After being recommended by someone as the go to guy for Shmups, and talking to them about what to buy, I decided it wouldn't hurt to have this thread.

As posted in the Microsoft thread, Guwange, by Cave, will be recieving a worldwide release on XBLA. Unfortunately date and price for it hasn't been anounced yet.

Set in the Muromachi Period of Japan, you take control of one of three characters, and through six levels fight various demons.

This is quite interesting as Cave released Mushime-sama Futari 1.5 region-free to see if the demand was there, then mentioned that after Espgaluda II Black Label they wouldn't be doing region-free for a while...

At the moment I'm playing a new port of rRootage on my iPhone, which I'm finding insanely addictive. Control the ship with your finger, when you touch the screen it fires. Simple yet effective.

This is the version I'm playing. (It's been ported before apparently, but this one runs better)

I used to be really into free shmups for the PC. My favourite two were Cho 68k and Tumiki Fighters.

Cho 68k is your classic Japanese Shmup, hardcore and very hard:

I don't want to provide a download link in case it's a bad one (since it's abandonware I think), but a quick Google should turn it up.

Tumiki Fighters is a unique little shooter that allows you to build up your ship with the destroyed parts of your enemies.

Download link for Tumiki Fighters: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/windows/tf_e.html

Thanks for making the thread Lapzod icon_smile.gif icon_y1.gif

I am probably one of the worst shmup players out there, recently I decided to get back into the swing of things with Ketsui, so far its a blast although I think I somehow turned on infinite continues, need to turn that off! no fun playing a shmup with infinite lives icon_razz.gif

An expensive import it was, like any current 360 shmup. Though I must say i will thoroughly enjoy it, just like I enjoyed Gradius V on PS2 many years ago.

Hoping to see other PALGners post, in the meantime, I enjoy some Ketsui, which I actually find more appealing than Ikaruga (still a classic no doubt icon_y1.gif)

Treasure are gods of shoot 'em ups. As per my review, if you're a fan of the genre and dont mind importing (and have a Wii), Sin & Punishment 2 is phenominal.

The online leaderboards really encourage getting high scores.

There's a reason Touhou 8 (Imperishable Night) is one of my treasured possessions, not only is it rather hard to get hold of, it gives us such insanity as this:

(Note: I can play the above, but I die a whole lot more)

<3 Ikaruga. One of my favourite games and somewhat of an obsession of mine.

Also I used to play a lot of Blue Wish Resurrection Plus, free PC shmup. Crazy bullet hell but really fun.

Shmups would have to be one of my most loved genres ever, yet it is the one that I know the least about, and dedicate the least amount of time to. I guess it's because it's always a love/hate relationship with one of the only types of games that is purposely designed to kick your arse.

I grew up in the arcades with games like Twin Cobra, Sky Soldiers, Raiden, with xevious and Twin Bee on the NES. Then the SNES and PS came along and I kind of forgot about them, other than the odd R-type game here and there.

I have only discovered these "bullet hell" japanese shooters in the last year or so thanks to Slapshakle and Bloody Tears, I didn't even know they existed. Visually, games like Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5 and Espgaluda II just don't appeal to me, otherwise I'd probably dedicate more time to them, they're just fun enough to boot up every now and then. None have really hooked me the way Ikaruga did when it was released on Xbox Live, I was a slave to that game for a while, and finally 1cc'ing the bastard was the best gaming moment ever. I would love to look into Ketsui if it is similar to Ikaruga.

There really needs to be a western developer to have a go at making some sort of bullet-hell shmup that's more appealing, it's virtually an untapped market, I'm sure it'd probably sell poorly though.

Loving the BGM, just that music alone would make the experience so much less rage inducing icon_smile.gif

EDIT

Quote:

Similar style of shmup but Ikaruga has that unique black/white colour gimmick. Ketsui is more of a traditional shmup in terms of visuals, art and play style. It's all about military warfare, soldiers and male charactes that actually look like guys icon_razz.gif. No weird maids, bugs and princess in this one icon_lol.gif

I think you would like it, after a lot of research I found that this is one of the best (if not THE best) shmup out there, and has a near legendary status in the shmup community. The game came out in 2003 and the PS2 port was cancelled cuz the PS2 hardware couldnt handle it (so the developers say). So it finally came on the 360 in 2010, and after seeing it in action, i gotta say its pretty impressive, one hell of a ...uh...bullet hell.

The music in the Touhou games is absolutely stunning. I have one or two of the OST's on regular rotation on my ipod.

One of my favourites is U.N Owen Was Her. Beautiful.

What's also interesting is there is a whole sub-culture of people in Japan, who remix the songs, cover them, use them to come up with their own music inspired by. One album I picked up last time I was in Japan was a rock cover album.

Edit: Forgot to mention, currently ranked 10th and 13th in rRootage 1B Psy style. Possibly the first time my name has been in online rankings....

