No.
Remember, a new Attorney-General for SA will need to be chosen. If Labor chooses someone that still has that view that R18+ ratings should not happen, we're right back to where we started.
But we'd be pretty unlucky to do that... >_> _________________

No, I don't totally understand how it works but the gist was that any of the attorney generals from any of the state governments had the power to veto legislation to do with classification and censorship, etc so he could block any legislation that was put forth to get an R18+ rating for games.
If someone can explain it better please correct me.

^ He will no longer be the Attorney-General, so will no longer have the power to veto the R18+ rating.

Atkinson says he is stepping down - good news. Will his replacement have the same view about the R18+ PC and Video games classification? - we don't know.
GAME'S managing director, Robert Lukic, sent Atkinson a sample of the petitions that have been voluntarily signed requesting an R18+ classification for video games. Robert Lukic also said, "GAME will continue collecting petitions in store until April 15 and asked for your support (Atkinson) to help parents in understanding which games are suitable for over 18s and which games aren't."
GAME also sent the sample of SA petitions to the Shadow Attorney-General. Check out www.everyoneplays.org.au for updates.
In the end, we need to keep the pressure on because we need to convince every single State Attorney-General. And, we will. We will be putting pressure on each and every State Attorney-General before the next SCAG meeting, which is on 29-30 April, 2010.
How can you help?
Please encourage your friends and family to sign the petition at your nearest GAME store. http://www.game.com.au/findastore
As previously mentioned, the more signatures the louder our voice, the greater influence we'll have.
Does this post help? Please let me know...

If you're thinking that the R18 rating is now a sure thing, think again. If anything, we have even more incentive to push this campaign forward. Now that our major obstacle has been removed, now is the time to get as many people as you know on to this campaign. There are still 3.5 weeks to go and while a lot of gamers have signed up, now's the time to get your family and friends involved.

If you don't like people voicing their opinions on politics, why don't you get out and find a place that doesn't do that? |
LoL!
" I hate how this country is run. no matter what i do democratically, its going to suck, But i do want to stay "
Voicing opinions? its people just bitching |
God you're thick. If nobody complains, nothing will change, and as pretty much everyone else has pointed out, telling people to leave is not a satisfactory answer. The democratic system is broken, yes, but that doesn't mean it can't be fixed, although it will take a few generations for the ideology of the next generation to take hold in the halls of power.
Also, if you're going to try to make a cogent argument, starting it with 'LoL!' is not the right way. _________________

Ah this is indeed welcoming news! Although to be honest I was never too fussed about some games not being allowed into the country, as they were games I probably would've gotten anyway, except L4D2, when I bought it in pure excitement to find that the steam version was censored as well and there is no easy fix... this man owes me $50 something!!!!11
As long as we never went backwards I was happy... then the whole white box over R18+ boxes crossed the line.
Is it just me or when I see someone with alot of plusses or alot of negatives I can't just help but to add on a plus or neg, the whole archergrave thing made me laugh. _________________ xfire = andylulz

I think more importantly they need to change the retarded rule about unanimous attorney general voting that got us here in the first place...
I only joined this site in the first place so i could talk about squirrels and the politics surrounding the fall of the USSR..... _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

WOW!
Even though Atkinson didn't quit politics altogether, he did step down as attorney general which is close enough..
you should make another prophetic puntacular thread about an r18+ ratings for games being passed aubz.. and if that comes true straight after, we may as well go for the hat-trick and start a thread of me winning the lottery....

Didn't know where to post this, but this seems like the right place.
Home Affairs Minister suggests motion control needs reclassification
| Quote: | We only just said goodbye to one outspoken anti-video games politician, and we may already have another one. But unlike Michael Atkinson, who famously suggested gamers could switch over to "games like the Wii", Home Affairs minister Brendan O'Conner suggests the Wii, and other motion-control bandwagon jumpers, are the real threat to society.
Speaking at a conference in Sydney, the minister cited motion control as an important factor in the need for the video games classifications system to be overhauled.
"Computer game manufacturers encourage users to put down their control pads and participate physically in a game through motion-sensing technology... These interactive features are set to increase the impact of the material being enjoyed by consumers.
"We need to consider how increased interactivity will impact on children and what this means for content regulation."
If you're confused as to how the shift from control pad to motion control affects the age-level appropriateness of content, fellow speaker Craig Anderson, a professor at Iowa State University, clarified:
"To the extent that practising the actual motions of killing in different ways actually improves someone's skill, you sort of have to ask yourself: 'Do we want a generation of people who know how to kill people with knives and swords and guns?' ... do you want ten-year-olds to be able to do that?"
I'll leave you all to thrash out how exactly waving a Wii-mote around teaches children anything more than a plastic dart gun or wooden sword. I can't figure it out. |
