My entire department is the scapegoat. We've been trying to make things easier for everyone but we're cockblocked at every turn by people who hate IT for no reason what so ever. However the moment IT disappears, be it Air Con in the server room failing, power outage or just us celebrating something everyone cries as if the sky is falling.

Yeah, that's a pretty standard view of IT. Very common to hear people give unrealistic expectations or requests, followed by 'I don't care what you have to do, just make it work'. People don't understand IT, or what it does, they just know they need it, and that's often why the IT department is essentially there just to tread water, and is never properly developed and maintained. That's just the unfortunate truth: most people don't have a great grasp of computing, and that includes people in upper management, which leads to bugetary woes for the IT dept.
I hate the way other people treat IT within the company. Its treated like a capricious spirit or temperamental black magic, except those that understand it aren't elevated to reverential priesthood, but rather, marginalised as social outcasts with an electronic wrench. Anyone who doesn't know anything about computers, seems to treat IT workers like they have the skillset of a VCR programmer; A mix of surprise and condescention wash over their faces as they proclaim 'Wow its fixed! How did you do that?' Much like if you did them a small favour, like fixing a broom handle or getting a stain off their coffee cup...
TL;DR - IT sucks massive co- _________________

Not to pick on you or anything but from what I've seen you post in the PC Forums this is not quite true. Being "good" with computers does not qualify you to work in the industry. I work in IT and for my job, you need to patient and shrug off most abuse, be quick on your feet at diagnosing and fixing problems not to mention being able to escalate when needed, have the ability to teach others (again and again and again) as well as follow procedures.
I can tell you IT is a hellish underpaid job and you're the scapegoat for everything. Today I was abused five times by different people, had an Official Complaint filed against me (none of this was my fault), didn't get lunch till 2 pm which I had to pay for instead of the normal free lunch my workplace provided and on top of that I got kept back and had to piss bolt half the way to the station and only just made my train.
So yeah, keep away from IT. |
I suck at posting. 90% of my posts I write without thinking, delete a sentence near the beginning, put another part in without re-reading it etc, then when I eventually do read it again I realise it is either stupid or makes no sense. I really need to start reading and making sure what I post actually makes sense. Plus I rarely think about what I am posting, post while playing a game etc (often between pauses in WoW raids or between waves in Warcraft 3 TD, or when I die in Uncharted 2). I am actually pretty good with computers in real life. But I don't really know if I want to be in the IT industry, it's just something I thought of.

^ I'm pretty sure he was reffrerring to the content of the posts rather than the structure.
As for jobs in IT, if you love computers and you like customer service as well as being thick skinned and patient I say go for it. I personally love computers and have had about a year's experience in the industry (until my job unfortunately went under with the business I worked for) and I am eager to get back into it. Also, you might need to pick a particular aspect of computers to work with, you know the whole "jack of all trades, master of none" doesn't really kick it unless you like being a lackey boy. _________________

I think he's more referring to the fact that you went and stuck your OS folder in the trash on your mac and then questioned why you would have a backup of your hdd.
There's probably a lot more as well that he can add in himself. _________________

Yeah, that was really stupid, but that's just me. I always do stupid things just to see what will happen. Plus the OS was installed on a different partition as well, so I lost nothing, I just didn't know how to boot from it instead of the one in the trash. In the end it got me a fair amount of HDD space back anyway. But I wouldn't do anything like that if there was actually anything important on it or anything. I wouldn't have cared at all if I had to erase my HDD to fix it.

Let me tell you of a quick tale of woe relating to Mass Effect 2. My copy was express posted by EB on Monday, so in other words it was meant to be here yesterday.
So I get home yesterday at about 9pm and there is a delivery notice for me sitting there. This morning I head up to the post office (a 20 minute walk each way for me) and receive my brothers school books, after assuming Mass Effect 2 was waiting for me.
So dejected I walk home and when I get home remember that I can track my order via EB's site. I jump on and track my order. Where is it you ask? AT THE ******* POST OFFICE I JUST WENT TO!
Prick didn't leave a delivery notice for it (the other one only said 1 item to be picked up) and so when I got there the dude behind the counter didn't believe me, even though I had the damn tracking number and article id, and took 5 minutes of back and forth before he'd go check and after another few minutes of searching he walked out with my package containing my Mass Effect 2 CE.
Now I've gotten home and I'm too **** tired from walking the 2 trips to the Post Office and back and have lost the motivation to play it.
So in summary: **** YOU AUSTRALIA POST! _________________

This:
... combined with the fact that my primary mode of transport is motorcycle.
Was ok with my last job. If it was raining, I'd get a call in the morning to tell me not to worry about coming in and I'd spend rainy days all snug on the couch watching movies or playing games.
I'm currently waiting for a bit of a break so I can go get ME2. Then later on I have to make the 20min ride (with the majority of it through an 80km/h zone) to work, where I'll turn up looking like a drowned rat.

Less a 'What ticks me off' and more of a 'What made me sad' item...
Got news this morning that one of my old school friends may have been involved in a murder in my hometown...
Alas it was just confirmed...
http://www.mailtimes.com.au/news/local/news/general/murtoa-man-remanded-on-murder-charge/1736151.aspx
I was good mates with this guy throughout Primary School and most of High School...
He was never quite all there, he had a condition where his brain was slowly continuing to grow and it will eventually kill him, no matter how many pills he takes... His moods swung violently, but he was never violent towards me, apart from the beatings I dealt out when he dared take me on in Primary School...
Gods knows what lead to it and why he did it... But knowing that he was visibly upset at his remand hearing, he knows what he has done in the cold light of day...
I hadn't seen him much in recent years since moving to the big smoke... My brother actually ran into him, they were pretty good friends at one stage too, and shared a few brews at the local horse racing on New Years Day and he was doing ok... And seeing this, it breaks my heart, as I know the real him... _________________

my neighbours - who just moved into the apartment next door - they climbed over the 1.7m wall dividing our apartment. I came home tonight - I have an outdoor furniture set (with cushion) that I keep under a waterproof tarp - got home, tarp was off in places - which initially I attributed to "windy conditions"... but then when I tried to put it back - it has a system that I've set up, it turns out that the dirty end which is in-facing to my sliding doors is now on the balustrade side. a 1080 flip. So much so that I can't put the tarp over the 2+metre outdoor couch without taking off the tarp and rotating it.
And that can only happen if someone took it off and turned it around. They probably took it off and didn't figure that I had a system and then left it in a state.
I AM LIVID. Going to call the realtors and see who rented it. Then I'm going to go to the cops and file a report. I could easily be robbed by these people. I really don't want to be having a fight with the neighbours just yet.

Getting cut back to 2 shifts and only doing 8 hours a week. Asked my boss for more hours as I leave in a month and this is what I get. All other casual staff besides me and another (we've both been there the longest, even more than the manager) are getting at least 4 shifts, with one other getting more hours in 1 day then I do for a whole week. _________________
