(QCF = Quarter Circle Forward )
Beat-em-ups, gotta love them, but in these new-gen times, we don't really see many of these games any more. While Soul Calibur 2 will keep you occupied for a while, its always nice to see a new game com out with a new take on beating the other guy up.
Such as the first incarnation of Power Stone on the Dreamcast, not without its flaws, but the only game so far to keep me up playing ALL FRIGGIN' NIGHT. Truth be told, this genre is addictive, and their longevity comes from the fact that nearly all games in this genre have mountains of unlockable stuff (Soul Calibur anyone?) and you want to try and figure out your next <Insert large number here>-hit combo. Now if anyone wants to try and beat Hyperworm's 99 Hit combo on Bloody Roar (NGC) they're welcome to go ahead and try _________________

ahhh....soul calibur. Had me playing for hours. I've only played the NGC version that Big Pete lended me. According to others, it's much better then the PS2 version (apart from the fact that you can use Link). Is this true? _________________

I heard the PS2 version was the best, better controls, characters etc.
I only bought it for Link from memory and Link is one of the worst characters to use imo.
Personally my favourite fighters are the Marvel/Capcom series, just so fun and hyper, also Killer Instinct is very good as well, very underated imo. _________________

I bought Marvel vs Capcom 2 some time ago, I've unlocked all but two of the 64 characters...
I actually prefer the 2Dness of Guilty Gear X2 to Soul Calibur, but thats because there is more QCFing ^^ (QCB+X > FDDF+O >RC> HCBF+O for the win ) _________________

i've been a fan of beat em ups longer than any other genre... i'm sure everyone knows my love of the Mortal Kombat series so i won't say anymore about them...
i've only ever played Soul Caliber 2 in the arcades, and not there for a number of years now, though i loved the original SC heaps...
in previous generations i have also been a fan of BA Toshinden and Bushido Blade (though this is kind of different to the others)... as well as the Killer Instinct games... i didn't really get into Tekken apart from Tekken Tag and then Tekken 3 as these came with my PS2... _________________

I've always prefered 2D fighters over 3D ones for some reason...except if they're not as fast as I like them of course. _________________

I agree that powerstone was the most addictive beat em up ever created.
Other than that , I love the original Street fighter II and most other 2d fighting games are good for a laugh.
Except the Japs take beat em ups as life or death situations, they buy the game , pick a character , train until they have absolutely mastered that character , then move on to the next.
(so said , Japs are awesome at Beat em ups.) _________________

Hello, Tekken anyone? I spent hours, nay, days on that game, probably my favourite beat 'em up ever. Bloody Roar was pretty good too; gotta love that insane flippy throwing thing Jenny does. _________________

No you don't
...That 99-hit combo with Kohryu was so leet! Though we did have to reset the GameCube afterwards...
In general, I don't like the control schemes of fighting games much, though. A good fighting game to me would be one that gave you a wide variety of moves, but emphasised the speed at which you can react to your opponent and pull off the correct counter-move, not one in which you have to fight with the controls (QCB+X > FDDF+O >RC> HCBF+O ? No thanks ) to actually be able to win.
I'm sure that the controls are needlessly complicated in fighting games, to add more skill, but I'm not liking that approach.
Bloody Roar is quite good in this respect as it has some pretty swift characters and moves, and a wide enough variety of moves to do without resorting to stupidly long and complicated button presses. _________________

I just strung a few moves together while playing as Sol on GGX2 and those are the button presses for it, i've seen much, much worse anyway (Dizzy's Gamma Ray immediatly springs to mind)
And didn't we perform that little 99-Hit glitch with Uriko? As in she kept jumping into me and juggling me higher, and higher, and higher, and higher... _________________

It might have been, actually... it was one of the two, anyway
(The fact that you've seen much much worse only furthers my point, I don't see what your point is ) _________________

One day, those buttons will fight back, just you wait.
Seriously though, button bashers are annoying. There's nothing worse than having some noob press everything on the controller while you're trying to rack up a combo.. _________________

Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact on the Dreamcast using Saturn pads on an adapter is my favourite fighter ever. It's so, so, so deep, and despite missing Chun Li and Twelve, a slightly better game then 3rd Strike to me (graphics and balance are better)
As for my other favourite fighters:
3rd Strike, King of Fighters (95, 97, 98 and 01), Virtua Fighter 2, Street Fighter Zero 2, Capcom vs SNK 1 and 2, Sould Calibur 1, Tekken 3, Power Stone 1, Xmen vs Street Fighter, Fatal Fury Special, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Vampire Hunter, Vampire Saviour, Pocket Fighter, Samurai Shodown 2, Super Smash Bros Melee.
I like fighting games!

Not really a fan of the fighting genre to be honest but I do make exceptions for the Soul Calibur series. I also loved SSBM and I plan on getting into the DOA series. I think that'll do me, until Soul Calibur 3 anyway. *prays _________________

Budokai 3 made me remember why I loved DBZ, the ultimate moves are so awesome. Doesn't hold up that well as a beat 'em up, I just don't like the way the flight system is utilised and its annoying when you have to equip stuff in the dragon universe I keep forgetting so I wonder why I can't do Kaioken. Doesn't seem very well balanced from my initial play time at any rate.
I like most beat 'em ups, except I'm crap in the arcades, using one hand for six buttons just doesn't work. Don't get me started on my lack of skill with a joystick.
Fighters I like: Soul Calibur 2, DOA3, Tekken 3 (kind of burnt out on Tekken, but 3 was great as far as I remember), Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Street Fighter 2 Turbo X Revival (or whatever it is called on the GBA), Street Fighter Alpha 3 (my fav SF), Street Fighter 3: 3S (parrying in the arcade seems impossible, the game's cool on my DC though), Marvel vs Capcom 2 (so mad but good fun), SSB:M, Guilty Gear (haven't got X or X2 yet, Isuka sounds poor->meh), and the occasional King of Fighters game.
I just saw SNK vs Capcom: Chaos in the arcade today, gave it a go and got up to Ken, I can't believe he's like Evil Ryu, thats awesome, although I dare say he's too overpowered. I hate the game though, four buttons wtf? Everything about it just seems confusing, from the special bar, to the weird energy bar.

What annoys me about this particular genre, is a lot of the "storyline" in these fighters is ripped out from the NTSCj release, which is a pity. The Guilty Gear series has a great storyline, we just don't see very much of it >.<
The QCF used to be the bane of me when I used to play Street Fighter II on the SNES back when I was a young 'un. I could never get any of Ryu's moves off, or Ken's, or anyone elses that required a Quarter Circle in any direction. It wasn't until one of the 3D incarnations of the Street Fighter series when I finally got the hang of it and pulled off those specials I couldn't do before.
I'm a special move whore now _________________
