Come on guys, where is all the Devil Summoner love here, after all the game is very different from the original games as the game has real time combat. But then again, I can't really talk as I only played around 2 hours of the first game (when I have time, I will finish it) and am meaning to get the 2nd game (but I don't want to pay an extra $35 dollars for a doll as well even if its a jack frost with the main characters hat).

As for this question

Can someone explain what Shin Megami Tensei titles all have in common and why there are so many different games?

I think the main thing they have in common is the recruiting and summoning demons during battle, that and they are all RPG's icon_wink.gif

While Andy explain the recurring themes, the reason why they have different games/spin off is because each of them have a main focus that make them different to each game. Persona has the social links, Devil Summoner has the real time combat, DDS has the party's demon transformation and with basically any other STM game has been known for a little twist in the series or being insanely difficult ( I remember this boss in Lucifier's Call which I swear to god, made me take a break from the game and I haven't gone back to kick his ass but like I said need more time).

Though anyone who is reading this forums and is interested in niche RPGs should also give some other RPGs series that aren't as popular such as Atelier Iris, Suikoden and the Shadow Hearts series; Of them I would try out the first Atelier Iris, either Suikoden 5 or Tierkreis as they aren't going for insane prices on ebay (They are still excellent games) and Shadow Hearts: Covenant (which is tied for my favourite ps2 RPG along with FFX).

Also good on Kyle for making a forum to give attention to this awesome series

EDIT: Forgot to mention the Wild Arms series, I can't believe I forgot this

Not a problem at all!

I don't have much to say about the Devil Summoner games, because I have heard that the first one isn't exactly the best game out there ... but that's not really why I've avoided it. I got disappointed when I heard that the sequel, the much more superior one, wasn't getting released in PAL territories. As a result, I sort of avoid it or don't pay any attention to it. But having said that, I would really like to hear anything about the first game that might make me change my mind about playing it. And I'd like to hear if it's true, that the second game is 100 times better.

So ... still playing Persona 4 here and having a blast. I don't know whether it's my immaturity or not, but some of the things the characters do or say have me laughing out loud. Does anyone recall the omelette competition? I love it when games do this for some odd reason. It doesn't add much to the overall story, but you really get a sense that these characters are bonding and are more than just some pixels on a screen. It's very well done.

I don't really like the first Raidou game, but then again I've only played the first case. Upsides? Its manual is pretty funny, and I think it's still easily obtainable for a sensible price.

The second one fixes pretty much all the things I didn't like about the first, though. Biggest improvement is the battle system, with Raidou being able to summon more than one demon at a time as well as gaining the ability to dodge-roll and not worry about ammunition. I've only played the first case in that game too, though, as one week after getting it I bought a PS3. I know I should try to finish my PS2 backlog, but I keep buying PS3 games.

I have a lot of love for all of the MegaTen games and their various spinoffs, though. I think I'm more excited for Strange Journey than any other March release.

Oh mang, so I just finished Nocturne (had to borrow friends copy and modded PS2. disc only and the DVD printing seems... poor quality so it's probably not a real copy, but I'll take what I can get).

It's a pretty overwhelming "Eeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh", personally.
As always, the demon/demon fusing aspect is fantastic, and there is some interesting philosophical ideas in it, but everything else really does seem like a by-product of the 90s.
Random battles: I have no issue with these, but apparently some folk (especially at IGN) are rabidly against this.
Grinding: A fair bit.
Vague Direction: Half the time I didn't even know where I was going or what I was doing. Also moments where you do know where to go until some side demon off in somewhere you don't normally pass by goes "Hey man! I hear there's something going on in ASAKURA. Have you been to ASAKURA lately? Because I hear there's something going on there. In ASAKURA I mean. Maybe you should go to ASAKURA". Thanks man. I know I'm lost, but maybe if you stood somewhere more obvious, you'd only need to mention it once. =|
Challenge: A little harder than most, sure, but there's also a fine line between challenge and cheapness.
For context, each 'turn' is split up into basically your turn and their turn. Each member gets an action (solo bosses get at least 2), and exploiting a weakness gives you an extra action, or doing a fail attack loses you actions in your turn. But some bosses have a move called Beast Eye or Dragon Eye. At the cost of one action, the moves net them an extra 2 or 4 actions (respectively, essentially giving them a free 1 or 3 actions).
So, Mot, the boss. Weak only to Electricity and Voids/Repels everything else. Sure, my fault for not having Zio-based spell at that point. I accept that.
But when Mot's turn consists of: Makakaja (Magic Up), Beast Eye, Makakaja, Beast Eye, Beast Eye, Makakaja, Megidoloan (Heavy Almighty Damage), Megidoloan, and wipes your party out, without you being able to do anything about it? Not happy, Jan.

