Man, this vidjergame thing has come a long way, and this article is an excellent way of making me feel old. Back in my day (Oh God it begins!) the idea that my parents might actually play a game with me was so alien I don't believe it ever came up. _________________

Yer.. my brother is a big promoter of this kind of thought/opinion. Anyway.. I grew up on text-based adventures and games, and I believe those games did infact have a lot of merit to teaching not only problem solving and analytical skills but also basic typing skills, spelling, grammar and reading comprehension..
..videogaming has come a long way but how much of now is just pure entertainment (not a bad thing by any means) and quick thrills (also not a bad thing) rather than providing any true benefit.. I really wonder... _________________

One of the linked source had
| Quote: | On the down side, 40 per cent of those surveyed found it difficult to monitor the most appropriate video games for their children.
Mr McCrindle said: "Overall, the survey found that parents accept video games as a valuable form of entertainment for children, as long as they provide creativity and educational benefits. |
Just fill in more info that the article missed at one of the linked sources.
When I was 5, I had a Spelling DOS game and a Maths DOS game. I used to spend hours and hours every day on it but I loved it. Naturally, I was ahead in Spelling and Maths in school (If only there was a grammar game). When I was 5, I did addition and subtraction. When I was 7, I was already onto fractions baby!!! Although I'm not a maths genius now, it was still good to have that edge. It saddens me to see retail workers even struggle in arithmetic. "Sorry, what's $2 minus 40 cents" (1 KFC worker asking me). "It's $1.60" "Oh, sorry about that, I failed Maths".
And also, I had a Gameboy with 2 games, Tetris and Game and Watch. I was so addicted to Tetris. This had help with shape rotation questions that is often used in those aptitude tests. _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Video games should be treated as any other medium; parents should be involved and pay a vested interest in what ever their children do.

I have fond memories of playing my Commodore 64 and early IBM-PCs (XT, AT, 286, etc) with most of my friends and family. My Dad is a little bit of a gamer too.
As a plus, all that early gaming and tinkering with PCs led to my career in software =) _________________

we always played games as a family growing up.
it started with the 2600 and progressed to the commodore 64 and to this day when my folks come over we still chuck on the latest games. my mum is currently addicted to LBP. it's about time the rest of the world caught up
to be honest i think it's always been the case but with the emergence of the whole casual gaming market it's probably more socially accepted.

This may be true, but it's not saying much. The key is (as usual) moderation. Games are fine every now and then as a means of relaxation and social bonding but there's a limit. It's not great to spend prolonged periods physically doing nothing but sitting in a chair.

Well, when you think about it, playing certain games are equivalent to solving problems that change over time. So while they're (usually) not making you any smarter, they're getting you to think quicker.
Then there are games like Guitar Hero/Rock Band that are about memorisation.
Or at least that's my take on it.
But yeah, all in moderation.
I really shouldn't try to write up thoughtful posts after work -_- _________________
