Shadow, it's working fine. That graduation of colour in the sky is exactly what you want!

Start pointing it at stuff that reflects now and twist away!. Point it at your car from side on, point it at a road, point it at a mirror from an angle. experiment away and have fun!

i made a really crap dodgey rig so i can mount the camera to the car. it didn't really work. i nearly killed the camera too. need to make some revisions. here's the first shot from it. Will to be good to compare this to a real shot when i manage to modify rig.

AHAHAHA, Niiiiiiiiice... I just finished a 3 year stint in a film course... Some of the horror stories ive heard from people trying to get that 'driving along in a car' look.

One idiot was even making a skate movie. Tied a $10,000 dollar camera to a skate board and sent it down a hill for some sweet FPV skate footage.

Did not end well.

I've seen some stuff guys have posted on the FinalGear.com photography forum about car-mount rigs. Quite a few guys there are pro car/motorsports photographers so they know their stuff, but I don't know if I could ever bring myself to trust my camera on some rig when driven at speed, unless it was insured.

When you do a rig shot, you don't actually use any speed. You just push the car at walking pace, open the shutter for a couple seconds and it creates the illusion of speed. that pic there i posted up, i just pushed the car slowly a few metres.

i'm hanging to build a rig but alas, any extra pennies are being absorbed by some wood that some people keep telling me will look like a ahouse eventually :/

haha 10k camera on a skate board! I wish i was there.

Yeah, its easy to do that kinda stuff with a stills camera,... Trying to shoot 'fast car' in 25fps full hd is a pain. In first year i just sped up footage.

Fun fact.

Benny hill styled anything degrades quality. Unless you are... going for Benny hill... styled anything. (I wasn’t)

If your able to build a proper external mount i can't stress the importance of a wind breaker/shield.

Otherwise i love that photo you got, i actually had no idea you were going at walking pace.

i'd love to get into video. always wanted to make a short film, or just to make a video clip to a song i liked. Actually sat down and story boarded a bit of a thing to that music in Kill Bill.

Fetid: Yeah,... Only i did it poorly (so poorly)... On unstable ground. So the car kind of... wobbled as it went. (First year film always has that charming element of fail, not caught anywhere else in the industry)

MaTBoy: Yeah i absolutely love it... I really really miss being able to film stuff, the issue is at this stage of my life i just cant afford to go out and set myself up with a digital video camera/lights/tripod/software and hardware to put it all together.. Not to mention even when you DO have everything you need, actually organizing a half decent shoot costs money.

Its half the reason im really looking to get into still photography, its a different medium almost entirely but i can still push myself in terms of framing/composition and lighting... I'm actually thinking of even putting together a short film in stills. I'm kind of a photoshop nut so i could have alot of fun and really make anything.

Its been great looking at still SLR camera's, ive really had to control myself and not rush out and buy anything just to scratch that itch...

But yeah, always jot down ideas you have in scripts and sketches, i swear the best ideas come when your not really looking for them, and one day if you get the chance to put some stuff into action its great to have a wad of stuff sitting there.

Aw sh*t yeah… guess who just joined this box social.

Just picked myself up a Canon EOS 1000D

Yeah, its slightly more low-brow than some of the higher end models. That being said, for $875.00 I got the camera, and a twin lens kit. Including a EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II and a EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III..

Which honestly at this stage of my life gives me as many options as I need + the ability to upgrade lenses down the track. (Not to mention I’m a low brow kinda guy)

Two set backs. No live view; which is a bit of a problem when taking happy snaps or shooting at some obscure angle, that being said, for the kind of work I plan to do. Doesn’t phase me that much. Also can’t shoot high def video. Which to be completely honest. I actually prefer. If I wanted to shoot proper footage id use a video camera. Would have been nice to play with, but not really worth the extra dosh.

Also yeah, going up to better models would give me better quality in some areas, that being said… at the moment I can shoot 10 megapixels and print out at about A2…

So yeah, really happy with this buy.

Only got about 25 minutes of light when I actually got home… here are a few happy snaps from the first 30 minutes of owning a digital SLR.













Thanks to everyone for the advice, although I went with a diff model, I think the choice to go Canon for the options and quality alone was a massive help.

Gonna play around for a while, then I might actually go about setting up a shoot. I’ll start chatting to a few local models, see what I can drum up. Watch this space.

The 1000D definitely does live view. Here's an infomercial I prepared earlier:

That was one of the reasons I crossed the Nikon D3000 off the list when I was shopping earlier this year (I ended up crossing the 1000D off too and going for the Pentax K-X's awesome sensor).

Edit: Spanca you king of a man you. Yeah; turns out in some deep setting (and in one particuler mode) i can actually live view. Hell yeah. Honestly, you can't beat view finder... although its nice to see i have the option.

Id of found it eventually, i just havnt got around to manual stage just yet. Still in 'oh lets see what this does' mode.

hey guys its another one of these annoying threads but it should be quite easy. icon_smile.gif

So heres the dealio, I've been playing around with my dads 450d and have decided that for my 18th(coming up soon icon_biggrin.gif) i would ask for a DSLR. The maximum my rents would spend is around the $1000 mark. I am able to buy lenses/cards/bags/filters so dont factor them into the price.

I was thinking about asking for a 50D which i can get new for around $800 (body only) and a 50mm cannon lens which i could get for around $100-$120. Then possibly a bag to fill the gap icon_razz.gif.

Heres where you guys come in, suggest flaws in this camera and any alternatives. If anyone presents a strong enough arguement i can go above $1000(i would pay the difference)

There is alot on the 50D in this thread. Read back and you will find some pretty detailed stuff on it. Also some links posted about the 50D.

I will how ever say; don't go out and buy 'the best you can afford'.. sum up what it is you actually want to do, and more to the point what you need.

I was on a similar budget and actually got a 1000D, because i was really happy with what it could do, did all i needed it to do, and came with twin lenses.

Much like everything, the more money you pay the more you get. Getting a camera with a bunch of expensive extras is only useful if you actually plan to utilise them.

That being said, from what ive heard the 50d is a solid build and a good camera, and being a Canon leaves you heeeeeeaps of options in terms of upgrading lenses down the track.

That being said, JB are currently selling the 1000D with a twin lens pack for just under $900 dollars. I absolutely love it.

I suggest doing some foot work, most places let you get the cameras out the glass and give them a little bit of a test run in store. Nothing beats being able to pick something up and get that feel of it.

So yeah.

Very true. You're best off buying the cheapest body that does what you need, then spending what you can afford on lenses or educational material to learn about photography.

A great lens and a good knowledge of lighting/exposure will trump a better body any day.

thanks heaps for your insight, i passed on the option to get a 1000d tlk for just under $700(harveys had em on special)

ive been selling the cameras for awhile and the 50d seems kinda ideal (dont need to do the footwork cause i play with them whenever its not busy at work)

looks like ill get a 50D with the canon 50mm lens for around $1000