Still, an interesting game.

Anywho. Woo, strange Journey in two and a half weeks.

Hmm, definitely sounds like a tough game. I'm sure that its good points would outweigh the bad, but I don't feel like I'm in as much of a rush to get that game as I was a short while ago. Your post kind of helped my decision, but I was already sort of thinking that what with all the recent releases and the future ones about to come out.

I hear that fusing has been changed a bit in Strange Journey, so it's not as frustrating to try and get certain moves onto certain demons. I think that's a great idea, because when you have to sit there cancelling a fusion for some time only for the chance to have a specific skillset, it can be quite frustrating.

RPGamer has a review up for anyone who's interested. Here's a couple of quotes.

Quote:
The setting and story are Strange Journey's greatest strengths. The plot opens as a straightforward sci-fi tale with references to demons and the end of the world as the only hints of spiritual influences. As the game moves on, the science-fiction aspects become less important and the focus shifts to a philosophy-driven religious plotline concerning a war between angels and demons, and whether or not there is still room for humanity in the picture. What's great about the setting is how consistent everything is. Conversations with enemies reference the sorry state of the human world, from environmentalism to war, and the dungeons within the space anomaly itself are warped reflections of society, always emphasizing mankind's lesser traits. In a way, the game world and everyone in it provide a single long sermon on sin and greed that can leave the player thinking about his lot in life — something not done this well in a JRPG since Nocturne.

Quote:
The battle system is the simplest and most traditional one SMT has used in a long time. Gone are press turns, knocking enemies down, and devouring foes. The human protagonist brings three demons into combat, and only he can use items or change the party's lineup during battle. Because of this, when things start going bad, they go bad fast, and if the lead dies the game is over. The high success rate of fleeing and the ability to create powerful party members help keep the difficulty reasonable, though. The only new mechanic brought to the table is demon co-op attacks. When a foe's weakness is hit, the attack will do slightly more damage, and then all party members with the same alignment as the attacker will slam the foe with an elementless attack that cannot miss. Co-op attack damage increases with the number of party members that take part in it. The mechanic fits with the setting since it encourages you to keep a party of demons with the same alignment. If the protagonist's alignment is neutral, the effect is maximized if the three demons brought into battle are also neutral. Although taking advantage of co-op attacks is not usually crucial in random encounters, it can be a godsend during the tough boss fights.

Quote:
Strange Journey's major fallacy is its length and how it wrecks the pacing. For the first half of the game, plot sequences occur often in dungeons and in the strike team's ship. The protagonist runs into companions while exploring, usually in a way that reminds the player of the urgent, scary situation the characters are trapped in. The constant spoon-feeding of the plot goes great with the setting, and the high story to exploration ratio keeps the game moving forward at a fast pace. Unfortunately, the tone of the game changes midway through, taking with it the brisk storytelling and the frantic mood. Dungeons become long, twisted mazes, the theme shifts abruptly from escaping a science-fiction quagmire to choosing a religious alignment, and the once-consistent gameplay is turned on its head. Strange Journey suddenly changes from a traditional JRPG that happens to have first-person dungeons to an all-out dungeon crawl complete with labyrinthine layouts so complex, a pen and paper might be needed to track which pits and warps lead where. This nearly ruins the excellent plot, as the final series of events is stretched thin over a couple dozen hours of gameplay.

Still, can't wait for this one as I'm sure it will be good even with its flaws.

If people are thinking of getting Nocturne I would definitely recommend Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 first. It is much more story driven (in line with FF but a lot darker) and traditional but using the SMT ruleset.
I finished Nocturne and while I liked it the story and characterization in DDS kept me engaged a lot more.

Devil Summoner I enjoy but the combat in both is a little weak.

I am looking forward to SJ but I'm not crazy about it yet because it seems very Etrian Odysseyish, with more story though. I need to pick up Devil Survivor again since my copy was stolen.

Yeah, that's what I'm sort of afraid of. While I've never actually played a first person dungeon crawler of any sort, the idea turns me off for some reason. But I was thinking that if the game had a good story and, of course, the demon fusing, then hopefully I would be able to adjust to it or even enjoy it.

In my quest for finding a first person dungeon crawler that sounded like a lot of fun, however, I managed to read up about Class of Heroes on the PSP, and it's apparently meant to be very easy to get into and a lot of fun to boot.

