Hi
Am looking for some advice re the ps2 eyetoy and games as they seem to be going fairly cheap on ebay
My questions are:
1. is it worth spending more for the new silver camera v.s the older black style and does the new one come with a wide angle lens or is it a further accessory
2. has anyone played kinetic or kinetic combat and can recommend or not recommend
3. which would be best to buy/has best games (especially for younger children eye play 1 or 2 or 3?)
4. any recommendations for other eyetoy games
5. i have read that lighting can be a problem with eyetoy games has anyone found this and how far do you need to be able to get from the tv?
thanks for any advice or suggestions. Like everyone am on a limited budget so don't want to make a purchase that won't be used (my husband will kill me!)

The Eyetoy wasn't a really hugely supported peripheral. I have one and I don't know anything about it. All I know is that it has no mic.
1) I don't think the black one really exist anymore do they? I have the silver one and I don't think I ever heard of the thing being or having a wide angle lens. I am not sure because when I plug it into the PS3 and check the accessories, it shows the image as a 4:3. ??? So I assume this wide angle thing is dependent on games? On the back of the Eyetoy Kinetic Box it states in a box: Includes: Eyetoy USB camera, A Full Vision Lens required (which is included in the box) Maybe that is what you are talking about.
2) I got my camera with Eyetoy Kinetic bundle. Would I recommend it? NO! Exercise and sports training games never have lasting appeal. If your someone who got Wiifit and attempted to use it but ended up storing it away, this is what the Eyetoy will do too. Kinetic is no different and if you don't have space of more than 2M, the game will constantly tell you: "Please Step Further Away From The Screen".
3) I don't have any Eye Play games so I can't comment.
4) I don't have any other game except a promo of Eyegroove and that is all. I don't even remember it too well. I think it was like a terrible version of Dance Dance Revolution...
5) Refer to 2). Lighting needs to be bright or you will have a very dark reflection on screen. I think you need some decent back light near you or the thing wont respond that well. It never responded too well in our crappy room light. All I can remember is with Kinetic is struggling to go through the menus because I think it had trouble recognising my hand movements. It required to do a Rimmer Salute (ever see Red Dwarf?) and we always struggled to get the game to go forward because we were furiously rotating our hand so quickly.
Due to my poor feedback, I think it is safe to say that the thing wont be heavily used and probably not worth it now. I don't even use it since I got it and the camera is used ever so occasionally when the PS3 games need a shot like in Burnout Paradise or LittleBigPlanet.

I used to like the Eyetoy Play games, played all three, but only owned the first and second. The first only had around 12 or so games, but the third had a hell of a lot more. Probably the best to get because of the variety of games. Although it didn't have the kung fu mini game that was in the first and second that I liked so much.

Yes, it's the ps2 eyetoy.
I don't have a ps3 eyetoy and won't be shelling out the cash for it.
My mate has the ps3 one and he uses it as a mic. _________________

EyeToy Play 1, 2 & 3
I also believe some of the SingStar supports the EyeToy also _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

Unless you're playing EyeToy Kinetic 1 or 2, it doesn't matter. And those two games were... average.

No idea.

1 is good for short mini games and is probably the best for younger children, 2 is more complicated but has more games plus TABLE TENNIS. I don't own 3.

EyeToy AntiGrav is really weird. But good. EyeToy Groove is also a fun moving game.

You need to be at least one and a half to two metres. Lighting is usually OK, although I find that if the light itself is in the picture, the camera won't work, full stop. As long as you don't have windows in the background it should be OK.
All SingStar PS2 games support the EyeToy.
I'm going to say this now: You're a little late to the party. If you can get them for a cheap $15 it's a good party game (we still use it when the cousins come over every once in a while), but apart from that... not much else. If you're into motion sensing stuff like this, I recommend a Wii. _________________

Eyetoy Play 3 is pretty fun.
Haven't tried Kinetic Combat, but the original Kinetic is almost amazing. I had the physical space to jump around a bit, but a good even and flat lighting setup is the key, and I didn't have that. As a result, bits of my hand would sometimes get washed out (and not recognised) because of the bright highlights on my walls, or flickering shadows would be detected as movement and be counted as actions that I never did. ...almost amazing, but for my house, near useless.
I really wish Sony redid Kinetic for PS3 with its better camera (unless that has the same light sensitivity problems?), as I reckon PS2's Kinetic in a well lit room would give a far better workout and training program than a Wii Fit.
Eyetoy Play 3 was heaps of fun though, and cared less about my lighting.. probably because the games are so short, casual, and rely on exaggerated movements compared to the more precise Kinetic moves. _________________ -- stuff I've made -- games, music, short film and animation -- www.rickyvuckovic.com -- enjoy!
