It's more like... RPG 3D River City Ransom?
I've never played Shenmue, but... yeah, that's as best as I can describe it (ie. not very well). It's definitely not as skill-based/reaction/technically intense as Street Fighter, and it's definitely more a brawler than a fighter. Not that that's a massive difference.
It's not just the gameplay that makes the game great though, it's just a culmination of everything about it.
Mileage may vary, but the fighting can get a little stale by end-game. You do get new moves over time, but you are, essentially still punching people in the face throughout. Heat moves are always around to spice things up; like wielding a golf club and using some punk's face to tee off, and I quite enjoyed the first time I threw a dude into a police car windscreen, so I can only imagine what other environmental stuff is there.
But the story will keep you going. I didn't play 1 or 2 either, but the recaps were nice and handy. I get the feeling 1 probably has the best story, and 3 does go off to a slow start (which I feel is for the best, since you get to soak in Kazuma without being thrown in the deep end), but it does keep you engaged.
And there's so much extra stuff to do. Not just the billions of sidequests, but Baseball, Golf, card and dice games (although I am pretty miffed they took Mahjong out. I could have played that forever), that weirdly simple yet awesome arcade game that I forget the name of, fishing (getting a Tuna is intense, mang), and other stuff I'm sure I'm forgetting. Oh, Darts and Pool.
Regarding the missing content, I don't really read 1UP.com much, but I do like how they put it: | Quote: | | And if you're all butt-hurt about not having the same stuff as the kids across the Pacific, I hear you, but please believe me when I say that if you allow that butt-hurtedness to prevent you from buying and playing this game, you fail at life |
Although I guess you've already bought it, so it doesn't really apply, but I just like that line.
Okay, I should probably stop gushing about Yakuza 3 now. _________________

Never played River City Ransom, but I've heard of it. Still, the comparisons are all over the shop, so it makes it even more interesting.

Now, that sounds ridiculous! Do game developers or whoever they happen to be grossly underestimate people sometimes? Mahjong is too tough for English people, or something like that. Or too Japanesy. Bah.

Fishing. I'm getting a NIER flashback here. *gulp*

Thanks, Cyph. I figure you all can't be wrong ... and that I need to branch out sometimes and go out on a limb and ... play something I probably would have never looked at before.
Bish, you did a great job there. What you've said has definitely made me curious and very interested. And that last part is very true. It could have been worse, I suppose! _________________

QUESTION TIME
I've been looping a lot of RPG music today. So heres my question: name some of your fave battle/boss theme music.
Right now I'm looping 'The Almighty' from Persona 4, 'Battle for Survival' from Digital Devil Saga 2, 'Burn my Dread Final Battle version' from Persona 3 and one I'm not sure the name of but its for fighting that puppet boss in Cinderella world in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep... or maybe you fought it in Sleeping Beauty place, can't remember.
Also theres a '100 best battle themes playlist on youtube, its fully awesome =)' _________________

There are so many to mention but an old-school pick that sticks out in my mind is that to the Baryberu from Breath of Fire II. You only hear the tune twice during the course of the game but it's a tribute to it's epic nature considering how much the bastard obliterates you in the beginning... _________________

Having just finished Fragile Dreams : Farewell to the Moon Ruins I was just wondering if anyone else has played the game cause as much as I liked the game, I just felt it was better off as an anime / movie.
also in regards to great battle/boss music OropherX, I just notice you're playing this game and this song below has to be my favourite song in the whole game especially when it kicks up on the 49th second.

Hey guys, I'm craving for a good jrpg at the moment (or it can be any rpg really) which can be bought off steam. Any recommendations? At the moment, I have my eyes on Oblivion, but I also want a more jrpg type experience. _________________

You won't see much in the way of JRPGs on Steam unfortunately. The RPG gaming doesn't get much better than Torchlight and Recettear from my experience. I mean, there's always The Last Remnant if you're really desperate, but it's not what I'd call a good game...
OropherX: When it comes to battle music, it's hard to go past the standard battle music in Persona 3 and 4. I love both of those tracks (Mass Destruction and Reach Out To The Truth), I never get tired of them. Both games are just full of great music though, Persona 3 FES's opening and ending music is just awesome! Even the port of the original (Persona Portable) has a really good tracklist, with yet another hot piece of battle music (A Lone Prayer). _________________

Just fininished Terra's story in KH BbS. I've been trying to do the last battle properly but after losing over 10 times I got tired and decided to be cheap and use 2 shotlock commands, then use a mega-ether and use another 2 shotlock commands. The battle was over in less than a min. So glad I randomly made that lightning one, it does a ridiculous amount of hits ie, 2 whole life bars of the last boss in one go =D
Also my PSP power switch is starting to become unresponsive... I might just start to standby it off and let the battery fully drain instead of holding it long enough for it to actually shut down =( Should had just made it like the DS, a button, not a spring <_< _________________

After playing for weeks, I FINALLY finished Persona 3: FES this morning after playing all night I won't type much now as I'm so tired and I'm eager to try out Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep which just arrived. I do want to say that I thought the end boss fight was pretty epic and I loved the battle music. Because of that music, I'm now hoping there is a soundtrack for the game.
***ENDING SPOILERS***
| Quote: | I was so shocked by the ending, having my character just die I thought they would all meet up and be friends for a long time. Just so sad. |
I'm glad I decided to finish off Persona 3 before buying Persona 3 PSP as I've just read that the PSP version is lacking important cutscenes from the original like the ending cutscene.
Well time to check out KH: BBS and Harvest Moon: Hero Of Leaf Valley _________________

