So I finished Red Dead Redemption yesterday...

Quote:
It started off very slow and I was starting to get worried, but it really picks up halfway through Mexico. The ending was brilliant. After John dies and you take control of Jack...you walk into the old house and it feels so lonely. I've never gotten that sense from a game before. Looking back, even though John was a criminal, he was very likable. The whole final act where you train Jack to mature into a man is incredibly well done. Rockstar, giants among men...

But yeah, a truly fantastic game. Not quite as ground-breaking as GTAIV, but it's still the best sandbox game I've played since then. I guess it's hard to sum it all up in one word, but I just loved the fact that it was such a mature approach to gaming. None of the casual garbage that E3 has been spewing out over the past few days.

The best game of 2010 so far and I can't see anything topping it. Oh and the soundtrack was beautiful. I've been listening to it on repeat all week. Can't wait for the next Rockstar masterpiece.

The finall boss was the biggest piece of shit I have ever played.Your guns do about as much damage as jelly would to Superman icon_lol.gif There is an endless stream of respawning enemies that heal the boss. The boss has a 1 hit kill attack and the only way you can not get hit with it is is to use your boost jump. But by the time you land the boss is pretty much right in your face and with a recharge needed to use the boost again, it's pretty much impossible to not get hit with his 1 hit kill move.

In the end I only beat him because I stayed near a healing thing that also replenishes your ammo that was on higher ground and for once the boss couldn't reach me.Well he reached me once but I managed to get him and then myself back to where we started.I just kept on lobbing grenades at him to kill him.

If that never happened, I HIGHLY doubt I would have beaten him.

Finished off Uncharted 2: Among Thieves tonight. A bit behind the times I know but I've been going through a phase where I can't stick to a game and then switch between my 360 and PS3, then swap to the opposite of what I'm playing, then decide I'm hungry and make some toast, and then realise its 1am in the morning and should get to bed as I have errands / work the next day icon_razz.gif. Lately I've been on a game finishing spree and finished off other games such as LittleBigPlanet, and Uncharted 1: Drake's Fortune of course amongst other titles.

Anyway, I felt Uncharted 2 was a lot stronger than number one. You might say this is a given since they have an opportunity to review the game, fix all the existing flaws, find out what the fans liked / didn't like about it and then fix whatever may be wrong with the game and add new things onto it. I'm sure we know this isn't always the case (yes Driver 3 I'm looking at you >.>), but sometimes it works out.

Nate to me through the entirety of 1 and 2 was a strong character, and this is what kept me playing number 1. I really didn't like some of the mechanics in it, and sometimes it was just plain frustrating, but otherwise it was pretty fun and I did end up finishing it. I played the games back to back so I could see the differences and it really was obvious.

The story line in number 2 was a lot better in my opinion, and some of the levels as a result were hella fun. My two favourite levels were by far the stealth level in the museum at the beginning of the game, and the train level just before Tibet. The first game I was happy to put the game down for a while and come back to it, where as I found in the second game I wanted to keep on playing and find out what was going to happen next.

The developers seem to fix some of the problems I noticed in the first one, such as it didn't take as many bullets to kill the enemies. I always thought it was kind of silly that it took six bullets (sometimes including a headshot or two) to kill a bunch of dudes in singlets and shorts, but in the second game it took either a clean headshot or two or three shots to kill enemies. I don't mean it was easier, I just felt it was more realistic.

To end this wall of text (believe me I could write a lot more), Uncharted 2 is a good game and I'd recommend playing it for sure (even though most of you have probably played it eons before myself icon_razz.gif). Solid story line, like-able protagonist, even the support characters were great and just a plain fun game all round.

Hitman 2 and Hitman Blood Money!

I also started playing Hitman Codename 47 but I thought it was really bad so I didn't play it long. I bought them all on Steam a little while ago.

The other two were good! Well I thought Hitman 2 was 'good' but it had too many levels I didn't like much (especially the snowy levels in China..) Hitman Blood Money was just great though, I loved every minute of it!! icon_biggrin.gif

There is something about being sneaky and tricking people into believing you are someone else that I just love. and I loved how all the levels were so open and there are so many ways to complete them. I enjoyed Blood Money the most because the levels were the most interesting, and I thought it felt more polished than the others in gameplay... and of course it was prettier too which is nice. icon_razz.gif I really enjoyed it icon_biggrin.gif

I got around to finishing Nier yesterday after playing it in short bursts over the last few months. It needed more time and effort put into it IMO but it still offers something worthwhile. Some parts are disappointing but then it also does some parts quite well. It's really a mixed bag and difficult to recommend someone to play it or avoid it.

