So after hearing confirmation that Jazz & Shockwave DLC unlocks are coming to pre-orders of Transformers: War for Cybertron next month, I (reluctantly) wandered down to EB on yesterday's lunch break to place my order. Of course, not being a fan of shopping with them I wanted to confirm the situation beforehand and I approached the girl at the counter...
Me: "Hey, just wanted to confirm the extra DLC characters you guys are doing for pre-orders of War for Cybertron.
Girl: "Uhh, I think so, lemme check..." *doodles on computer*
At this point, the 25+yr old store manager wander past the conversation at the counter, doing some set-up for the current sale.
Girl: "Yep, I've got it listed here, two extra characters."
Store Manager: "Yeah, Soundwave".
Excuse me, but... HOW THE HELL CAN YOU BE A 20+YR OLD GUY, WHO RUNS A VIDEO GAME STORE, AND NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BIG PURPLE ROBOT AND AN ICONIC CHARACTER THAT TURNS INTO A F'KN TAPEDECK?!
GYAAAAAH!

Even someone who was never a fan of Transformers should be aware of who and what Soundwave is; he's quite possibly one of the most iconic cartoon characters of our generation.
Think of it like knowing who George Jetson is (who may not have been quite as iconic as Fred Flinstone), even if you were never a Jetsons fan. It's common pop. culture knowledge and I'd like to think a guy who runs a video game franchise wouldn't be so far removed from this sect of the medium.

I don't know who Soundwave is, I've never seen the cartoon or either of the movies. Now go have a cry about it or stop judging people based on stupid sh!t. _________________

The difference with you is if I was going to buy the bloody thing off of you, I would expect you to know what you're talking about. The context here isn't expecting every individual on the planet to know something that I might be passionate about and they probably aren't. That, I can pass.
That said, EB staff, like JB staff (at least here in Perth), aren't exactly well known for their product knowledge. Maybe I expect too much of them, but I've done the sales racket myself and pride myself on knowing the product.

I haven't watched Transformers for years (not since the early-mid 90
s). Amongst my friends who are average joes towards Transformers, I would say Optimus Prime or Megatron are more iconic.
I remember him, but I used to watch the cartoon. Besides fans, I'ld go out on a whim & say less likely than so people won't know who he is. _________________

Oh, I agree with Prime and Megatron, I mean Prime has even resonated on a lot of the TIME magazine lists of infleuntial people (as credible as this may or may not be). Between them and Soundwave, Bumblebee thanks to the recent movie franchise and possibly Starscream, anything else is going to be lost on people.
It's not as if I was questioning the guy on Outback, Defcon or even Jhiaxus. Jhiaxus, I mean, that guy doesn't even transform; he defied his own identity. It's like calling a toilet human.

Silly Battle.net keeps freezing up in matches in SC2, and all you can do is spam click and the animated marker stays in position. I painted out my frustrations with this opportunity. _________________

Fyuusii, shops tend to have people specialising in different areas. Just because he's managing, doesn't mean he knows everything about every single thing in the store. Hell, most managers seem to know less than the rest of the staff generally do.
So yes, you are asking too much. _________________

Honestly; if you worked in an EB store... Think of every single games/film and cartoon franchise that EB would stock and sell.
You can't honestly expect a salesperson to know the history and charaters of a few thousand video games/franchises.
As for the most iconic cartoon character of our generation? I am putting my vote out for William Murderface, Burnt Face Man or Robot Nixon.

Outside of the condescension, I can pay that.
One would think that he probably shouldn't have involved himself in the conversation though, if he didn't know what he was on about. I wasn't even dealing with him.

Have you considered that it might have been a simple mistake? Maybe you're being a little too harsh.
Shockwave
Soundwave
Looks pretty damn similar to me. I'd probably get them confused too if I hadn't seen the show for a while.
Seems like a huge overreaction over nothing, to be honest. _________________

This was my initial reaction. In fact, had it been the other way around I wouldn't have even paid it any notice because Shockwave isn't exactly iconic.

One could argue that for nearly every post in this entire thread, but that would be quite, quite harsh. What pisses one person off may not even blip on everyone else's radar; I believe(d) the intention was to vent here, not to garner some sort of mob rabble (though that is also nice).

I have no idea why this is so important to you Fyuusii. I used to watch Transformers as a kid and I don't recall anything about Soundwave, so I struggle to understand how it is iconic to a non-Transformers fan.

Okay, well let's change the topic while I sigh at being interrogated for something that pisses me off. Forgive me for staying on topic.
I'm currently stuck at work with absolutely zero customers, as a result of our poor publicity lately due to financial issues. Doesn't bother me, I just got another job, but I just had my holidays revoked because I gave my two weeks notice, even though I booked them a month ago. The holidays were meant to be for my exams...

Fun fact: Transformers is and always has been a terrible series, and the only thing ever associated with the series that were at least decent were some of the toys and Megan Fox (who is no longer associated with Transformers any more). Discuss.
Actually, to stay on topic, losing money pisses me off. I know I had another $20 in my wallet, but its gone. Must have fallen out. Really annoying when I'm trying everything I can to save money, to just have it thrown away. _________________

i read SHOCKwave as SOUNDwave when i first read the rant - it wasn't until i got to the point of the story that i realised i'd misread.
entirely probable that someone else had done the same. _________________