Yea I've been trying alot of Touhou music on youtube, amazing stuff! shame these games are not common. Really wish they release some on Xbox 360.

I couldnt figure out how to get rid of the unlimited continues in Ketsui, so I deleted the game from my HDD and started over, back to 1 continue again icon_smile.gif

Wait, so what system is Ketsui on? Did I read "Ketsui in 2010 for x360" correctly, Jahanzeb? Is it out already via Japan/US account only, or is it actually coming to Australia via the marketplace in the near future?

Your Touhou are PC shmups, which is how I got in to the genre in the first place.

The touhou stuff I own.

Iron Attack - Vampire Concerto is the album I mentioned I bought when I was over there. The cd next to it is Subterranean Animism the 11th game in the series (and the first I played)

The book is a fanbook, which features screen shots of spell cards from various characters in the games, along with comments by Marisa...except it's all in Japanese. And also a Marisa plush.

Shmup's are a very niche game, which is a shame as they're so simple and addictive, yet can be some of the trickiest things you can ever play.

Just had a go at Imperishable Night, and it was pretty good. Played a game on normal mode with some chick character and scored 78 million at the 4th stage boss before game over. Quite hard at times as your bullets don't spread very wide, so you have to move with the bosses and some enemies in order to take them down. Hopefully it's compatible with the 360 joystick so I could give it a decent run. The music is much better over Mushihime and Espgaluda II as well. Wouldn't have a clue what everything means on the info bar and the percentage bar at the bottom left of the screen.

Sucks about Ketsui Jahanzeb, I was looking into creating a japanese account and getting it through their marketplace, until I read that it was in disc form. Surely a japanese console wouldn't be too expensive these days with the 360 slim being released, might try looking at getting one.

All the windows Touhou games at present have an English translation patch, might be worth seeking out just so you can read everything.

Imperishable Night is my favourite in the series, as it has a mode by which you can practise against any of the 222 spell cards (Named bullet patterns). Undefined Fantastic Object (Touhou 12) is my next favourite, mostly for Stages 5 & 6, fantastic music and bosses.

As far as music goes, it's one of the two things (Aside from the pretty patterns) that got me into the series, check my posts in this thread to find some of my favourite music pieces from the series as a whole.

EDIT: The stage 6 boss fights on Lunatic from Touhou 11 & 12

Yea mr.cool, I think importing an arcade Japanese/Asian Xbox 360 will be worthwhile for you, there's a bucketload of shmups available for it.

Now regarding Touhou....question is..how do I get hold of these games? Play-Asia has none! icon_sad.gif

Yea listening Quin's selection in the Music thread, fantastic. Makes me wanna Sound Test this series icon_smile.gif

Each time you get gamer over it adds 1 continue until you unlock free play. You can always just keep pressing A instead of start to get game over.

My love for shmups only started in early 2008, a guy I used to play with had a NTSCJ console and was telling me about some of the games he had for it. He suggested I get the trial of Raiden Fighters Aces off the JP marketplace. I was instantly hooked and within a week I'd placed an order over at play-asia for a NTSCJ console, Raiden and Castle Shikigami III. It was a pretty crazy move at the time considering they were the only shmups available.

I'm really wierd with shmups too, sometimes they'll fully take over my gaming and that's all I'll play for a couple of weeks until I burn myself out. Sometimes I can't get the motivation to play them and I won't touch them for a few months. I guess it's the whole love/hate thing mrcool was talking about. It kinda sucks because I never play them for long enough to get good.

As far as games go, I pretty much exclusively play shmups on the 360. Since I'm still new to the genre I've had very limited experience with them on other consoles (besides a few I've picked up for the PS2). My top 3 in no particular order would be;

DeathSmiles: It's the only shmup I own where I actually feel like I have a chance of 1CC'ing it without going insane, well right up until the last stage that is. It's also probably the nicest looking shooter on 360 when in motion. Sometimes when I'm playing I think "this is what Castlevania SotN would be like if it were a shmup" icon_razz.gif. I really dig the whole gothic theme. The 12 year old witches? Not so much.

Ketsui: The newest addition to my collection, also one of the most satisfying. I get lots of how-the-f***-did-I-do-that? moments when I cheat death. The later level bullet patterns are too crazy for my brain to comprehend.

Raiden Fighters Aces: The game that started it all for me. Easily the best value shooter on the console, it includes Raiden Fighters 1, 2 and Jet. It's always fun to fire up for a few rounds.

Thanks for that!!! +100!!

I just went back to free play again icon_mad.gif but this time i decided not to delete the game from my HDDD, so I sent an email to this shmup blogger I know but he hasn't replied it:P. Thanks for clearing that up for me icon_y1.gif

Really wish this was optional, I wanted this game to be mean, not give out free continues! icon_razz.gif