Halfway through the game you'll end up doing a lot of backtracking which felt lazy to me. Thankfully it wasn't too painful considering that by the time you start backtracking you should be tough enough to smash through enemies with relative ease. You don't really need to grind EXP to clear the game on Normal mode, there are a few somewhat tricky moments but nothing that will drive you to tear your hair out.

This game has four endings which require you to beat the final boss four times to watch them all. Conveniently, loading up a clear game save starts you from the midway point of the game, or 'Part 2'. So technically in order to unlock all four endings you need to beat the game once, beat the second half of it twice and then reload the save before fighting the boss for the fourth time and choose a different option to unlock the final ending. Hopefully this makes sense to you all. icon_razz.gif It might sound like a bit of a pain but I feel compelled to get them all. The latter part of the game was fairly good and playing through the game again afterwards apparently adds more dialogue in order to clear up a few things and also add more depth to the overall story.

If you're thinking of getting Nier you should look to pick it up now while it's going for $24. You might be disappointed but considering how cheap it's a risk worth taking. The game may feel slow at times but stick with it, it took me ~17 hours to beat and I went out of my way to do over 20 sidequests. You could rush through the game in less time than that (there's an achievement for beating it in under 15 hours FYI) so if it feels a little slow to begin with it won't hurt to persevere with it a little longer.

Finally, I thought the cast was quite good. All of the characters were fairly memorable, usually the young kids in JRPG casts are annoying, shame on you if you hate Emil. icon_razz.gif I have to make a special mention for Grimoire Weiss, it's like having Alan Rickman in your party.

icon_wink.gif I was a bit vague. I thought that they improved upon a lot of things from the original. Shooting gameplay was tighter and reminiscent of Gears of War (which is a very good thing). The stripped-down inventory system made squad management a lot easier and the upgrade system was well implemented. All characters were interesting and the voice acting was top-notch again. The story was a little weaker than the original but it was still very, very good. They got rid of the insignificant, repetitive side missions and focused more on the story which was good. All in all, an amazing game.

I'm playing SCC on 360. I think the problem was that I was playing a mixture of single player and multiplayer and for some reason that seems to cause it. Will try just playing single player and hope that my save stays intact. An update was released that supposedly fixed this but it still happened post-update. I've already gotten up to the 5th level about 4 times icon_sad.gif

Soap of Death, how did you find the fishing? I could NOT do it!

I'd be happy to give Nier more of a chance if someone could tell me fishing is simple and easy!

It was very rough around the edges, but I can see potential there.

I thought it was pretty bad too, whenever I fished it would always take me a while to get used to the rhythm of when to tap A in order to start reeling in the fish. I would chalk it up as one of the things in Nier that disappointed me, fishing minigames are usually a little tedious but just catching a fish in this game can be much more of a chore than it needs to be. In fact, it should have left on the cutting room floor, the game wouldn't have suffered without it and they could have easily come up with other item Yonah needed to progress the story.

Very annoying. The thing is my save corrupted three times then I applied the update which supposedly fixed the problem and started a fresh game but it happened again. So obviously the update didn't work and nothing has been released since.

Not worth celebrating as if i want the 1000/1000 scire for both games i will need to go back and make sure i don't stuff up (will be harder in Terminator: Salvation due to how glitchy it is and how random happens).

LittleBigPlanet
For quite some time I've been wondering what the whole brew-ha-ha was about this game, both before and after I purchased my PS3. I picked up a copy the other week on ANDY's recommendation, cheers mate.

Where to start (without repeating what many before me have already said)? Graphically speaking the game is stunning, new games hardly reach this level of fidelity. A combination of nice visuals and gorgeous art direction makes this game shine, eyes have never been so lucky. I found that both texture quality and the general level of detail in the worlds to be surprisingly high. I personally love how each game world stands out from others and how players are given a large range of options to customise their Sackboy; nice work MM.

The sound is also the best thing to grace our ears in a long time. From catchy tunes that I can't stop humming and hilarious sound effects, one can tell that MM put as much effort into the audio of this game as they did with the graphics. It's good to see that this much attention has been given to what normally plays second fiddle.