I guess that's just my initial worry about SJ, finding the dungeon crawling annoying. And I don't like the idea of having to draw a map just to know where to go. That sounds way too excessive for me.

In other news, it seems that a lot of people are very happy with the Lunar Remake, and the only real flaws people are giving it is the fact that the loading times are pretty bad, the battles are a little easy and that the battles are outdated. Having never played a Lunar game before, I am really looking forward to giving it a whirl.

I just got Grandia 1 and 2 recently, and I can see why people say Grandia is a great game. I laughed out loud in the first hour, just at things Justin, the main character said. It was a pity that I missed out on these games when they were first released, so I really hope that Lunar 2, whatever it's called ... (Eternal Blue?) gets its own remake for the PSP in the future.

Class of Heroes is probably my least favourite dungeon crawler from recent generations. Non existent story line with probably the worst balancing I have seen in a dungeon crawler to date. While dungeon crawlers aren't exactly known for their story line, this is a perfect example of how not to do a story.

You really want a dungeon crawler don't you?

For all I bitch about SMT Nocturne, it is a solid game and doesn't really have any critical faults. There are several things I don't like about it, but it is still reasonable as dungeon crawlers go.

My ranking of Dungeon Crawlers for consoles from last generation onwards:

1) Wizardy (PS2) - The only one to really get it "right".
2) SMT: Nocturne
and at a distant 3) One of the Etrian Odyssey games.

Hmm, I'm really not sure ... I think I just really want to try it out, you know? See whether my initial impression is right or wrong. I thought that Class of Heroes might be good for me because it seemed easy, fun and didn't take itself too seriously. I'm not sure whether Etrian Odyssey is my sort of thing, though, and now that SMT is coming out and it's a first person RPG, I feel like I need to give them a chance instead of being so close minded.

Class of Heroes is weird.
It's so... random, and not low-level friendly at all.
Your characters are assigned stat points based on die rolls (sort of), so you might have 6 extra stat points to spend, or you might spend hours and hours trying to get 20 extra stat points (site some people on GFAQs). And upon leveling, you can actually randomly lose stat points, so that's great.
Bosses have random HP. You might save before a boss, die at the hands of a 1000HP version, load up and face a 100 HP version you can smack around in a single turn.
Alchemy is interesting, creating your own weapons and all, apart from the fact that it's obscenely expensive and hard to get materials for. Sure, you can get an Alchemist, but they're almost worthless and waste a spot in your party.
Quests are pretty horrid too. I can't even fight the final boss because I haven't finished some weird letter quest that requires me to randomly pick up an item in a dungeon. That's alot of tiles I have to go around stepping on to find one measly quest item.
Some map designs are pretty mean, too. Traps, Anti-Magic, Darkness, Teleports, nothing too surprising, but there's a good solid line between a hearty challenge, and just being a dick and making some of these maps.

That said, according to my save data I've played 40 hours of it. Go figure.

Kyle Clarthy wrote:

You probably don't. Etrian Odyssey is unique that way (at least from the few dungeon crawlers I've played). Most others just auto-fills out a map for every tile you step on, and checking it is just a push of a button in most cases.

Hmm ... thanks for that, Bish.

I'm going to stick with Strange Journey and hope for the best, but Class of Heroes sounds less and less appealing to me now.

Edit:

So, I'm closing down to the end of Persona 4 and ... wow ... I love this game a lot.

Spoilers ahead:

Quote:
Adachi! I knew it ... I really did. Around half way through the game, before Mitsuo came into the picture, I was slightly suspicious of him. But then I withdrew my decision and thought it must have to be someone else. Morooka was too obvious and slightly deranged. I thought, "Hmm, maybe it's this new ho teacher or something, but then they would have sort of pulled another P3 by adding a character halfway through the game that ended up being the main bad guy.

Teddie. You just want to bear hug him.

I'm curious to see how it will all work out now, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to max a few of my social links any time soon ... they seem to be stuck on things like 8 and 9 and there's been a lot of dialogue and scenes for the past five days or so.

Come on, Persona 5! I'd be so happy if it was revealed. I'm just imagining the things they could do with it. While I like the artwork and graphics and pictures of the Persona games, I'm hoping they actually make more detailed characters and environments and scenes for the next game. Still, whatever they do, I'm sure they'll get it right.

Well, it is quite possibly for the best.
As an introduction, even though the first person thing might throw you off at first, hopefully the SMT universe you're so familiar with will probably make you endure it for longer if you ever get tired or frustrated of it.
Something different, yet so familiar.
There are certainly worse ways of entering a new genre, I suppose.

