So make sure you've registered your old Starcraft/Warcraft/Diablo keys on http://battle.net/ and agreed to participate in any betas! I've been waiting a few months for this now. Good luck everyone =) _________________

I have a SCII beta icon next to the beta profile settings link which I don't think was there before, but no download option yet. Not sure if everyone got in and they're just taking time to add it to the accounts or if it's just a subset of people. _________________

They aren't having a Mac beta, at least not at the start, so I won't be getting in. I can wait though, don't really care much about the beta.

The games already been uploaded to, uh, certain websites. Not that I really see the point in downloading it, you'd miss out on the best part, multiplayer. But I suppose if you were that desperate to play it, maybe it has offline?

The reviews I've been reading haven't been very positive so far. Seems to be just a flashier late 90s game rather than matching any of the 05-10 RTSes for any kind of innovation. Pretty disappointing.

That's what I heard, that they aren't taking many risks with it, trying to make it more of an esport, same as the original Starcraft. Well, I never played that, so I don't really mind.

What were you really expecting? Blizzard has the best RTS games and I don't see why they would want to mess with a winning formula.
C&C is still choking on it's FMV ham-acting.
Supreme Commander is epic but oh so slow and long.
Age of Empires is no more.
Dawn of War II is more tactical than anything.
And I can't actually think of any more RTS games right now.
Nope, Starcraft is good and I'm looking forward to the next iteration =)
If you really want a key, apparently there's quite a few on eBay =P _________________

^Precisely. Don't fix what isn't broken. And as far as I see it, for the past decade StarCraft has had the most perfected level of balance in MP, ever. I used all 3 races and none of them were ever overpowered or underpowered.
I crave to get into this beta. _________________

I disagree with that entirely. Starcraft was just a generic Sci-Fi story with an outdated terrain system. They lauded that some of their new units didn't need ramps as an awesome feature. Wow, Total Annihilation which was released six months earlier than the original had mostly ramp-less terrain because it was actually 3D as opposed to just different levels of 2D connected by ramps. So 12(13?) and half years and they still lagging behind games released before their first game.
The only thing Starcraft has is that it's balanced enough for competitive play. Even then that's not really a positive since the majority of people you place against do everything exactly the same.

To argue the point, you say that Starcraft still had ramps to connect two levels of terrain instead of a full 3D landscape. Whilst that is true, you say that it wasn't innovative.
Now tell us how many other RTS titles you know that are as balanced across all playable forces? I think in it's own right, Starcraft has achieved that level of innovation.
I'd also want to justify the 'Don't fix what's broken' pointer. Look at Resident Evil 5 in comparison to RE4. Perfect game that tried something new, and a hell of a lot of people lashed at it (I still don't know why, I think it's great ) _________________ Playing: Fallout: New Vegas

It's fine if SC isn't entirely your thing Jellyfish but the game is not about being a technical showcase but it was never about that. As you say it is 2D sprite based and essentially played on a single plane when TA and Dark Reign were introducing full 3D units, terrain and gameplay. While TA and DR were impressive technologically, SC is all about well balanced strategy and units. There is a lot of variation in what you can do and there's a hell of a lot of skill and depth to what people call 'micro' and 'dancing' units.

You're right about the balance but I'm not sure who you've been playing against as I saw a lot of variation when I was actively playing online. _________________
