Thread for FFXIV beta discussion. This first post provides instructions on signing up and fixing the updater speed issue.
First of all, to apply for the open beta follow the instructions here: http://entry.ffxiv.com/eu/index.html
If/when you get accepted, you might get an email from the US version like I did - your login details will be rejected. Change https://dev-na.ffxiv.com/ to https://dev-eu.ffxiv.com/ and it will work.
As for updating the game when it first runs, the installer uses torrent protocol and it is configured HORRIBLY. You will be lucky to get 30kb/s and the first file is 5GB. Yeah.
Here is what you do (If you are up to the huge patch skip to 5):
1) Run the updater. When it starts downloading, cancel it and quit.
2) Navigate to your FFXIV patch folder. On windows 7, for me this C:\Users\MYUSERNAME\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta
3) Double click the bca2a8ae folder then metainfo. You'll find two torrent files. Download them in Vuze, uTorrent or any other torrent program. I got up to 2mb/s this way.
4) Keep a backup somewhere of the downloaded files, then copy them into the bca2a8ae under the subfolder "patch"
5) Open the updater again and wait till it starts downloading the next patch. Close it again.
6) This time open folder d96437e6, meta info. Download all torrents.
7) Copy downloaded files to d96437e6, patch folder.
8) Run the updater, it should install the updates you downloaded. At this point they will disappear from the patch folder (which is why I told you to make a backup in case you need to install FFXIV again another day).
Now play!!! _________________

I didn't get much of a chance on FF11 having gotten it too late into it's lifecycle.
Guess, thats why the eagerness for me to participate. I'd like to see how the game plays when everyone is fresh and new again. _________________

Thanks a lot for this Peveus. I couldn't even get the installer to download anything and I didn't want to bother opening a bunch of ports I got it all downloaded in 30 minutes via utorrent =)

is anyone using a gamepad? I've heard it's easier so was curious to hear whether anyone here has used one. I might look into getting a wired 360 pad or just look into having a ps3 controller work for it.
also has anyone seen or know where to find a page which details what every key does? _________________

Hmm, I can't download the files via utorrent, tracker reads that the download is unauthorised with this tracker. Any ideas?

Use Azureus / Vuze
The tracker will not authorise a torrent program you need to be able to use the UDP user group. _________________