I actually plan on beating Persona 3 on wednesday (For an epic B'day).
Anyway on RPG music I just ordered the Persona 3 soundtrack and Persona live velvet room tokyo. Yeah I love reach out to the truth and the harmonious Heaven. Burn my dread is also fantastic aswell as Dante's theme in nocturne also including this boss battle theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmqbhyS-BK8&feature=related
Others include sanctuary by Hikaru Utada which is excellent in the Kingdom Hearts series. Also Three minutes clapping, Calling, Deja vu and Twister are amazing (From The World Ends With You).
Anyway on VC2 I'm on the month August while in Kingdom Hearts 2 I'm up to Pirates of the Carribean world really enjoying them espicially the tweaks in both games.
Prehaps we should start up a game music thread where we post our favourite OST's in games

They might be ancient compared to music nowadays, but the battle music in Lufia 2 is always memorable for me. That includes the battle, boss and Sinistral battles. I also loved the boss theme in Secret of Mana, and the final battle against the is fantastic, too. And I definitely agree with all of you who bring up the Persona 3 and 4 battle music. Particularly 4's battle music for me. I never got sick of it. I want to also mention P3P's FeMC battle music. I had to admit that I wasn't much of a fan of it to begin with, but it has definitely grown on me. I don't think it's as great as some of the other ones mentioned here.
And then there's this one. It's probably my favourite version.
So ... anyone want to sell me on Trinity Universe?
And I can pay for Rorona tomorrow, I just need a victim to help me get a copy. _________________

I've done what I can with Trinity. When have I ever recommended a bad game to you? As for Rorona, I'm always happy to help out. _________________

Is there anyone here that are big fans of the Legend of Heroes series?
Just saw that there is a new one coming out in Japan:

Seems pretty interesting, but whether or not there is a localisation, I guess time will tell. =) _________________

Thanks, Ad. Let me know how much you want or something, and I'll send it to you. I know you've done all you can about Trinity Universe, but ... getting such opposite opinions hasn't helped me at all! I know I need to make up my own mind, though, so I've got some thinking to do, don't I? _________________

XSeed is doing the localisation of Sora no Kiseki FC, SC and the 3rd first. I read somewhere that they will also handle the sequel Zero no Kiseki after the trilogy is completed. _________________ 「貧乳はステータスだ!希少価値だ!」 - 泉 こなた

I re-read what I written and it's wrong!! >.<
What I meant to say was, I read somewhere that Falcom has intention for ZnK to be localised and XSeed has shown interests as well. However XSeed will wait till SnK is completed and see how the sales and uptake is like for Ys and SnK.
Having said that, SnK is going to be a difficult project. Firstly, the SnK series is a translation hell. Next, SnK is story+text heavy and action weak unlike Ys. I doubt it will do well in the western market. _________________ 「貧乳はステータスだ!希少価値だ!」 - 泉 こなた

Here's some gameplay info for
Kingdom Hearts re:Coded
| RPGamer wrote: | Famitsu has recently provided a large amount of information about the upcoming Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. One of the new game mechanics is the "Command Matrix" system. In this game, the commands that characters perform are more akin to equipped items than learned skills. With the Command Matrix, players will be able to fuse two of these commands together, destroying the two original commands and creating a new, more powerful command. One example is combining the Thunder command with the Rise Upper command to get the Thunder Blade command.
Another feature of Re:coded is its variety of options for replaying completed areas. From the world selection screen, the player can choose to play through the area's story again, challenge the area's boss in a score attack mode, or freely explore the area to find optional dungeons and quests. The game will keep a record of the player's best score and how many dungeons and quests have been completed.
Finally, many more details about the game's Tag Mode have been revealed. In addition to traditional things like personal avatars and profiles, players will be able to share dungeon floors. Each player will be able to choose a few variables for a custom dungeon floor which will be exchanged in Tag Mode. When a player collects these, they are combined together into a large optional dungeon called the Avatar System Area that can grow to have up to one hundred floors. These large dungeons will increase in difficulty as the player climbs floors, but offer an opportunity to acquire a lot of items and commands.
In addition to building giant dungeons, Tag Mode has a few other gameplay benefits. Participating in Tag Mode lets a player acquire virtual scratch cards that can provide commands and avatar customization parts, and exchanging information with many other players increases an avatar's happiness level, which improves the drop rate of items in the game. However, it is also possible for viruses to appear and infect avatars. If that happens, the avatar's happiness will plummet to zero and the player will need to dive into the Avatar System Area to get rid of the problem. |
I'm a little bit half-hearted about this game. 358/2 Days isn't the series highlight. And Tag Mode's all well and good for Japan, but they should really figure out something that will work for other countries. (I know they probably won't though.) _________________

We should definitely consider a topic about video game music, sometimes I like the music even more than the game itself. My favorite soundtracks would definitely be from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and Nocturne. The live Persona music is just awesome.
I also really like a lot of Motoi Sakuraba's work. Some of my favorites of his would be the Star Ocean 3, Tales of Symphonia and Eternal Sonata soundtracks.

I haven't played it yet but I will very soon. It was mostly the art style and the trailer that had drawn me to the game so it was disappointing to hear that the gameplay is a bit hit and miss. I liked Eternal Sonata a lot though and it wasn't considered that great so maybe if I go in with lowish expectations I will enjoy it.
