Thats exactly why they're doing it.
Thats not how you handle piracy. Removing something that was a core feature and lure of so many people who bought PS3's early on is going to turn alot of those loyal customers away from Sony.
Seriously, they've removed alot of the most important features of this console since it came out.
"It only does everything"....minus this, this and now this. Maybe that too soon.

Best thing is no doubt it will be another 150mb-200mb download to remove a feature 
PS3 updates ftl!
they really should have added something as a sweetener as well to lessen the rage.

To all you people that are whinging about this. Do you actually use the PS3 for what's it intended for? You know, its a Video Game Console. You play GAMES on it.

In all honesty, no I wouldn't. I never use my PS3 for Video, Music and Photo's and while the Browser is handy from time to time, I just use the PC for all that stuff anyway.
I buy a console to play games, not cause its got this feature and that feature.
You guys do remember back when consoles where only used for gaming? No one cared about extra features, all you cared about was the games.
Sure the features now are nice add bonuses, but they are not needed. I seriously think sometimes that people are so hung up on what console has this feature or that feature and this console is better cause is has blah, blah, blah feature, that you forget its main purpose is to play video games.

The removal of something i don't use doesn't phase me too much, i do take issue that it's a mandatory download in order to continue to go on the psn.
Stingy with how much / what i use my monthly downloads on, if it's an update i can avoid downloading. When it's implemented, looks like i'll be back on the 360 until early next month when i can go balls out and download more freely

Great. Super. Awesome. Thats what you use your PS3 for. Don't get all uppity when people don't share your opinion, friendo. I'd say you're in the minority on this as the PS3 is marketed by SONY as a "do it all" wonder-machine and every single end user I personally know has the PS3 for more than a games machine. If you want to pigeon hole your experience in this generation of gaming, thats your choice. Most won't share it.
The PS3 started as something, became something else and slowly, but surely is continueing to wittle away core laucnh features that set it apart from the competition.

TBH I'm hoping its a joke, because although I don't use the feature, there are many, many others who do. Nearly all those PS3-Server-Clusters out there run via Linux, and if Sony drops support for it completely well that's a bit crap. On the otherhand, if it protects the console from piracy then I guess they should, considering what has happened to the PSP, with even first-party developers saying that it isn't worth it because of piracy, although that has died over the past year or so. In terms of downloading, every patch I pray that they include 1080i with 50Hz, because the moment they do, I will explode in joy and happiness.... and joy XD

I use my PS3 for everything except Linux. Photos, videos, music, I use it as my entertainment hub. Removing functionality is baaaaaaaaad.
P.S. Sony when will you make DIVX files show up by default without having to select 'Show all'?

And thats the thing isn't it. A few of us don't share the majority opinion at times and all hell break's lose. Shock horror, someone bought a Gaming Console to GAME on and isn't worried about certain features...Oh No
I stated my opinion, that I'm tired of people whinging all the time when certain features get taken away. It seem's you more concerned about the feature's than using it for games. I know some of the features are nice to have there, but its not really what the console was made for.
If you're more worried about features than the actual games themselves, why own a Gaming Console?

Who said I was more worried about it than the games? You're trying to divert the issue and cocnentrate on something that isn't what this is about and its quite transparent. You're not contributing anything to the discussion other than "It's a games machine! It can still play games!" Zoiks.
Yes, the PS3 is a games machine at heart. No, thats not the only thing its used for. Yes, people are mad about this shrinking down of its use. No, we shouldn't just be happy that it still plays games and quit "whinging" because it makes you sad.

If it was ONLY intended for video games, why would Sony add all those nifty features?? I myself use the PS3 A LOT for videos, movies etc etc
