Is anyone else finding the British election as fascinating as I am?
The short of it is: Gordon Brown's government has lost their majority. The Conservaties got a majority of the popular vote, but not enough to form a majority government. They're now arguing that more people voted for them and thus they should rule the country, but it seems 62% of the country disagree. Both the Labor and the Torys are now buttering up the Liberal Democrats.
Also of note: they had to turn voters away from some balloting stations due to overloads. They weren't expecting the turnout, so they ran out of voting forms at some places. Lines were three hours long at others.
Pretty close to being a Mickey Mouse government really.
BBC's live coverage can be found here. _________________

I have been finding the election intriguing though i don't know enough about british politics to know who i want to get over the line. I do like the idea of having a third serious political party in the mix. It sucks having the liberals, liberals 2.0 (labour) and the nationals who are the liberal partys b**** anyway. _________________

I find it fascinating merely because it's like watching a train, having just left the station decide that it didn't like tracks and tried to take the highway only to fail spectacularly and leave carnage in its wake. it's like every step of this election has been marred by "oh, oops!" or "my bad" or "lol I have da powaaa... oh wait..." I mean, voting stations in shipping containers? Shipping containers? What was that, an attempt to con illegal immigrants into voting and then lock it and ship them off somewhere?
And conversely, castles. I'm surprised voters didn't walk in on Jeeves and Gertrude with the bench in the kitchen or suitably get lost inside a damned castle.
More than likely they'll have about half a year to fix their shit before they vote again in any event. Hilarity for mine were the Liberals in the media being all indignant "It's time that the conservatives prove that they can rule!" knowing full well that hung parliaments have a shocking track record.

There was rumblings that Gordon Brown might step down to sweeten the deal for the Lib Dems. And that's exactly what's happened. No matter what happens, the UK is going to have a new Prime Minister. _________________

Did Gordon Brown even have a chance of staying PM in the first place? He has seemed immensely unpopular ever since Tony Blair stepped down. _________________

I find myself a bit apathetic towards the whole thing.
Don't get me wrong, I voted and it is an important event but the process itself is half broken. _________________

Damn, you could've warned us that the article contained an image of Brown's "oh face". I'm gonna have nightmares for the rest of the week.

Now this will be interesting. I've been saying for quite a while that I must be the only person in Australia that wants to see Rudd as PM with Costello as Treasurer. Now, over in the UK, we've got Tory PM Cameron with his Lib Dem Deputy Clegg. I'm definitely about to take a closer interest in UK politics to see how this all pans out. _________________

Great. I hope for the Lib-Dem's sake that the conservatives hold good on their promise for electoral reform, which I'm assuming they made in order to get Clegg on their side. I'm pessimistic about that though - as the new system would crush the conservatives at the next election.
To be honest, I'm really tired of seeing conservative policies, regardless of the party they come from; the nanny state is really getting me down... _________________

I think you might have missed what he was saying there, Mike. Abbott is integral to the vision Goober mentions.
You want to see Rudd as PM? He is PM. You're seeing it. That's not a vision; that's a reality. _________________

^^I don't want Abbott as PM, but I am not overly impressed with Rudd's performance....let us start a new thread for the 2010 election in Australia. _________________

No. See, my point is, rather than one party in complete control you force them to work together. If Rudd constantly had to fight with Costello (who was arguably a fine treasurer despite your political slant) to get anything done there's no way we'd have Howard v2 running the country like we have now.
But hey, there's another thread for this discussion now. The point is, I'll get a chance to see what such a setup might be like by keeping an eye on the UK. _________________

The rest of the world's definitely more interested than we are here. Been on The Daily Show and everything. I couldn't care less; Brown, Cameron, Clegg... they're all the same really. _________________
