Ah, mandatory HDD installs, how I haven't missed you.  Make sure you have at least 4.3GB of free space on your PS3 guys.
Edit: The main menu is pretty cool, the story has a cool little intro cinematic.

I think you're going to like it Leon, the story telling is much better than the original with plenty of in-game cutscenes. You can travel outside of the village now. The online mode is really well integrated, you can even collect ninja profile cards that you can use as an avatar online in the story mode. The village has been completely redone and is now broken up into a series of areas. Art which looks like it was taken right out of the anime is used as backdrops to the areas, it's a cool effect.
It looks like there's a lot more stuff to do (and collect) this time around. Had my first battle, Ultimate Jutsu have been simplified - no button combos.

JB only have the collector's edition, which is $99. Still, you may as well get it there as EB have the standard edition for the same price. I traded in towards my copy as I refuse to pay more than $60 for a game these days. Totally worth it. 
This game is awesome! The Kakashi boss fight was great of course, abd you earn stars for performing well in the quickntime events. Get enough stars (as I did), and you get a cool little bonus which fleshes out the story.
The online trophies are easy. Lars gets his own trophy, haha. I can already tell I'll be playing this game for a long time!

Without spoiling anything for others, can anyone tell me is the next best thing to watching the anime. I am up to date with the jap subs and all that but since some i know are not and are only up to where the english dubs are at (i think they are up to the first major filler arc with that sora dude - close to the asuma arc) my question is - is it a good replacement for the anime and are they going to get most of the story if they pick it up from there. (I know most wouldn't have reached the part yet but judging from what you have played is it a good substitute for the anime?)

I wouldn't call any game a good substitute for the anime it's based off. That said, this game tells the story better than most out there - no filler and it covers pretty much everything and every fight that happens in detail. I've played every Naruto game out there (except for a couple of the Wii ones), and I can definitely say that this is the next best thing to watching the Shippuden anime.

Collectors edition is good. The game is completely separate so I can keep all the goodies (i.e. that AWESOME cover) and trade the game in
It really is the next best thing to the anime/manga. If you know the story, it does flow really well and the battles are like a different spin.
I really like the hand drawn areas over say the 3D model ones. It's just less complex and more enjoyable to explore.
I'm not really down with the combat yet but somehow managed to get S on the first arc. I wish there was a training mode. Seems to be a bit light in options the game. Just story, one off battles and online. Be nice to have a training mode.
Anyway, I like it and looking forward to playing through the story. I think this these story arcs are the best in the entire series. Mainly Sasori and Pain.

Picked up the game last night, haven't had a real chance to properly play it. I did have a quick look last night after the manadatory long install. It's interesting to see that they altered the story a tiny bit to fit into the frame work of the game.
From what I can tell it seems you don't get anything special for having the original Ninja Storm save game.
I can't really trade my original Naruto Ninja Storm in anymore since I got cover autographed by the voice actors.
