my original value. Uncompressed video alone requires 242 megabytes per second when I divide it correctly.

Correct. But if you're playing back a video file inside a game, it doesn't need to conform to the BD movie standard. _________________

Yeah thought this was the case. The only video for game stuff I did was to supply uncompressed footage to the company.
(Is there a standard for videogames? And any info, am curious about it)

Not really, just the preferred codecs as mentioned. It's up to the developer as to how they compress their data. It's not too far out of the ordinary to pick a lower bitrate to fit other resources on the disk. _________________

Mass Effect 2 is a prime example of there being no standard for FMV quality in videogames.
And I really wish there was. _________________

I'm curious, how would you write a standard for quality?
If you said resolution, bitrate or any host of other metrics I'd agree, but quality is one of those hard to pin down things. _________________

If it's all CG then standardised bitrate and res and keyframes and whatnot would be fine. Devs might get pissed about having to license and use specific codecs though.

| Quote: | | No you didn't. Uncompressed movies far exceeed the PS3's BD drive datarate (72 megabit per second, or 9 megabyte a second roughly - a 1080p uncompressed needs 31 megabyte per second for image data alone at 30fps). Lossless compression methods won't win there. Each and every video you view off your PS3 Bluray discs is compressed with lossy compression in the same sense that JPEG is lossy - you generally don't notice it, but you will find artefacts. |
Fine, I saw a very, very slightly lossy cutscene then (good enough to be mistaken for lossless)...
The fact is that the PS3 can do amazingly beautiful looking cutscenes at no extra cost, yet developers choose you put ugly, obvious compression in their videos. Screw the numbers, just look at FFXIII (slightly compressed 1080p), then Resonance of Fate (heavily compressed 720p).
What reason is there that RoF couldn't have slightly compressed 1080p FMV?
| Quote: | What you're really whinging about is that developers compress their movies once and are done with it. Which generally isn't true, each platform tends to have their own preferred compression method. Rather, you'll find they used the same settings for each platform and forgot about it.
|
No I wasn't. I thought that might have been the case, but I was shown wrong by Valkyria Chronicles and Prince of Persia.
Still, I didn't know that different consoles used different formats.
Which makes it even more annoying if all they had to do was change a slider before they clicked "go" in order to make nice looking FMV. _________________

Well, that is what I meant by quality. Technical quality. Mass Effect 2's FMVs are so ugly they look considerably worse than the game does, despite using in-game assets.
Though its pretty clear they're low quality so they could fit on the disk along with all the other game assets. Should have been bigger for PC though, or just run in-engine. _________________

man I'm glad I can't tell the difference.
I never noticed any compression artifacts in ME2 or Valkria Chronicals. (Though I didn't get too far in the latter not up to the bit espoch mentions ) _________________

real problem is the fact that they still use bink video - that encoder is so old , oh and err FMVs are lil different from what gets used in games now - i mean if your calling it " full motion video" then yea there FMVs but if your refering to the format then not so much. _________________

Of course I mean full motion video, not .fmv.
Do .fmv files even exist?

Na, every single cutscene was perfectly fine except that one near the end. Pissed me off so much, as the massive artifacts appeared just when they kissed, and disappeared shortly after. Ruined a perfect n'awww moment. _________________

PC or Xbox? If you were playing on PC at 1920x1080 I'm very, very surprised you didn't notice the low quality of the FMVs. They were all more or less using assets that already exist in the game, with a few additional effects (like better shadows and lighting), though somehow managed to look considerably more murky, muddy, and full of artifacts than the actual game.
The scene where they reveal the Normandy SR-2 was ruined for me by how bad the transition between Shepard + Joker and the ship in FMV was. Crystal 1080p beauty to OH MY GOD WHO SMEARED VASELINE ON MY SCREEN. _________________

Shank on PC. It's definitely a great game, but the default control setup, really? I re-mapped the controls in all of 5 mins and they work miles better, how hard would this have been to do EA? You don't really give a damn about us PC gamers at all >:[ _________________

You're not talking about the transition into film grain used for the cut scenes (that can be turned off if you want)?
Pic below from ME1, but the point remains about the change in clarity:

No, the FMVs. There's a few scattered throughout the game, much like the first one.
EDIT: You know when you're having one of those days where you cant be bothered dealing with people, and then someone starts annoying you with all the little things they do, and everything they do seems really annoying, but you know its because you're irritable so you dont make a big deal about it because you can get over it, but really you're still getting shitty?
Today is one of those days, and the culprit is one of my housemates.
She's a wonderful person and great to get along with, but today has been one of those days where we haven't seen eye-to-eye on things, and she's just said/done stupid crap that's frustrated me.
It began today when I was putting on a second load of washing. Had tons of stuff to wash, had already done a load, and was in the middle of loading my second when she goes "OH...IM GONNA PUT SOME STUFF IN WITH YOU IF THATS OKAY". I had a heap of shit to wash, but I figured I had already done one load so I should let her mix in with mine.
However, her method of 'loading the washing machine' basically consists of compressing as much shit in as she possibly can, to the point where during the wash you have to get up over and over to 'rebalance' the machine. Telling her she's putting too much in doesn't seem to register.
Then she says "I'm going for a drive to the shopping centre, do you need anything?". I didn't, so I said no, but then questioned the crap she had in the machine that was about to finish washing. She looked at me blankly, and after realising I wasn't going to hang out her clothing said "OH! Um. Just leave my stuff in the basket." with a big cheesy grin. Fine. Works for me.
Load finishes, I pull the stuff out. Now, I had only ended up putting three things in; a t-shirt, a shirt, and a jumper. She had heaps of shit in there. Low and behold, she had left a tissue in one of her pockets and there was crap all through my clothing.
The next incident was her loading her old crappy BBQ into my other housemate's car to be dropped off on the side of the road in another suburb while they were having hard garbage. She then, on impulse (she does a lot of stupid impulsive shit) decided that she'd try and wedge this old giant cafe umbrella in the car. The umbrella was here when we moved in, and taking one look at it made it painfully obvious it wasn't going to fit. Lots of "nah"s from her until we finally took it over to the car and she realised it wasnt going to work.
Now there was the housework. We have an inspection tomorrow, which is going to hinge on the future of our lease. My attitude is to get the house clean and tidy, but not to go freaking mental. My housemate (not the one I've been talking about) tends to swing to the latter after having a bad experience with a couple of real estate agents, while the other housemate (the one I've been talking about) is a bit more like me, probably even more relaxed. She has done one thing; clean the stove. It needed cleaning, so yay. Housemate A says to Housemate B 'There's still some stains on the stove, do you think we should get them off?', and housemate A declares 'Nah', because a couple of stains aint a big deal and bla bla bla. Whatever, I dont care, I think it looks fine.
I'm mopping the floors, all of them, and she has the nerve to have a go at me to make sure I'm doing them right.
Then she asked me to set up a network on her Windows 7, to a Windows Vista and Windows XP computer.
I cant wait to just go to bed. _________________

I was just in big W looking at DVD's when i saw in a cabinet the Battlestar Galactica complete series box set. it was marked $40.
i went and asked one of the staff members to get it out for me, but when they took it out they looked at the set behind it and saw that it was $140 so she wouldnt sell it to me for $40.
i thought by law they had to sell it at the marked price if it is incorectly labled? _________________

Nah it's voluntary, found out about it here, had a look around too, a lot of people seem to be having the same problem.
http://www.retail.org.au/index.php/articles/policy/844
Although it is really weird that Big W doesn't follow it when every other woolworths company does >.> i meant he food stores give the first item free then the rest at the normal price and dick smith just matches the price on the shelf if that happens. (that happens too often, it's annoying having to discount something jsut cause whoever did the price changes forgot to remove a price) _________________

Having, worked in retail I would suggest that it depends on the duty manager at the particular time. A good manager will say "let me see what store policy is", a bad manager will say the first thing that pops into their head and then refuse to budge. _________________ Da Bessssss

How I lack self control and have gone and broke the game purchase/backlog rule #1 again. Now, I have the following to play;
Castlevania LOS
Fallout NV
Fable III
Halo Reach Multiplayer (*sorta done with it really, would love to co-op)
Super Meat Boy
last Chapter of Darksiders
Must have more self control. Must wait. Argh. _________________

Well after over 3 years it looks like I need to new PS3.
Some of you may remember my problem with FNV not working but old games working.Well the same problem I had with FNV I am having with SvR 2011.
I don't like the slim PS3's but stuff sending my phat to get repaired.I may as well get a slim instead.
Surprisingly I'm calm and not bothered to much. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.