I have never been one to get into customisation in games, so I haven’t dabbled much in that aspect of the game. But from what I’ve seen, there’s a lot there and it’s deep for those who wish to venture forth.

Now, my gripes. There are only two. Firstly, the floaty controls. I didn’t find them to be that much of a problem until the later levels when precision in jumps and runs are required. Far too often I found that I would (unexpectedly) slide off platforms, or worse yet, jumps would not register (this seemed to happen only when near the end of a platform). The running was only an issue when I needed to jump; sometimes I had enough run up for a lengthy jump while other times Sackboy would float in the wind like a feather. Secondly, I despise games that force a multiplayer component into the single player portion of the game. LBP, I’m looking at your multiplayer puzzles that require 4 people. Damn it, I want to collect everything in a sitting without having venture into the wild west of PSN! And lastly, while not a gripe, the later levels do become quite difficult and at times frustrating, so I’m not surprised that some people were unable to finish this.

All in all, another stand out title for the PS3. If you haven’t played it, do yourself a favour and pick it up. Bring on LBP2!

Congrats on finishing LBP, Cyph. Sadly, I'm one of those people that can't finish it. I'm 2 levels away from finishing it, but I can't. Its just to hard for me and after trying numerous times, its just to frustrating.

However I love it, its an amazing game and online is great, so I'm glad you enjoyed it, Cyph.

Ive just this minute finished the God of War Collection for the first time icon_smile.gif I found the first game dragged on a little especially with some of the puzzles but I loved the 2nd from start to finish. I found it very hard to bug GOW3 and not touch it till I finished the first 2 games because I was told the 3rd game picks off right where the 2nd finishes. I am so glad Iwaited as ive just started No 3 and boy have I been missing PS3 graphics!!!

Cyph, I finished LittleBigPlanet not long ago as well and you're right about the strange run mechanics and the jump that sometimes just decided not to, which resulted you in sliding into a pit of burning lava or something else of similar description. This did frustrate me quite a bit, and so did the last two levels, they were so hard! However with patience, persistence and remembering where the hazards and all that were in the levels I eventually got there. I lost count on how many tries it took though. Also the forced multiplayer thing, that was a little annoying on my part too, but I just skipped it in teh end.

The game on the other hand is amazing. Its graphically brilliant and just the amount of creativity and imagination put into the game is amazing. I couldn't get over some of the awesome and sometimes cute things that would appear in levels. One thing that sticks out to me is in the earlier part of the game is if you wanted to get from the ground platform, to a platform above, you had to board a giant shoe in order to get there.

I'm not normally into puzzle / concept type games but I just couldn't get enough of LBP. I loved it (despite how frustrating it did get) and am happy to recommend it to anyone at work. I find my major selling point for the game is people who just want a game where its not too serious, or parents who are looking for games for their children and don't want violent games or games that might be too difficult. You just said towards the end it got hard? Yes, but funnily enough kids seem to do a better job, my Assistant Managers 12 year old girl managed to finish the game on PS3 and is breezing through it on PSP. Also the vast amount of things you can do on line from collecting items to the "wild west of PSN" icon_biggrin.gif multiplayer will make up for the difficulty towards the end.

Got through Ratchet and Clank: A Crack In Time on Normal last night.

I'd heard it was challenging toward the end, but except for the final boss fight, I found it fairly easy. It's also a fantastic game. I loved the inventiveness of some of the weapons, and the level design is really solid. I'm certainly not done with this title yet, I plan to go through a bunch of the side missions, and hopefully try for a platinum. Highly recommend this game.

I just beat Dead Space icon_biggrin.gif. Great game, I don't think I could take much more survival horror for a while after playing it though, it's not that I dislike the genre but it's also not my favourite type of game, I don't exactly enjoy the feeling of crapping my pants. There was no point where I thought the game dragged and although some parts of the story were a bit telegraphed the actual premise was fantastic. The actual gameplay mechanics worked well and unlike a lot of similar games I didn't feel as though the controls or combat were gimped to try and add to the tension. The various puzzles were well done and I'm sure they will be further improved in the sequel. The inclusion of two mini games, a target range and zero-g ball(basketball is space!) were nice distractions as well.

So all in all, great pacing, great premise, great gameplay and some great scares make for a game that I highly recommend if you haven't already played it, and if you can pick it up for $8 like I did then there's no reason you shouldn't grab it.