So close to the end of Persona 4 now and
Quote:
I mean the real end this time ... What a long game! I really do love it, but it's taken such a long time to get to this part of the story and really, who wouldn't want to get the "true" ending when you've already gone so far.

It's funny to think that something so little caused so much, and by that I mean the handshake at the beginning of the game with the gas attendant. And really, I never really questioned why my character awakened his Persona immediately without confronting his inner self.

I'm curious to see how it all ends.

I was a little frustrated I couldn't finish a couple of social links due to either running out of time or because of the circumstances, but that's only minor. Still, I think that they need to maybe fix this for the next game, but I may be the only one who thinks so. Not everyone is able to replay a game again, especially one so massive, just to get some more social links completed. I think they have to somehow change this, but how I wouldn't begin to know. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

It was such a great experience, and both Persona 3 and 4 are quality RPGs that should be on any good RPGers shelf.

I feel much the same way about Persona 4. I found it far more difficult then Persona 3 in regards to time management. Persona 3 was easy in the sense that you could clear Tartarus up to the blockade on the first day of the month thanks to the insta-heal you receive from the ground floor, leaving the rest of the month free to work on Social Links.

Persona 4 on the other hand had weather to take into account. Also the addition of two new personality traits made it far more difficult because Persona 4 had more Social Links requiring a certain level of courage or other stat. Most of the early game was me grinding these skills up just so I could talk to a person. And unless you have Hermit at a high level grinding in dungeons is painful, you need to leave to heal up, which wastes an entire day and night. I think I maxed out only 25% of Social Links by the end of the game, so I missed a huge amount of content.

I will probably play again using the carry over feature, I love Persona 4 enough to play all the way through multiple times icon_razz.gif

I wasn't too stressed with Social Links, I don't think?
I mostly put them on a rotation, figuring out that ones like the Fox you could do on rainy days. I don't think I finished the ones Saki's little brother (which was unfortunate), and the one with the cultural club (which I avoided because things got really awkward. "I'm a bit of a bitch, but clearly that's just passion for acting and OH GOD MY DEADBEAT DAD IS DYING". Um. Yeah. Fun times). I also managed to max out Nanako's Justice Link something like 2 days before you couldn't advance it anymore (ie, when she got taken), so that was a fluke.
But yeah, the timing was alot tighter and strict. I remember in P3 I had something like a month before the final battle, so I just kept playing Arcade games to boost my Persona's stats, getting something ridiculous like 99 in every stat, and still managing to have time left over.

Haha, Adachi. Just when I started the game, I had a friend (who had already played it) ask me about who I thought the killer was. I hadn't really thought about it, so I just made up a reasoning on the spot; For someone who wasn't directly involved with the player character, he was such a commonly recurring character, added to the fact that he was set up as a sort of doofus character, it'd be all the more shocking when it's revealed he's the killer. Nothing to support it at all, but hey, it worked out.
My friend had very much the same reasoning as you though.

As for the Main Character's Persona, I had always assumed that it was always because he was himself, and had nothing to hide. All of his teammates had issues dealing with the acceptance of their true feelings, but as a stereotypical silent main character, there's not much more to it than that, so BAM, Izanagi.
The potential flaw in that reasoning Adachi and... whats-his-face's versions of Izanagis. From my understanding, neither had prolonged time spent in the TV World (just throwing people in TVs), so it's a bit weird when you fight Adachi, considering that for someone who hasn't even fought Shadows, he has such control over his Izanagi. Although arguably, he had already come to terms with his bitter, negative nature before he discovered his power (he was complaining about being a skilled detective, but then being kicked over to Inaba, what he described as a "bum town" or something), so he wasn't hiding it from himself, just others. The weird thing is whats-his-face, (Namatame?). He doesn't realise it himself, but having some sort of messiah complex, shadows flock to his Persona, warping it into that... big headed angel... thing... boss guy. So I'm not really sure how that works.

I'm in two minds about Izanami giving random people powers though. It's interesting the application of the same power by 3 different people. But then I feel it sort of cheapens the impact your ability has if it's just like giving away candy. At least in P3, although it could have happened to anyone (just because you were on the bridge at that time), your power was still unique. Well, mostly unique. Aegis gets it, but it's not like she picks it up at random.

Izanagi's first form didn't last very long, and I was almost about to beat the second form when she just happened to use some status-inducing attack that drilled me for major damage, too, like all end bosses seem to have. Unfortunately, due to her getting to attack twice, she used another attack that hit everyone, killing only me and Yukiko.

