After reading some posts about game genres, specifically making yourself play games you know you wont like or suck at made me think about my own gaming preferences and skills.

Case in point being my inability to micro manage in strategy games. I decided to buy Civilization IV Complete and Galactic Civilization II Ultimate. They were pretty cheap (from UK), read many reviews about how awesome each said game was. I was especially interested in GalCiv II.

I read this awesome blog and I was impressed with the AI and how epic the game was. But I knew I hated RTS and sucked majorly at them. Lo and behold when I started playing, my brain couldn't handle thinking about little details in advance and planing strategies. Last time I buy an RTS. (No it won't Justin, no it won't.)

Know on to the point of the post. What games genres do you unashamedly love, which do you hate and which do you suck at no matter how much you try. They can also be a combination, such as how I love FPS but suck at them.

Also has anyone else felt themselves pushing themselves to like a game genre just because it's got great reviews even though it's not your cup of tea?

I too enjoy a good RTS game, but my puny mind cannot handle all the different units with their strengths and weaknesses against other units, not to mention the keyboard shortcuts and the skill needed to quickly switch between them.

I also like the fighting games such as tekken and street fighter but I am less than useless at them. I am unable to remember the buttons for each and every fighter. I remember buying Tekken 4 on PS2 and solely using Jin just so I could master atleast ONE character, but I still had my ass handed to me by the CPU set on easy.

I never liked racing games until Forza 3. Set all the options to hardest difficulty and go nuts, it doesnt matter if I crash because I have the "I Win Button", formerly known as the Back button.

RPG's would be my most loved genre, I don't even have much of a preference, it can be first person or third person, JRPG or WRPG. I just enjoy being sucked into the different worlds and stories the genre offer.

As for genres I really cannot play. It would have to be Racing, RTS and Fighting. It has nothing to do with disliking those genres, I just cannot play the games well at all. When it comes to Fighting games my head explodes with all the different combos you have to learn, Racing games I send most of the time off the track skidding around in circles and RTSs just confuse me to no end.

I'm a huge fan of most RPG games. Anything Bioware is golden, except for the Jade Empire. I lose track of time when a game like Mass Effect or Dragon Age comes out, absolutely love the character development in those games.

I suck at racing games but I really tried with Forza 3 and enjoyed it even though when I play online I come last every time.

As for games I hate, lately I can't seem to stand anything japanese anymore. The only exception being Valkyria Chronicles purely because of the gameplay (characters still suck absolute balls). I don't know if it's just lost in translation for me or what, but I'm over feminine male heroes with spikey hair and litte boy voices. They used to appeal to me as a kid, well Final Fantasy 7 did anyway.

Erm....I love 3rd person action hack/slash/shoot games the most. RPGs are good too, provided I like the storyline.

I hate racing and sports games, and suck at them too. But I'm not sure if I hate them because I suck at them, or I suck at them because I hate them and thus never play them enough to get good.

I don't think there is a genre i hate. My favourites are Rts and Fps. I love a nice deep Rpg. I Also like sports games. The only thing i don't like is games like the sims where you just simulate life. Whats the point?

I love FPS, and it's pretty much a territory where I just cannot seem to 'suck' at. Call it bragging but yeah, I'm extremely consistent in every FPS I have ever played.

I'd probably say sports games (FIFA, Madden etc) are the ones I hate most. They bore me to death and I'm usually pretty bad at them because I just have no interest or desire to try. They really do put me to sleep.

