I'm really liking the updated overlay UI

It's about time they updated, the old UI has remained pretty much unchanged for years. The new one looks snazzy. _________________ My Photos

There is a way to run Windows games on a Mac, it's called Cider. I was thinking last night that they should put Steam on the Mac, would be a heaps easier way to buy Mac games, and might encourage more devs to make Mac games.

You can, and I used to when I was living at Dani's Dad's place.
I'd copy the program files folder of a game into the contents of a copy of the SPORE Creature Creator demo, then edit the .plist file inside it to reflect the new folder structure and name. Once that's done, I'd attempt to run it, if the game worked, then yay.
If not, then you sometimes need to copy some drivers over from the windows system folder, but I could get a lot of the games to work.
Its due to the way EA releases games on the mac, they are a windows installation, complete with the same folder structure, but inside a container that emulates the way it is run on windows.
Info here:
http://www.transgaming.com/business/cider/
So essentially, if Steam had a mac store, and the publisher's okays, they could release cider-equivilent versions of anything on the store.
Quick overview of porting a game:
Duplicated Spore demo, replaced icon, renamed.
Copy installed folders from the Windows Program Files of said game into the .App, by right clicking it and showing package contents.
Do the same with recently installed windows drivers and game .dlls from system folders.
Open the info.plist file
Edit to reflect changes to executable location, save folder names and the like.
Enjoy playing your ported game _________________

Just downloaded the beta. I does look nice but some times the ui freezes for about 10 seconds and then goes back. But obviously these things will be ironed out. _________________

i hated the UI. it looks like a bunch of shit. gunmetal grey and 'modern'. really grates on my eyes. and with the sidebar removing images, and not having a real 'sort' option like with the previous version, its a little weird. and dont get me started on the iTunes grid view option and shit like that. the store looks pretty much the same, not a problem, if not, a little weirder having shit in a different location, but i can deal with that. apart from the store though, its like walking arms out into a rainstorm of piss. its not very untuitive, and various parts just seem to lock up the system, or just not work, and crash steam. if i wanted a small list of my games instead of the full view, i would select that in the options. i dont select that, because i like having a FUNCTIONAL favourite system, or seeing the little image next to every game. i like being able to sort by availability and shit. its just a clusterfuck of bad design choice, which seems to be going backwards instead of forward _________________

Looks nice to me. The web pages take aaaaages to load right now though.
The main feature here is dropping the IE rendering engine in favour of webkit, which does indeed open the door to a Mac OSX and Linux Steam client =) _________________

Except I can get a non Cider port to happily run in a VM or with Crossover there's a less of a performance hit involved in that than running it with Cider. Cider also changes Gamma settings which makes windowed mode for games useless. So no, I'd rather no port at all than just a money grab as what they do with Cider.

I grabbed the beta UI last night and quite like it. I wish they kept the simple +fav system as well as the newer more complicated tag/playlist one though.
As a heads up for anyone else trying it out: disable Steamwatch, Frey's or any other source blocking app you use. The new system seems to grab all sorts of content over the same ports that those apps block. If you're using them you'll see a lot of plain black and white pages and backgrounds instead of what's meant to be there. _________________

I love it!!! It's so much better than the old theme and I like how it gives pictures and information and news of the games when you click on them in your library and how it says how many hours you have played.
The hours played isn't accurate though, it says I've played 6 hours of a game I've not even started playing yet except for installing it and trying it for 5 minutes. and it says I've only played 3 minutes of an RPG that I finished from beginning to end!! _________________

There's a button that switches back to an old UI style list that allows you to tag favourites to put them at the top. I quite like the new design, I won't begrudge it's introduction as the standard UI in future Steam releases. _________________

I don't mind the Thumbnail view, the detail view likewise for extra info, but it looks a bit cluttered, so I've been sticking to list view.
Just so you all know, you can sort by status to keep the downloading or not installed games at the bottom of the list, and right clicking the title bar for the table lets you disable images or other columns of unnecessary information should you want to.
I like the new store layout also, with the green boxes to show a percentage discount, and hovering allowing you to view an info box on the game.
I let it redownload all 11Gb of MW2 MP, then it wouldn't run it due to a missing file, so I verified and it is missing 1.8Gb of data which it is now downloading, well, until I paused it.
Also found that when you buy games, you need to restart Steam for them to show in your library, though I'm sure this will be ironed out pretty soon. _________________

The same thing happened to me But I just deleted all the content and then reinstalled it from my disk! _________________

Webkit should make the webpages load heaps faster. The steam news loads heaps faster for me now.
Also using and loving this, list view seems a little cluttered but other than that its ok.
(it deleted heaps of my mw2, and deregisted mw2, audiosurf and killing floor. all fixed now though) _________________

I think my issue was related to SteamWatch blocking some connections. After disabling it everything seems much, much faster. _________________
