Couldn't they put the how-to-play content on the game itself? Or offer it as a free download from the Wii store if the Games Disc was completely full?

Either way I wish I had a Wii again, just for this.

Iwata did address the fact the disk cannot be played on a Wii, and stated that DVD players are common enough for everyone to have them, and it would allow people to switch between the disk and the game without having to turn the game off, or something along those lines.

It will be interesting for the Super Play videos at least...maybe...

The funny thing is though it isn't really a 'casual' approach at all. Who wants to swap between a DVD and the game. I can't imagine my mother watching a DVD and then switching game to the game to attempt a complex Mario action. If you are buying a 3D Mario game, chances are very high you know how to play the game.

When the game is released, I just know that there will be customers returning to the store of purchase, complaining that the DVD disk does not work in their Nintendo Wii console.

I wonder if this was really the cheaper option as opposed to opting for a dual-layered disc for Galaxy 2 and simply having the videos play off the game disc.

But shouldn't people already know how to play it? I mean Mario Galaxy 1 is ultra awesome as it is, every Wii owner should have it. But Instruction manuals should suffice.

Not only are Nintendo introducing 3D through 2D platforming at the start of the game, but they are also taking NSMBW ideas such as the check point flag.

@Cerebral, Theres an ingame "Super Guide" Star that shows you what to do. Haven't seen so im not sure if its identical to NSMBW, we'll find out soon.

People always complain about no save points but when Nintendo actually puts them in you all go mad. I think its the cartoon graphics thats the problem for many of you, that and your threatened masculinity.

I can understand where Nintendo is going with this. It caters to the casual market moreso. People don't like hard anymore, that's why we have GPS and google, this just compliments that.

Also keep in mind the large penetration of Laptops in the home means you can watch the DVD while you play the games.

I usually don't comment on things that annoy me - as i find that any comment i make just builds up the hype, and add page counts and so forth...

but I really really am disappointed that Nintendo are doing this, and in my opinion killing off hardcore gaming. It started in NSMB Wii where you could blow a bubble and save yourself. and now Galaxy 2 comes with a learn to play DVD? Where are the days where you looked up a magazine for tips? Where word of mouth would get you past the next level? Its not so much Nintendo's fault as it is with the general public's inability to have a decent attention span of more than 10 seconds.

That's the problem isn't it, no one wants anything complicated anymore, thanks I mean why even bother going to school past fifth grade. I hate how mainstream won't pick up a dualshock but they'll have a go at the wii remote... sure there's a market for both hardcore and casual games, but i don't see ANY indication that the casual market will ever venture over to more hardcore gamers stuff. Which is really sad because games like Persona, Demons Souls, Valkyria Chronicles won't be made and more mainstream fare like Halo and Call of Duty will repeatedly be dumbed down until we get an 'experience' rather than actually playing the game.

Yeah its politically correct to say everybody should be able to play, but if this means the end of hardcore games, no thanks... these high def games cost a lot of money to make, its going to come down to business decisions in the end and most likely more casual games.

Everybody getting a chance to enjoy the game does not equate to the end of 'hardcore gamers' at all. If anything, Nintendo should be given thumbs up for not breaking the basic formula while still offering support for new gamers, something other developers often fail at instead chosing to change the entire game's mechanics in favour of simplicity.

The super guide function, and this DVD, dont invade the gameplay space of the title. Its still just as difficult as it needs to be. In fact, Miyamoto has stated that the super guide encourages him to make games more difficult, as he knows there's now something for the sucky players to fall back on. The game still plays the same for the regulars like us.

Gaming shouldn't be some exclusive club blocked off to everybody who doesnt want to spend hours searching the internet for answers, or dont want to commit days to so a singular, tedious challange. I believe that if the game's core mechanics are changed for the worse to cater for the casual market (which does happen with a lot of developers) then its a bad thing, but if its a feature that sits alongside the game (like super play) then its the best of both worlds.

... these arguments keep coming up like the whole phenomenon is something new, but what did we actually expect from gaming becoming a mainstream market?

Like anything that becomes popular, quantity increases exponentially and without any real consideration to what once was considered 'quality' when it was a smaller affair.

Instead of grabbing damned near every games that comes along and playing the bejesus out of it, we're flooded with choices now and can't possibly keep up with them all. We want to play our games and enjoy them too, but we have to make choices about which ones we'll throw our limited money and time at. This leads us to expect lofty heights of some undefined 'quality' from our games, but we don't always make the right choices.

I suppose what I'm getting at here is that Gaming can be much the same as it ever was, if that's what you want it to be. You can find yourself truly 'hardcore' titles if you want to spend the time and energy finding them. Hell, you can pick up SMG2 on day one if you want and simply never use the bonus features there to help lesser experienced players - after all, they're purely optional.

Ifn you want to mourn what gaming once was, then by all means do so, but don't act all surprised and angry that the scene is different now than it was and continues to enolve. The writing has been on the wall about that one for a long, long time - and if you thought that this niche of entertainment was someone unlike the rest and impervious to change, more fool you.

So yeah, I don't see the problem with what N are doing here. I think that it's an odd move putting these on a seperate DVD, but I imagine that's purely because there isn't enough room to have them on the one Wii disc.

If you don't want to use them, don't - for people like my sister, who was bought back into gaming by the Wii and very much loved being able to re-connect with the Mario series, these optional helpers will be fantastic. While I can blaze through much of the game without too much trouble, she needs a helping hand from a guide every now and then.

They should release a Limited Edition that comes with the Soundtrack on CD as well.... that also can't play on the Wii.
