I'm going to be trading it my white wii soon for a black one, my question is that can i still homebrew my wii, if in the worst case scenario the wii is loaded with the latest firmware update?

There is no guarantee that you will be able to put homebrew on it out of the box, however I'm almost positive that the ever prominent homebrew community will hack it. You can always count on the hackers, they are a persistent bunch.

I'm getting a black Wii this week as well.
I hope all goes well for us. *fingers crossed*

WiiMC, the latest step in Wii media playing, has released version 1.0!

You can get it here. Had a look and in terms of menu navigation and style it is by far the best on offer for the Wii. It looks really simple and clean, and flows smoothly.

The BIG downside is that there's a bug in 1.0 that prevents you from loading media from a NTFS partition on a USB, which means its useless for me until they fix it.

If you're loading off FAT or the SD you should be fine I think, but NTFS users like myself will have to wait for the fix.

Otherwise its definitely worth getting.

this isn't so much related to wii homebrew but the wii emulator running some games @ 720p...

I own Deadspace extraction and it looks like a horrible mess on my tv..

Now that.. screenshot from the emulator. Holycrap! LOOKS GOOD. I might have to investigate how to get it running on my pc.

There's an awesome app in the works called NCard. Essentially it will create an auto-updating gamer card similar to the PSN cards people have in their signatures. Check it;

Its still being fine tuned but it shouldnt be too long before its good to go. They're also thinking of adding online status updates, messaging, and Wii code mapping to future updates.

You can see their website here, and if you feel like it register a username/tag for when it hits.

INSTALLING HOMEBREW APPLICATIONS: STUBBED IOS 249 FIX FOR FIRMWARE 4.2

I dunno how you ever went with installing more homebrew but I thought I'd give a little warning to people.

Firmware 4.2 installs a block on IOS 249 which causes the Wii to crash if anything tries to run through it (like almost all homebrew installers).

I encountered this today on a friend's wii and it was a real pain. I eventually figured out how to get around it.

1) Use AnyTitleDeleterDB homebrew app to literally delete IOS 249. It will probably give you an error, but if IOS 249 disappears from the IOS list then it worked. http://wiibrew.org/wiki/AnyTitle_Deleter_DB

2) Use cIOS38r14_installer (this specific version, not the newest) to continue homebrew as normal using the network installation option. Once this is installed it will restore an older version of IOS 249 and you are ready to go as with any previous firmware. http://filetrip.net/f5958-cIOS--installer-38r14.html

TWO HOMEBREW APPLICATIONS ALL USERS SHOULD HAVE

1) Priiloader. Region free, remove the press A to boot crap, etc.

2) BootMii, installed as Boot2 (NOT AS AN IOS). This allows you to back up your wii, and even if you completely brick the thing, you can simply restore it at the press of a button. What is the cost? You have to push a single button extra to boot the system. A small price to pay.

I dislike apps that can brick your Wii so I'd advise against Priiloader in favour of a USB loader, or something like that. If you're backing up with BootMii it should be swell, but you know. Thats how I roll.

And for any and all Wii homebrew setup all you need to do is follow the GAF Homebrew Wiki. Its written to be understood and followed by anyone, and covers every firmware version, how to safe update, how to manage loaders, and everything else.

It should be the first stop for anybody trying to do anything homebrew and update related.

In my opinion, CompleteSoftmodGuide is a much better reference site. It's much cleaner and it lists guides on the most common apps/hacks used.

Also, how exactly does a USB loader prevent wii bricks when all it is just an app that reads isos off an external HDD/usb drive to load games?

For that very reason? icon_razz.gif. Priiloader needs to be installed on the system and can run the chance of a brick (not really an issue if you've got BootMii and follow the steps closely). A USB loader can be loaded directly from the HBC off your SD Card.

You do need to install the custom cIOS' to read the USB, but thats about as far as a brick can go.

Most USB reading software also does disk boots, so you can load your import disks via them. Alternatively you can use GeckoOS, which is an app you dont need any extra software for (other than the HBC) and that too will load disks from any region.

Just a small update, I was able to install and use the gecko region free loader and Homebrew Browser.. its the only two apps i use, so i don't know if that IOS and Bootmii stuff applies to me, so far everything has been good.

Some programs do work, it's just things that require IOS 249. I know that cIOS installer's newest version would try to edit it, error and fail, while anything that told me it was going to use 249 simply froze the wii completely.

I recommend a combination of priiloader and bootmii, but that's just me. Bootmii is definitely essential for anyone messing with the Wii.

I think USB Loader GX is the best thing ever. It's nice looking and so functional. Now my 360 and Wii both run off the hard disk, and when I play MHT online I'm always the first one to load the next area. icon_biggrin.gif

It might be kind of a dumb reason but the only reason I did get homebrew back after wiping it last year was to run my games off the hard drive. Quieter, faster, and less wear and tear all for the win. icon_smile.gif

Fair enough EatChildren icon_lol.gif

But then again, the only real way to brick you wii is to Uninstall System files(IOS's/System menus), install/run untested files and pulling the power while you're downloading/installing system file updates..

AnyTitle Deleter Give me an error and wont delete IOS 249.

:/

I'll keep trying various other things though.

EDIT: It works now, so its all good.

Well those peeps over at Team Twiizers have been hard at work with a Homebrew Channel update making it now safe to update to system menu 4.3 once done so, but I want to make sure things won't stuff up etc, anyone know yet if its safe to do the Nintendo update once you've got the new Hombrew Channel?

Cause I wanna access the shop channel, but don't want to try IOS61 & Dop-SHOP or WiiSCU, as they seem kinda complicated and unnecessary now with this Hombrew Channel update going live, that and I've never tried the IOS stuff before...

Thanks for the heads up Dare with the Homebrew Channel update.

I took the plunge and updated Homebrew Channel and then updated to 4.3E and......

It worked! HBC is still there and working like it ever did.

So it is safe to update as long as you have updated Homebrew Channel to 1.0.7

I'm having some dramas with some games via my usb loader. Heaps of stuff works but Mario Galaxy, Deadspace Extraction and a few others wont load up from the external hd. Any quick fixes recommended? I can provide the names of the applications I have but a mate installed it all so I'm quite uneducated when it comes to the tech stuff.

I think so, but I'm not entirely sure. Check the NeoGAF Wii Homebrew tutorial to see if you can softmod 4.3E.

Edit: Never mind, problem has changed. I bought a HDD and plan to use the USB GX loader instead of my Neogamma now.

Is that bootmii/priiloader really necessary though? Or can I just install the loader and get straight into it? Or is there a really high chance of the Wii bricking that requires a bootmii? I would like to avoid disc updates though.

Just 4.3, the latest, which has been hacked. If you intend to go 4.3 just make sure that your HBC is updated to the newest version first, otherwise it will be removed.
