Stupid SE why does it have to be part of the numbered serious and alienate thousands of people who have no interest playing this type of game online.

Why can't it be FF:Online 2 (Of course a more imaginative name would be needed but you get the point) or something of that nature?

Because Square said so? Their series, they can do what they want. They don't have to exclude certain titles just so you can obsessively say you have completed every numbered Final Fantasy game. If you don't like the game, don't play it. Simple as that.

edit: Must hide my grammatical shame...

Should just be XI-2, same world, same character types and you can transfer names from XI to XIV.

I've pretty much lost faith with this series. After XI, XII and XIII, now XIV... I'm playing IX at the moment and it's better than XII or XIII, and calling their two online games XI and XIV... that makes 4 in the numbered series in a row that are just, to me, crap. I know XIV isn't out yet, but to me it's an MMO, and that's enough to know it's no good. Not an MMO fan.

I agree entirely with Sobriquet. XII had a horribly nothing plot, the thing that saved it and had me pumping 100's of hours into it was the setting (I love Ivalice, having played the 2 handheld tactics games) and the really fun, if not repetetive Side questing.

XIII is missing all of that. except for the nothing plot. That's still there. Everything in that game came out of absoulute nowhere, every boss was a giant space flea from nowhere, and the characters changed their personality in the blink of an eye.

i never had the opportinuty to play XI since I don't have the money to uphold an MMO lifestyle, but i didn't hear fantastic things. That and i don't like them. so yeah, Also agreeing with sobriquet about playing FFIX recently thanks to PSN...

I love IX.... so good. Either way, shame on SE, they've lost the ability to tell good plots, which is why they're slowly changing to MMO's...

I'm relatively new to the FF scene, but I loved FFX and FFXIII is giving me craploads of fun atm, while I think it has a terrific story so far. If Squaresoft/Enix dropped the ball with anything, it was FFX-2, that game just makes me ":/"

I also agree that these online FF titles should be branded so, FF is known for single player storys, so if there going to do something quite different then they shouldn't alienate their biggest fanbase by considering these online versions a canon to the numerical series.

I am going to give this a chance. I hope its not elite like FFXI ended up, I just want a fun immersive FF game that is not completely linear. I could care less about a story if XIII is the standard, give me a world to explore with my friends and other players.

Looks promising.

I have only ever finished 2 of the numbered FF games that I own but I do like to buy them and give them a shot, so no I don't obsessively complete them to brag that I have done so...it's not like it would make me almighty in the eyes of other gamers.

Anyway I was merely asking the question, I mean it steers away from the core series in a totally different area as did FFXI. I bet FFXI didn't sell as well in this country as any of the others in the numbered series.

Final Fantasy numbering is just a sequential indicator for each release. It does not necessarily hold any other meaningful connection or significance between each of the release. Those common recurring themes and design elements are bind to the "Final Fantasy" title, not the numbering.

Of course FFXI did not do well in Australia. This game is released in 2002, and at that time, broadband cost an arm and a leg to own for MMO. Download limits goes by MB instead of GB and cheap unlimited plans are unheard of. When the broadband market got better, FFXI has already matured and it's not easy to join in an MMORPG late as a single new player, esp those who are new to MMORPG.

I am not an avid MMORPGer, nor am I a subscriber. However, I do respect the game. It has close to 8 yrs running history and it's a (first IIRC) multi-platform MMO with PS2, Phat-PS3, PC and 360. That is an impressive record for an MMORPG.

I believe the development for FFXIV is to take the step up to the current gen console for better growth because unlike most MMORPG which are mostly PC based, FFXI growth is hindered by consoles. Like how it cannot be on Wii and Xbox.

The problem, as it is seen with my eyes, is that a lot MMOs want to charge you full-price for the box ($100 or so.. or even $50 is too much) and then ask for a hefty subscription fee every month after. And then when they release expansions that they claim not to be essential but obviously are if you want to be on the same playing field in terms of content and level; they want you to pay for them again at an overpriced point.

I do play one MMO, that is EVE-Online, but they don't do any of that nonsense.. they charge you a measly 5 bucks for the account setup and the rest is the cheaper-than-other-MMO monthly fee. I hope that DUST 514 will follow along these lines as well and that SOE don't double-dip too much with the box price..

@JmiYeo - I know that's why I used Aus specifically as an example. No thought was really put into it for this country back then. But also there are plenty of other FF spin off games without numbers, I was simply saying it probably could have been FF:MMO 2 because essentially it's a totally diff game to the numbered ones.

Many things in life "could have been" but cannot be because of what has been established due to various factors. "FFXI" and "FFXIV" is one such example.

Square had started their Final Fantasy numbering and naming conventions for almost 2 decades, they cannot simply just change it, esp. when there are already so many titles already out. Furthermore, Square and Final Fantasy are Japanese, who's culture can still be rigid to change.

They could have simply put a similar amount of time and effort into the online games as they put into the single player games and felt that numbering them would show people that they consider the game on the same level. Or it was a money grab, we don't know.

When FFXI first came out, the MMO market was still pretty small. People were still at the stage where they refused to pay a monthly fee. We are now in a post WoW world where millions upon millions are fine with paying a monthly fee. I know when XI came out I refused to pay the extra but since then I have played WoW, WAR, Aion, Champions Online, LotrO, and FFXI. If Square can remove the grind and the massive group focus I feel that it will do much better this time round.

Regardless of roman numerals, still game is shaping up very nicely and may be the next MMO I dive into (including GW2 if that ends up being good).

I heard it on an FF12 Montage. I know it was officially made by SE, whether it was a trailer or the actual opening before reaching the New/Load game menu, escapes me.