Oh a good thread for some of my gaming musings.. icon_razz.gif

I love anything that immerses me and I can actually lose myself and feel like I am there instead of just in sitting in front of a screen pressing buttons icon_lol.gif First person games are very good at this, as well as some RPGs, but I am very very picky with those. Actually I'm very picky with all games which will be obvious once I answer the next question icon_lol.gif. I also love games with great stories and interesting characters, games that try to do something new, and I love nice graphics too icon_wink.gif

I hate... a lot. icon_lol.gif I hate games that are generic and don't do anything even a little bit different. I dislike games that are too complicated, but also games that are too simple. I hate games that are only about the challenge and not the journey and the experience which is what I'm really playing for. I don't like games that are so macho that it completely alienates me and I can't find anything to relate to or enjoy (this alone is about 60% of all games that are released icon_lol.gif)... I hate games that are too realistic. I hate games that require too much strategy and planning. I hate turn-based games. I hate dark games that are just brownish-looking all the way through and don't have any interesting colour palette in the graphics. I dislike games that are too gory because it makes me cringe. I hate horror games, and I hate sports games. I hate multiplayer and only play singleplayer except for some very rare exceptions... I'll stop now... icon_eek.gif icon_redface.gif Yes I really don't like much and its a shame... But when I find a game I like I can be completely addicted icon_biggrin.gif

As for games I suck at... Well anything that requires a lot of strategy I seem to do really badly at. But I'm not really great at most games except I've gotten quite good at FPS games now. I don't play for challenge so it doesn't really interest me to get good at games.. Mostly when I start a game I will set the difficulty onto easy.

Fighting games. I don't have that sort of brain I guess. I suck at most puzzle games. My puny mind can not comprehend. Everything else I'm relatively good at. I don't even remember last time I came last in an online FPS and RTS's I can grasp even though I play I play them so little. I love playing Civ although it's just so long. Would love a shorter version but I still play on epic game mode with the most players as that's the most fun.

There's a lot of RPG's I've wanted to play but never found the time. It's not because I don't like the genre or can't get into it, but 'time' is the factor. Being a writing student who, up until a few days ago worked full time too, I can't really justify starting something if I can't finish it, so RPG's get the shaft until such time I can properly sit down and play them, giving them the attention they deserve.

RTS games. I find that I tend to just focus on the one set of units, watching them go to battle and totally neglecting doing anything else. I'm ok at FPS.. i have moments where I'm really good, then periods where I just suck. Love sports games, especially the NBA2K series.

Like - RPGs, especially tactical RPGs, but regular ones are fine. RTS and FPS games as well, with occasional nods to simulation games, but there aren't many good ones out at the moment.

Dislike - Sports games, mostly. "Modern" themed FPS games.

Suck at - Vertical shoot 'em ups. Love the genre, but abjectly suck at it.

I don't like sports games either, because whenever I do play 'em, someone comes up to me and says; "Why don't you just play that...OUTSIDE?"

...bastards.

My fave genre would have to be a toss-up between turn-based and real-time strategy (Fave franchises are Command and Conquer and Advance Wars), with FPSs and some RPGs bringing up the rear. I suck at FPSs, but I do enjoy playing them.

Personally, it really comes down to the game itself. Not the genre. A fine example is my hate for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series. Yet, I enjoy the Battlefield series.

The same goes for driving titles. I can't stand the Gran Turismo series, but I feel right at home playing a Forza Motorsport title.

I know it might sound strange, but there's always at least one game title that I enjoy and/or loath from each genre.

Im generally open to any game genre and I'll play whatever appeals to me.

Im playing through Dragon Age right now, while splitting time online with BC2, Fight Night 4 and FIFA.

About the only annoying thing I find in ANY game, is elongated cut scenes. If I want to watch a movie, I will. When im playing a game, I want to PLAY the game.

Within the genres I love, there are some games I really don't like so much anymore.

I absolutely love Rhythm games even I extremely suck at them. In particular, my favorite is definitely the Beatmania franchise. While I can see where every note is going, I simply can't react fast enough to keep up with the game. I also tend to mix up the positions of the black keys, so I often hit the wrong one. Because of all that, I struggle with even the normal difficulty stages and I can't even touch anything with a difficulty rating of 6 or higher. Despite all that, I love playing it because the music is great, as is the presentation. Probably the one rhythm game I can't stand now is Rock Band. I've played a bit when I'm hanging out with certain groups of friends, but lately I've grown tired of it because its all my friends do when they have a get together.

