After having an enlightening discussion with my uncle last night on my new Nikon D3000, I have decided to buy a camera lens.

He recommended the Tamron A16 17-50mm f2.8 lens as a replacement for the standard lens that came with the D3000.

I know lots of people here are photography enthusiasts, so is this type of lens worth getting? Since my budget is pretty small (around $300au), I'm planning on getting it second hand in Hong Kong.

I don't really know anything about lenses, so I dont really know what the quality improvement will be. Do any of you peeps have any other recommendation, or is the A16 good enough? I'm starting to learn more about my new DSLR, and I was wondering what a set of decent lens can do.

I'm a bit of a novice myself, but it depends on what kinda stuff you want to shoot I think?

I got the Tamron 18-200mm for a few hundred dollars a while back. The zoom range is pretty good, but it could be a lot sharper.

I def. recommend a 50mm f/1.8 lens though, aperture is wide open, pretty cheap too. Great as a secondary lens.

Again, I'm a novice myself, wouldn't mind hearing what the pro's have to say.

Yeah, I saw the Tamron 18 - 200mm going quite cheap, except my uncle, who's a pretty good photographer, told me that those super zoom lenses aren't good quality, and they're not fixed aperture. So that's probably why the image isn't as sharp.

I'd recommend this:

I've been planning to buy this lens for a while. Being a prime lens, you get that very fast maximum aperture, which is good for low-light and situations where you want a decent amount of bokeh.

It's also reasonably cheap, I think you'll see them for around $400 new.

Come higly recommended on the Whirlpool forums and are very competitively priced.

Also, I have a d3000, isnt it awesome!?
I'm only new to photogprahy so I'm sticking to the stock 15-55mm for now until I feel the need (or want lol) for a new lens.
