I've been looking at that and have heard good things, but it's not a traditional Shump is it? I take it they don't release these types of game retail (physical) any more?

The Touhou series are doujin games, usually sold in limited runs at Japanese conventions, thus making copies of them extremely hard to get hold of outside of knowing someone who lives in Japan, or using Japanese mail-order websites (A couple of which have English versions, PaletWeb springs to mind). This is the reason I treasure that copy of Imperishable Night, which I got at an anime con for £5, as I know that finding it was a friggin' miracle.
As for most fans of the series, many of them in despair look for alternative methods of finding them. _________________

There are several stores in Japan that sell them... Actually, I see Quinn has answered...

I really dig the whole gothic theme. The 12 year old witches? Not so much.

I played this in the arcades early this year, and fell in love with it. I was quite upset that the US version was region locked

well it's not but there arent many shmup titles on PS3 as far as I know, odd that Japanese shmup developers prefer the xbox 360
But yea, go for Soldner X, part 2 is coming on Ps3 soon. and besides, you know what they say..beggers cant be choosers _________________

Surely the 1942 HD remake was released on the PSN also? That's probably the closest you're gonna get to a traditional shmup on the PS3. Unless they released Ikaruga on the PS3 as well. Anybody that is looking to introduce themselves to this genre should probably look at 1942 first, as Ikaruga is more about bullet pattern and enemy memorisation, as the enemies themselves are never trying to actually destroy you with their bullets.
Just checked the Ikaruga leaderboards, have plunged all the way down to 297th, was 98th when I initially posted the score. There's just way too many people with too much time on my hands for me to bother cracking even the top 250. If you stop playing these games for a week it's almost as though you never played them in the first place.
Once I grab this new iphone when it's released, I'll give this rRootage a go as well.

That's the best site for shmup info. I've been lurking that site for a couple of years, the guys on the forums are pretty damn hardcore.

I’m not sure I actually remember the first one I ever played (probably one of the 1940’s), but the first to hook me was Truxton. Played it in the arcade way back when then picked it up on Mega Drive, and just absolutely thrashed the shit out of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUnVnb-WRXk
R-Type on the Master System was a game I played religiously. Back then I never managed to down the final boss (I was like, 8, or something), and I kinda feel some closure doing so when it hit 360. I have every R-Type game and love them all. I also enjoy Gradius, but played them nowhere near as much as R-Type.
Still on the Master System/Mega Drive, Xenon 2 Megablast was pretty cool for its time. Remember playing that a lot, actually. Thunder Force 3 was also killer and Fantasy Zone had its charm
I was also big on Raiden and bought and sold my PS1 copy 3 times! Can’t wait for the 360 PAL port. RayCrisis is another I remember playing for a while, but I still have my copy of that.
Anyway, I’ve always been into them and love ‘em to this day, but I’m also a little funny about the way I play them. I can’t play more than 1 at a time and I can't just pick up and play them for short periods, which is probably why I haven’t played Mushi in a while! In saying that I prefer something with a simple premise, but that’s very deep and rewarding the more you put in. I loved Ikaruga back on the Dreamcast (and Cube – yes, I now own 3 copies) but never really took the time to play it to its fullest until I sat with it on the 360. Honestly, it’s thanks to the achievements that I can appreciate the game for what it is – something with a basic concept which has endless depth to it. It really is one of the best shooters around. One day I’ll get around to going for the boards.
Dodonpachi Daioujou on PS2 was another one I played the hell out of. Love it for its straight up simplicity and massive power-ups and solid design. Still one of my favs to this day. Castle Shikigami 2 was another I put some time into.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IL5CS8AssE8
Both Giga Wing 1 and 2 are extreme levels of awesome, and I remember laughing my ass off doubling up with mates trying to 1 credit the game on difficulty 8. The reflect mechanism was something that really appealed at the time and added a whole new level of gameplay. Love both to death.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62domfpuAyM&feature=related
Border Down is another cool one. At the time I remember being impressed at how smooth it ran and how sweet it looked. Reckon I also (ever so slightly) preferred the side-scroller back then, but now I hug both with equal amounts of love.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBwwnLp9lvo
Nanostray 2 is one I’ve played a little of on my DS and it’s actually quite good. Not a massive fan of the portable shooter, but it’s definitely worth a look.
The last shooter I played was Mushi. Now, I absolutely love Mushi, but it’s one of these games which takes a huge effort for me to play. I really haven’t gotten around to playing it much actually (about 8-10 hours in so far and had it since launch!), but will no doubt do so soon. If there was ever a game I wanted 1000pts on it would be this.
There’s more, but it would probably be one-liners and not worth mentioning. That and I’ve probably forgot about a few! But yes, much needed topic.

Both Soldner-X and its sequel are available on PSN right now, and both look very cool. I haven’t played either yet (a time thing), but will be picking them up the second I fire up my PS3, no questions. They are traditional in the sense that they are side-scrollers. Not sure I can see too many resemblances to R-Type, Gradius, Border Down etc... maybe Thunder Force 3... a little. Either way, pretty much your best options on the PS3 for the time being.

I've been hijacking (and forked over the money) my dad's iPhone just to play it. I can't really compare it to the console version, since I haven't played it, but it's a decent game. Certainly blew my skepticism out of the water.

Cave released a teaser for their new IP Akai Katana
Youtube here
| Quote: | -Danmaku type horizontal scrolling shooting game
-Hardcore military shooter
-Each ship has a pair of characters (pilot and gunner?) with specific attacks
-Each ship changes its attacks when you change "mode"
-The characters (enemies, allies, and others - all human) are quite diverse
-Ships are designed as hardcore, 1950s style retro mechas
-Game is designed around destructible objects and dodging bullets - the core elements of an enjoyable STG - rather than obstacles and topography. This gives it a refreshing feeling.
-It has been carefully developed for over 1 year.
-Release in summer/fall 2010 |
I love the character designs for one, i think they're amazing, and the fact it's a military shooter with retro mechas...I'm in love.

Alright ive been playing Ketsui all day today and I was able to complete 2 stages using a single credit (3 lives)
The game is so bloody addictive, makes me regret ignoring shmups for all these years. I am deeply in love with this genre
Hey Slapshackle, how do we compare our scores on Xbox Live? _________________

Nice work, keep plugging away and keep us updated.
I decided to finally man up and go for a 1 credit clear on Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5. I can clear the first two stages without losing a life or using any bombs, but things fall apart on the third level, so I've started working on that.
The great thing about the Cave games are the training sections so you can choose a level with your expected power up levels and work on pattern memorisation. 2.5 hours with level three yesterday and I'm almost getting there. It's always 1-2 lives wasted in this stage, the first half is fairly easy now but the bullets come too fast in the second half.
It's a long road ahead, will need to invest at least 50 more gaming hours on it, but it will be worth it in the end.

I managed to capture Imperishable Night Spell Card No.220 (Scarlet Destiny) today after a multitude of tries, I have a replay, but Fraps is killing my FPS when I try and record, so no upload for the moment. Best I can do is link an example of Scarlet Destiny being captured.
A note on these; As mentioned before Imperishable Night has a spell card practise mode, when certain conditions are met, an extra category of cards ("Last Words") are unlocked, each one requiring a different prerequisite. Every character who appears in Imperishable Night, including the eight player characters has one of these, one of the hardest belongs to series main character Reimu Hakurei. Behold, "Fantasy Heaven". _________________
