Oh... there's just a few around

Mike your answer's probably in one of them, but...

Sony will wipe the drive you return, likely change the mainboard and drive encryption key. All for free under warranty, or $250 out of warranty.

If you want data and don't have it backed up - a DIY or third party fix may be your best bet.

thx grim , and yea my data isnt quite up to date , was playing bionic comando and wili downloading a game via PSN - oddlliy the fans didn't speed up room was pretty hot - took the HDD out and yea close to the hottest its ever got , beyond that it kept missing the hand shake quite often on boot up , pretty sure its the CPU/gpu problem , on the one hand i no someone whos good with chip boards and what not but would probbly be too busy to help out , on the other hand i know somone whos a bit of an engineer doesn't no anything really about computers except soldering boards etc , what would be the best FAq to follow besides youtube videos - somthing complete with picutres and diograms would be good thx ,

lol not srue how effectvie that would be if not for blowing a heap of dust around / permanent damage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHMW7XR59Fw&feature=related

also after looking a bit more im now not quite srue if its the psu or cpu/gpu - how can i tell aside from taking it apart ?

but yea to note - when i switch it on it gos green then gos yellow for a few seconds wili beeping then kicks in to stand by where the red light repeatedly flash's for a wili

Tough break,

Better back up my data tonight.

Does anyone know if this happens do you lose trophies or do you keep them because they are online?

Nah you can't lose them as long as you sync them regularly.

Pull it apart and give it ago yourself, I did mine a month or so ago, been working fine ever since, only cost me about $10 for some silver thermal paste.

I used a heat gun, and heated up the board as per a few youtube vids but honestly I think the (original) thermal paste was stuffed, and cleaning off the old paste and applying some new paste was the key.

Let me know if you want any more info on what I did.

This just happened to me last night, while playing Demon's souls. I have a slim still boxed from about a year ago when I purchased a Sony LCD TV (free ps3 promo) I wish I could back up my drive and restore to the new ps3! Sony!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like It's $150 @ acegamestore here in Melbourne for a fix they give a 12 month warranty

PS3 Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) Repair
http://www.acegamestore.com/products/ps3-yellow-light-of-death-ylod-repair-1057

They had fixed my blu-ray laser back on 11/9/08 and it had been working fine since then. Until now! icon_sad.gif

You would not believe it, but the "new" slim is off to Sony tomorrow. It stopped reading the disc's
(makes a large ejecting sound after the disc is sucked in)

Just like this youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUPbZqb4mM0

Dead after trying to watch my second blu-ray!! Less than 24hrs out of the box!!!!!

At least it is still under warranty by 2 months!

I've got no idea, it's not something I've looked into before.

call sony support , get them to deactvitcte your PSN AC , take out the HDD and from what iv heard it can be formated in windows using " swis army kinfe" or something

as parts or a if you can clarify it as fixable its worth a bit , tho im not sure any stores take trade ins for it - eb dont , try calling the compney " mod supplier" there in need of parts at the moment , hope that helps icon_smile.gif

Well apart from it shutting down soon after booting up it was perfect. Bought June 07 and never had an issue with it. I still have the box etc that it came in. Just goes to show no matter how much you look after it if its going to break its going to break.

I deactivated it from my account on the computer and ive changed the password too. Im hoping that will be enough. After dinner ill see if I can log in with the old password before it shuts down.

if your worried about it you could always remove your bank details from the AC , but that should be it , and hmm if you can get it to start up then it cant be too bad ( at least no where near fried) it could be that its missing the hand shake ? ie the connecters on the board are hot but try betronics in syd , or one of those other places , if its still starting up then should be easy enough to fix , most places wont charge you to have it looked at , try let it cool down for a few hours - the problem might go away , but it is on its way out .

Smurf80, I did the same thing. My 60gb launch died last week so I bought a slim.

EB have a 320gb Slim (new model only launched a couple of weeks ago) with the Move starter kit for $548. Thats 50 bucks less than the RRP of the 320gb alone. Pretty good if you want the gigs icon_biggrin.gif

I just got the YLOD today on my Phat (originally) 40GB model. 3 years old.

I think ill pick up a new slim PS3 soon when i find a good deal regardless.

Im going to pull it apart and reflow the CPU and GPU tomorrow, im pretty confident i can get it to work and retrieve my data and GT5 disc.
