as far as I can tell the trade practices act applies to everything being sold in Australia.

How do they get away with it then? I know that X-Files (this is going back a few years tho.. so things might have changed) DVDs were region locked.. also, what about Blu-Rays.. they seem to be region locked?

Is it that they are region locking it for "PAL" (ie. all PAL based countries) and using that as their method of getting around our trade practises act?

So again, if these rules exist for dvd's, how are Nintendo getting away with it?

It only applies to stand alone movie players, from what I understand.

But the legally shady thing has nothing to do with movies, it's about locking something to a specific region being anti competitive. How is it not anti-competitive on a wii but anti competitive on a dvd player? Also blu-ray players are region locked too arn't they?

I'm trying to find what the result of the ACCC looking into it was but can't find much, just that they were planning on looking into it.

Also of note, the reasons given for the actual dvd region coding is completely irrelevant to games. The main reason given is to prevent dvd's being widely available in a country before the movie is released at cinemas (In the wake of the internet that's completely moot) so I wonder what reason Nintendo actually give for it? I doubt they're just going to come out and say "Well it's cause we like to rip people off"

Perhaps it has something to do with the production and distribution of the medium. With DVDs there are multiple manufacturers of playing devices, multiple production companies, and multiple business strategies at play.

With the Wii, there's only one playing device and all publishers are already paying Nintendo a fee to license their games for the platform. Nobody is competing with Nintendo on a manufacturer front, and all publishers are operating under the same restrictions.

Could be it, but as far as I'm aware blu-rays are all region locked too. And they're pretty much in the same place as DVD players.
