We had a topic about this earlier, but I Was just curious again.
If I want to take an External HDD full of Games, Movies, Mp3s, Most that are Legal ( Steam, Itunes, NetFlix, Youtube ) Ect
How should I go about it?
The way I see it , I've got 3 Options
( Firstly I'm backing this up and removing any contents that relate to me )
1) Mailing it and hoping fort he best
2) Carrying it in my suitcase in an external HDD case or Static Bag ( Friends seem to do it all the time and have no problems )
3) Carry it on hand luggage in an anti static bag/Case
I know Customs reserve the right to look at HDD's, but when you see how many laptops go through Airports, and we are talking at least 100 an hour, if not more, I highly doubt they'd want to search me merely for the fact that well, for the time it's going to take, I'd have to look awful suspicious lol.
Any stories of you guys taking HDD's overseas?
( Going to LA USA first, then Canada ) So 2 lots of customs _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xciuYTeu4Qc&feature=related

Have you done anything highly illegal, relating to fraud, insider trading, child porn, terrorism, or anything similar?
No?
Then don't worry. _________________

Carry on luggage. Since it's external don't bother with an antistatic bag, it's already encased in plastic. Less likely to get damaged and easier to present for inspection (upon request).
I've traveled throughout Europe, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia with no issue but I've heard the US is more likely to inspect it than anywhere else. Don't have anything illegal and the worst that should happen is you get pulled aside while they inspect it. _________________

I recently travelled from Aus - USA - Toronto - USA - Back home and carried a laptop and external HDD full of goodies i leached on the free wireless interwebs throughout the various hotels i stayed at. I never had any issues in customs, well i did, but none relating to the hard drive.
Cant see it being a huge problem. They are more interested in the physical value of the HDD as opposed to any contents, as they like to know the value of everything you bring into Canada! _________________ Kill each other nicely please.

Don't worry about it - customs (in any country) aren't going to care. Even slightly. At all. They're generally more concerned with stopping drugs/bombs/guns than downloaded movies.
I've taken external hard drives overseas a few times in carry on (once to Canada), and they've never even blinked.

When I went to the US late last year, they only requested to scan my laptop (full of leeched programs/shows etc ) without being in my backpack.
You'll be right, it will probably end up being the least of your worries when your lining up for 4 hours _________________

Most airports x-ray laptops seperately in order to see if anything is hidden in them (ie explosives) - they don't actually boot them and look at files.

Yeah. They X-ray them separately as the view of the laptop is complicated enough without layering them with whatever other junk is in the bag (cables, pens, etc). _________________

Yeah, like what grim and Brendan said, they just xray scan them individually for explosives and such. _________________

If you don't want it smashed/lost/wiped take it in carry-on. _________________

Yeah you don't need to worry about it. if your really worried you could just encrypt the content with a password and say that it's confidential _________________