I also really love fighting games and a lot of the times I feel pressured by the mainstream crowd and by several of my friends to have to play Street Fighter. I played it competitively for years, but it started to grow stale and felt like I needed something that better suited me. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Street Fighter is bad, but I've pretty much adopted the attitude of "There's more than just Street Fighter out there", and moved on to other things.

For the games that I'm not too fond of anymore, a lot of it is due to me having to play games and pander to my friends whereas they never do the same to any of the games I present to them. It can really suck being in the niche sometimes.

As much as I love the series, I can't suggest SRW that much, bearing in mind a vast majority of the games are Japanese (Although story translations exist for a number of them), and if you don't like Japanese mecha anime, you won't get much out of it at all.

If you really enjoy the series that feature in SRW (Check wiki/tropes for details on this), or like the mecha genre in general (This applies to the Original Generation series), then it might have something for you.

Well I majorly suck at racing simulators.

I don't particularly hate any series but I'm not fond of the above mentioned genre, RTS, atm I'm rather sick of FPS's (always been a TPS fan), not that fond of sport games even though I have something like 5 or more.

I love sandbox games/TPS's, not as much anymore but I used to love RPG's.I love horror games also.Until Tekken 3 I didn't like fighters other than Killer Instinct, now I rather love them.

I'll play just about anything. The only exception seems to be Beat 'em Up Action games. If it's an action game that mostly (or entirely) involves close quarters combat, I'll likely find it boring. Assasin's Creed and the Devil May Cry series are good examples of games that everyone else seems to like, but I don't. I also dislike games that are so realistic they verge on boring, however I like Gran Turismo because I don't play it properly. I just make a car with as much power as I can, and get around corners by bashing rivals off the course. Yay immaturity!

I also really really like fast-paced FPS, but suck at them completely.

Love RPG's where I can explore a lot too, but strangely dislike the Elder Scrolls series. I can't work out what it is about Morrowind, but it just bores me.

I love playing Sim City, despite not getting very far - when i eventually hit a brick wall and can't increase the population - i goto town on the city and destroy it (essentially undoing my 'good' work).

To kill time i've also built an island full of nuclear power plants, SHIFT - FUNDS and after awhile earthquake's a plenty icon_lol.gif.

On the same token, i have not been able to get into Sim City 2000, 3, 4 etc. I always return to the original (and in my opinion the best).

Along the same lines - i loved The Sims, was addicted to it (just prior to Sims 2 coming out), collected all expansions etc. I basically played it to death, by the time Sims 2 came out.... i just wasn't interested. I still purchased it and played it a bit (but not much as my pc was too crap to run it properly). Even after upgrading it, i still didn't play it much.

I try to play all game types, obviously i have my preferences (fighting, driving, sport and fps!!!). I don't mind an rpg, or rts from time to time.... but i have to be invested in it. For example, i love some but not all Command & Conquer games. I loved Warcraft 1 & 2..... didn't get into 3 as much. And i stayed well away from World of Warcraft - i know it's different to the earlier games, but i still wasn't interested.

Shoot me but at one time i HATED the MGS series. I tried getting into them in their 'hey day', since i had no idea what i was doing... or where i was supposed to go, i gave up. I somewhat turned the corner when Snake Eater came out. I purchased it just after it's release, found it relatively easy to play (figured out where to go etc). After finishing it, i went straight to MGS and MGS 2 - and played through them. Of course i also purchased MGS 4 (got the game + console bundle when it came out).

Likewise, i tried getting into both AC and DMC, failed dismally. However i recently purchased (and love) Bayonetta.... which some say share lots of similarities with DMC.

Also on your Gran Turismo comment, i'm far from a car head.... but i love car games (both arcade and simulation). It's funny when you say bashing rivals off the course, i get annoyed when playing online. People try and say "no collisions", don't bump each other off the course. Sometimes IT CAN'T BE HELPED, i never do it on purpose.... but if we're both gunning for the same corner - someone is going to lose the battle to take it as clean as they can.
