I'd say neither you or THEMAN bothered to consider the non piracy related implications of this development. What about as Burnz cited, the people who use the ps3s for research purposes through the linux facility? Instead of buying expensive computers, simple ps3's networked together provide a much cheaper and arguably more powerful solution. What about the other people who use linux as perhaps a media viewer via VLC or they use it for computing purposes such as playing emulators like MAME. Yes. Geohots work could lead to piracy, but at the end of the day if sony lock it down, its not like they couldnt find a way to modchip it. Arguably an easier solution anyway than messing around in linux.

I'd support Geohot. He and the blackra1n team are the reason I have a happily jailbroken ipod touch and iphone. The iphone is such an elegant device, infinitely more useful than any other phone on the market could ever hope to be at the moment. I dont need a HD screen or a bajillion mega pixel camera. Too bad apple decided to lock it down like they did. Thankfully, with geohots work, people have been able to unlock the iphone and access the full potential of what its capable of.

So are you saying that we should be bound to what we are given? By limiting ourselves we merely hinder our own growth. I say good on geohot. He is a saviour from the tyrant that is the restrictions brought on by big companies icon_biggrin.gif

I'd say you haven't bothered to read my other posts in this thread.

Plus corporations using them in a linux cluster wouldn't really need to update the firmware on their PS3's anyway. It's not as if they need to use Cross Game Chat while decoding passwords is it?

Id imagine the home user who uses both linux and ps3 OS would need it however. Theres no real reason to completely nerf the option to have linux on there.

*edit* Hm. After looking over your post on the previous page, yes you are right. There has to be a way to disable geohots hack while keeping the option to have linux there. My apologies.

new PS3 aka slims can't do linux anyhow. You're talking about an antiquated piece of hardware model that's already dead.

so whoever wants to hook up PS3s as cheap research purposed machines.. well yeah. too late.

You're arguing about something thats already come and gone. And if those machines were linuxed and already setup, you can be sure noone is playing games on them.

No one cares about linux. This is stupid nerd rage over nothing.

I'm interested to see if PS3 Slim owners will be forced to download the firmware update. It'd be pretty damn funny (and annoying) if we had to update to disable a feature that's not even there...

Are you sure? The PS Blog only makes mention of the firmware disabling the 'install other OS' function. I reckon if the 3D patch was included in this update they'd mention it to soften the blow.

As THEMAN said, good on them for removing something that causes piracy.

If it was ONLY intended for video games, why would Sony add all those nifty features?? I myself use the PS3 A LOT for videos, movies etc etc

What sony should do is digital distribution of PS3 games. I game to be played straight through harddrive rather then BD,CD,DVD. Worse when lense blews up.

Blocking off Geohots hack is just common sense, really. Considering the disastrous effects of homebrewed PSPs and what it did to sales due to rampant piracy, it'd be stupid of Sony NOT to block it.

That being said, it is indeed a double edged sword. They are removing a feature that was pretty well renowned among hardcore PS3 users, which is a bit of a slap to the face.

I am all for homebrew; I think the potential and power of it has certainly proven itself worthy. It's just the problem is ultimately, a lot of users abuse that power and begin ****ing things for the rest of us. It's always hard to control chaos.

The machine still does everything that most machines can't do (unless you run a PC of the Gods like myself or A13x hurr), so it still retains a lot of its value; it's just the more enthusiast users are gonna be pissed.

Also concerning research/development: From what I know, most devs and such that use the PS3 for development can actually attain the licence for Dev Kits of the PS3 which should allow for full unlocking of everything and anything, so there's no problem with the firmware for them. Correct me if I'm wrong on this though.

Really? All I see people with jailbroken iphones do is download pirated applications for free. Is that what you meant by full potential?

Plenty of people use their iphones for far more than piracy. You've taken the obvious negative view there, mate and perhaps it the guy didn't appreciate it.

Anyway, this update is balls. D/C five times already icon_sad.gif

Jailbreaking enables:

-multi tasking
-more customization options (such as changing sms backgrounds and custom sms tones)
-a wider range of applications such as emulators, VIDEO recording on the older 3g models, youtube and other applications such as skype over 3g as opposed to being tied to wifi. STUFF YOU WOULDNT FIND VIA THE OFFICIAL APP STORE.
-enabling SSH

Thats just off the top of my head, but those are most of the advantages of jailbreaking.

As for the update, Im in no rush to update since I hardly play online anyway.

I already understood what people COULD do with an jailbroken iphone, my point was more about what most people WOULD do with it.
It's the same with the PS3 and linux, some people may use these exploits to make some cool apps or customisations, but a vast majority would only want to use them to pirate games. Anyone who thinks different is just being naive.
