Am I the only one who thinks Nintendo are just making too many versions of the DS too quickly? I just got upgraded my DS lite to a DSi, then not long after the DSi XL was announced, and before that is even released (here at least), yet another one has been announced.

The Lite, DSi, and XL are revisions and re-releases of the DS hardware.
This is not the same thing. _________________

@EatChildren, correct.
"“Nintendo 3DS”(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed “Nintendo DS series”"
Its the new/next DS.

I'm expecting they'll have them running parallel, similar to Sony with the PS2 and PS3.
That way they still get the casual market with the DS and a lot of the hardcore market will upgrade to the 3DS. _________________

Is it weird that I spotted that the 3DS is strikingly similar to 3GS (iPhone)?

I think we can guarantee it has a camera anyway; won't the 3D effect be most likely be what that Japanese DSiWare title uses, with the camera changing the perspective? _________________

No, purely coincidence though. By the time this thing rolls around (this time next year) we'll all be listening to the macwashed exchanging theories about the new iphone which will replace the iphone hd (which hasn't even been announced yet)

They can run that through a DSi though, so why would they need a new console?
I don't know anything about, well, anything, but couldn't you just put the equivalent of a pair of 3D glasses directly onto the screen? _________________

That's just head tracking, it's been around for yonks and isn't 3D, it's just head tracking. If used with a lenticular display though it would be.
The problem I am seeing is if it continues to be a touch screen device, then the touch would be completely inaccurate, as closing one eye would mean touching something in the background of the screen would be in a completely different area to where it would be if you were to close your other eye, so it will either be not touchscreen, or not really 3d.
Other thing I thought of, is maybe the screen will use a depthmap for each frame of motion, and different currents through each pixel will change the physical height of the pixel of the device, similar to some methods suggested to give tactile feedback on touchscreen devices, to make a keypad on a touchscreen phone actually distinguishable without looking at the screen. _________________

Fixed for accuracy, but goodluck if you think winning E3 involves repeating E3 2006, but with a different brand name.

If it's touch screen AND 3D, that would be a whole new level. Can't wait for E3 now.

@EatChildren:
Yeah, I understand that, but I just don't see why they are releasing a true successor to the DS when they haven't even released the latest version of the current system in a lot of places yet.
I can see a lot of people who were considering getting a DSi or DSi XL will now just hold out for this one. I'm sure many will still get the new versions of the current DS (whether they are simply less informed, need/want a new system, or for whatever other reasons), but with the current DS still so popular I have to wonder why.
Still, I'll probably get this anyway, as I love my current DS and those features sound quite good, particularly the rumour that it will be about as powerful as a gamecube.

that's... annoying...
pokemon generation V, given the timelines, would be set to land on the DS... you would think nintendo would want to push sales by delaying genV six months and making is a 3DS launch title, which would allow for a whole new engine right away...

Why? 3DS is out by March 2011. So, most likely, by the end of the year. And Pokemon Gen 5 is supposed to be here by the end of the year too.
Therefore, lets say, Pokemon Gen 5 = 3DS launch title. It makes sense. _________________

I've always held the opinion that 3D is totally bitchin'; it's the price and the ridiculous notion of tethering your face to your TV with some headache inducing goggles that turns me off. Goggleless 3d means I am so totally there. _________________

To keep momentum of the brand name, I guess. The DS still sells very, very well, but stuff like the DSi and XL are mostly to cater to extra audiances and to flood the market with 'upgrades' for people to buy.
As a platform, the DS is seeing a slight drop in sales and I assume some developer support. Even Nintendo have been really, really quiet on their own DS front.
The archecture is six years old now, I think. I guess they feel its time to release the next version, ride off the high the DS is still on, and again pave the way for new handheld technology. _________________

I'm really excited by this announcement. Could be an awesome step for Nintendo. As long as it plays DS games, I don't think anybody will mind. _________________ Shin J Leon.
