Wow. Mirror's Edge looks amazing. Such a simple control scheme. I wonder if they have it planned for DSi ... hmm ...

As for the pad itself, there's plenty of reasons why I'd consider getting one, and plenty of reasons why I wouldn't. It isn't fully featured like my macbook, but to be fair to it, it's targeting a certain audience that doesn't need all the features of a standard laptop. So I can see why some people will ignore it while others will salivate over it.

Still, I think I might wait and see, gets some hands on time with it when it arrives in store locally, see what the price is like.

I'm not sure if I want one. I do and I don't. I probably won't get one, if anything I might just get a Macbook one day, but I want to use an iPad first before I decide.

I'll be buying one for my mum for her birthday.

Does anyone know if this will be compatible with the Ipod Hifi.

Like I know it wont fit in the dock spot, but does the Ipad dock have a audio output that I could run to the Ipod hifi and go from there?

Pass.
Doesn't do anything for me, it might have some cool features but it's more a novelty than anything in my eyes. Hardly anything worth going gaga over.

I'll grab one, I love the iPod touch, and I'm always using apps and games on it, but more resolution and a bigger screen would be nice for cetrain tasks.

The reasons I'm keen on one:

• As a backlit, colour screen eReader Sure, the Kindle is nice with it's amazing battery life, and e-ink screen, but I tend to like backlit screens for reading off, I don't get a headache, and it's handy when indoors as you don't need to sit under a light or have a torch to read it. I no longer use public transport to commute to work, and as such portability is not so essential, but I do read a lot of ebooks on my ipod touch, and a larger screen is welcome.

• Comics Yeah, I've recently come across several hundred electronic comics, and find reading them off a fixed monitor to be uncomfortable in the same way reading ebooks on a monitor is. Being able to take these comics, on a portable device where you are able to lay down with and pull closer to see detail is a lot more comfortable.

• Interface As a tech-junkie, I love control and interface innovation, and until now, high resolution multi-touch interfaces have been pretty far and few between. Now with a product such as the iPad, it will become more common and better supported. This will benefit all forms of computing in time, and I'm excited by the prospect of gesture based interfaces. Traditional computing does not allow for multi-tasking on an input level, as it's based around a single cursor, for text or for mouse control. Multi-touch effectively means you are able to do multiple things simultaneously with different digits, instead of click A, then click B, then C, you can click all three at the same time.
The GUIs in apps on the iPhone have also been interesting to follow, as input methods are not so traditional, the GUI is also evolving to suit, with Higher resolution and more size, I'm intruigued by what we'll start to see in terms of iPad interfaces.

• More portable than a 17" Laptop I love my laptop, but taking it on holiday along with my DSLR + Lenses in carry on can be quite a process, not to mention heavier than the carry on limits allow, not that that has been a problem for me yet. For basic web browsing, chat, reading RSS (NetNewsWire iPad screens in OP article ftw!), I'm happy with something similar in size to a DVD case as it'd be faster to do things with a higher resolution than the iPod touch, more memory, and a faster processor, and more portable than taking my laptop with me.

• Games Again, thanks to faster components, and higher resolution, more screen space, and the same input devices as the iPod Touch/iPhone, and a massive development community as backing, I'm excited by the prospect of gaming opportunity on this platform. Obviously, the iPhone wasn't bad for it, but with touch as the primary input tool, and a small screen, action games were not hugely practical, as big thumbs and fingers would soon block your view. The percentage of the screen now blocked by said digits is now a lot lower, and more power means better visuals.

It's obviously not going to be for everyone, and there's always going to be crowds of people who love it and want everyone else to, or hate it and want everyone else to, but it sounds interesting enough to me to warrant a purchase, given my happiness with the iPod touch and it's development community.

I think it is too early to get one of the 1st generation ones. I'll wait for the next version to come out when they add all the features it "should" of have in the first place like USB or webcam.

It reminds me of how rubbish the 1st Iphone was. It wan even capable of receiving MMS. Lucky, that didnt come to Aus but yeah. I'll wait. It is too expensive and lacking features. Apps are more or less useless...

^ a big what if re: these features it ought to have. The iphone 3 gens down the line still doesn't have usb. Well, they have usb but will only interface with a pc/mac. I doubt they'd ever put a usb slot on it. Goes against their design philosophy. I mean, why even use something like displayport for their LCD monitors? I would have bought a 30" Mac pro and used that and shared my pc with it except my graphics card doesn't have displayport as an output option. So I didn't.

^ I disagree that apps are useless.

+

I never use MMS. its not free for me ($0.50 each) and you can do the same via "email images".

considering maybe 4-5 years ago, you'd buy a portable media player (cowon/iriver) and it can't do much more for $800 (also much smaller screen). Ipad has got so much more going for it. I see myself using mine a lot. Surfing websites (no flash LOL) on the couch while in the living room). etc etc. I read SMH.com.au etc newsites a bit on the go on the iphone. Having it on a device like ipad is great for me. Beats pulling out my laptop.

I also carry a leather briefcase to work and its got a side pocket this will fit in perfectly so its a great fit all up.

I like the idea of this if it was more open. Hopefully apple evolve this more into a laptop instead of a big iTouch.

Although I have moved primary to using my iPhone has a media device for videos/music/gaming. So if I could do a few things on it I use my PC for, it would be good.

But right now it's a no-buy for me.

EDIT - That video is hilarious. What do they expect?!? Would you throw around a laptop or gaming handheld.

I was watching this news feature on "iPad Copies from China"

They get it pretty harsh though, the Chinese 'copies' were around before the iPad, they're cheaper are look pretty decent.

I was also watching this very convincing feature on the iPad, with some guy saying, it's like a big iPod Touch! They proceeded to the break, lol

Looks like a digital menu.

I'm sure it'll be fun and if I had a spare few hundred with nothing else to buy it'd be a temptation - but in its current form, with my current position I'll pass.

I have an iphone which is wonderful because it combines my phone and ipod in one, but I don't see the need of the above. If I was an internet junkie on the tram and totally hated using the iphone screen size and didn't want to use a laptop - then yes it'd be perfect.

Nah, that was extreme, but his comment that a couple of drops onto carpeted floor resulted in graphical glitches doesn't sound too good.

They reckon it sold 300,000 in one day in the US. Still nothing on an AUS release date or price, from what I can find, but I'll be keeping a close eye on the news feed at work.

Estimated price will be $549-599 for the base and $999-1199 for the one with the lot. Release date is most likely 21st of April.

I think $600 for the lot is a better price and what I would expect to pay. $1200 for a big iPhone is a bit of a rip.

I was expecting the graphical capabilities to be a hell of a lot better than that to be honest.

No interest in this at all, used a touch in the past and I find it feels like pants, and I hate not being able to use a stylus (well, I hate not having the CHOICE between the two, on my phone I alternate between stylus and finger depending on the task and how fast I need to be). This just looks like a glorified iPod Touch that fails at functions it should be intrinsic with, i.e. tablet use.

Agreed. If it had the ability to accept stylus input, it would be pretty swell to take to uni as a note taking device. Having a conventional laptop at uni is all good and well, but sometimes to type and make notes/annotations and doing so with a normal kb/trackpad just doesnt work as well icon_sad.gif

$600 for the base model? Pass. It's just a bigger, more powerful iPod which for some reason only runs one app at at a time. You can buy a PS3 for a lot less.