Very frustrating when you just want to beat her, watch the ending and move on to another game ... eg. FF13! icon_wink.gif

EDIT: Okay, she beat me again at the same spot ... so, I assume I have to figure out how to prevent her from doing it or something? Does anyone have an idea of how to beat her?

I guess the reason I'm annoyed about the social links is that I'd really like to see more of them in one playthrough, because they're usually so interesting and the characters deal with problems that are very real to us. I would love to play this game again, but in the off-chance that I couldn't, then I would have liked to have seen some more of them. A good portion of the game deals with them and I really like to see how some issues are resolved.

Boss battle hints? wrote:
From memory, I think you need to Guard/Defend/whatever it's called.
The boss'll pop off a Stagnant Air the turn before as a warning that she'll cast some sort of status-inducing ailment, from which her next move will OHKO anyone with a status.
Pretty sure guard prevents getting a status, although maybe I'm just making that up. It's been a while.

Thanks, Bish! You're a legend. I'm kind of embarrassed that I didn't know to guard, though, but oh well ... you ended up being right, and the boss really didn't stand a chance after that. I admit I got a little worried at the end, though, but I was pretty relieved to see the boss writhe in agony and frustration.

I think this was one of those endings where I almost felt teary. Great ending, and I really enjoyed every moment I spent with the gang, so I could really relate to them all at the end there.

P4's ending seemed a little weird to me.
I understand what you're saying; considering P4 social links also included your teammates, it was certainly a more personal experience when you have to say good-bye.

But, just packing up and saying so long and thanks for all the fish? Having the Inaba Scooby Gang disband, with you going off back home, Rise going back to modelling and Naoto going off and doing... whatever it is she does? Also the fact that when you're on the train you have the super dramatic goodbye, even though you live a few hours away by train. Sure, not an easy commute for weekends, but certainly doable during holidays.
It all just seems weird when compared to P3's ending, which I thought was very appropriate.

In general, I thought P3's ending was better. P3 Boss was Nyx, the un-killable manifestation of Death itself. P4 Boss was... more or less just a super powerful Shadow formed by human thoughts and emotions. Able to be killed. Was actually killed. Nyx battle just seemed... more epic to me.

Also, this might be an interesting read if you have the time.

Also also, if you haven't read the hiimdaisy comics, remedy it now!

I hope this auto-merges my posts and bumps up the topic, 'cos I don't want to double post, but:
Persona 5

!!!

Also, has anyone ordered Strange Journey from anywhere that include the bonus soundtrack? They say that all first print copies come with it, and since it just came out, I'd assume that all current copies come with it, but I've yet to find a site actually confirming it.
I don't need the bonus soundtrack, but bonus Atlus goodies are always delicious.

Don't worry about double posts ... I think it's been long enough since your last one to not really count.

And yes! I just saw that news, too. Very exciting!

They're saying the PSP is probably the console of choice ... however, who knows until it's announced.

Will anyone be getting Persona 3 PSP when it's out?

I'm a little confused. A couple of people have got Strange Journey already and I ordered mine from Play Asia, too ... however, I chose the fastest postage ... so I don't know what's happening. As for your question, if you look in the purchase thread, there's a picture of the game in there and the soundtrack is advertised on the actual game case ... so, I'm assuming that it's a bonus already packed inside.

This was taken from 1up.com

Quote:
With new Shin Megami Tensei titles arriving at a clip of roughly two per year, a true sequel in the popular Persona series was inevitable. And sure enough, developer Katsura Hashino has confirmed that Atlus is now working on Persona 5.

"I want to add things that are being expected of the series," Hashino told Dengeki PlayStation (via Kotaku). "I also want to change things that can be changed within those boundaries."

Hashino has served as director and producer of Persona 3 and Persona 4 respectively. Shoji Meguro has been listed as Persona 5's producer.

No word on which console will be hosting Persona 5, but the PlayStation Portable seems like a reasonable bet. Persona 3 Portable will be launching on Sony's handheld later this summer.

Expect a formal announcement later this year.

I screamed like a little girl when I saw the words "Persona 5". I knew it was coming, but didn't expect it to be in the works so soon. Although, I suppose it makes sense given the small gap between P3 and P4.

Are you kidding? I'm grabbed a PSP off ebay just for this game. Perhaps a little excessive, but it is persona we're talking about. And if the PSP ends up being the console of choice for P5 then it definitely was money well spent icon_razz.gif

Good choice, I think!

There's quite a lot of RPGs on the PSP already, and more coming out for it, so I doubt you will have nothing to do while you wait for P5 info.

(I just noticed I posted about other RPGs in this topic ... doh! I must have gotten confused about what topic I was typing in!)
