Can anyone give suggestions for a good gym in Brisbane?

I've heard Jetts is pretty good for no frills gym experience, but lack of staff is a downside for beginners..such as myself. Though being able to hit the gym at odd hours of the morning would be pretty awesome.

Hey guys still going strong with the walking every morning and such but i was speaking to my doctor and he suggested this great idea i am trying atm. Basically its the points system where every good thing on the diet you get points for it.

Like with me when i get to 1000 points i get to spend $50 on myself from myself haha. Every 45min-1 hour walk i give myself 50 points. For every day i spend on the diet and not cheat thats 10 points and since i hate water i made myself for every glass i have i get 1 point. I really like this idea because it encourages you to stick with it.

So yeah its really awesome to strive for that goal!

so i have decided to take my running to the next level and run the SMH half marathon in may. i'm training 5 times a week (7km with a 10% increase each week) with a stretch or strength training session on my days off.

if anyone has run long distance/marathon i would be keen for some advice. all my research thus far has been from the internet. as a result, there isn't much consensus on the correct way to train so any real life experience would be appreciated.

if anyone is keen to join me and my friends, we will be training at UNSW twice a week

@Itachi - Nice for you to be going to the doctor for this issue and not some random health company icon_biggrin.gif . I had been to a random health company (my best friend works in it) and she told me how I need to be 62 kgs and I don't need to exercise to be that thin and "healthy"

I went to the doctor and told her should I be 62kgs. She had a heartattack!!! At the very very most I should be 65kg (or even just remain now but mum hates that because I'm still not thin enough) but also what's important is exercise and eating right. Phew, I reached the acceptable weight of 68kg but I'll try go to the very very most of 65kg.

@Garth - If his walk takes 50 points for a 45-1 hours, McDonalds should be like 50+ points icon_razz.gif

Note, I haven't had fast food in a while. The last time I had it, I thought KFC tastes disgusting!!! ewww..... why did I bother to eat such yucky thing like that! I guess a good thing is now I know I'm not addicted to junk food, suits my diet well icon_biggrin.gif

Yo KT, if your ready to do an 8km race if you keep training after that event you'll be in awesome condition for city to surf! You might even be able to start with a faster group.

best form of training for long distance running is......... long distance running.
The way I do it is pretty simple, do a set distance, record your time, set a goal, when you hit that goal increase the distance.

C2S is about 14km, which sounds like a big jump, but once you can run for about 8 to 10km your body is repairing itself as you run so the jump from 8 to 14 won't feel like the jump from 2k to 8k.

i think after a half marathon, the C2S isn't such a big milestone. i've been running moderate distance recreationally for a while now, but i think a challenge like this would be a good experience. now of to the gym for a weight session.

anyone go to Fenix gyms?

Im going to cancel my member and move to a cheaper gym.

I've been at my gym for about 18 months so I don't think im under any kind of contract anymore. But I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I should expect any cancellation fee's? etc?

My gym's weekend staff seem to be clueless about cancellations etc.

How long was your original contract? When I quit mine 18 months after I signed up I was out of the contract so I just had to give 1 months notice. No probs.

12 months, so I am assuming there will be no problems, just a few mates of mine warned about how pushy some gyms can get when you try to cancel..

and im planning to sign up for the new gym tomorrow (last day of cheap sign up) and yeah just wanting to pretty be sure I know I wont get stung.

Ahk, in that case they can't force fees towards you. They did seem a bit pushy to me when I left but I just told them how im going into the RAAF blah blah. Worse comes to worse make up some story. They can't not let you leave.

I'm currently in a very confused state in my weight-loss. No matter what I do, I will still be a fat person in my family weird minds. I wish they had the same syndrome as I did so they can have their weight added so much it's hard to maintain so they know how I feel.

A few weeks back, my doctor was more than happy for me to be a BMI of 24 and said I can be at that if I want. Even if that was the case my aim was to lose 5 extra kg (to BMI of 22). Doctor said it's fine but looked like she had a heart-attack when I said 10 more. I was in a really happy mood that the doctor backed me up. Now all I need to do was focus on exercise and lose that remaining 5 kgs.

Yesterday, I decided to tell mum what the doctor said and she was pissed off. She was like "what does the doctor knows about health" and then start yelling that "did you know your sister and I find it disguising you are fat and that you not thin like your sister yet (she has a BMI of 16 and is so proud that she is so skinny and eats so very little to starve herself often)". Then I told her, if a person is exercising a lot like a sport star and has a BMI of 22, is that more healthier than a thin person who does not exercise with a BMI of 17. She picked the non-exercising thin person over the other one. So yeah, I am really sad now that knowing my sister and my mum behind my back bitching how fat I am and they find that its "affecting their lives". (Note: my sister did in the past said "I am ashamed of myself for having a fat sister"... back when I had a BMI of 24.9).

Luckily I have my other half who isn't as crazy as my family who is paranoid of non-thin people (you got no idea how fucking annoying my sister is when we go out, "fat person at 9 o'clock!!! lose some weight fat shit!"). He is so supportive of me and even though I was actually thin because it's hard to tell from where he lives since there are so many more people bigger than me and his family is always like "Tina, I wish I could be as thin as you!". He also reminded me so often losing weight shouldn't be my biggest priority, it's fitness and healthy eating icon_smile.gif

Tina.....First of all, you're not fat. You look like a healthy weight.

Secoundly (and non offence), but what the hell is wrong with your Mum. She should be supportive of both her daughters and not put you down all the time.

I can tell you right now that its better to a normal weight and maintain healthy eating and excercise, than it is to be skinny and starve yourself (thats seriously damaging to your organs etc).

Your body needs food and nutrition to maintain itself, if the body is starved, its doing serious damage.

When I started exercising, I could only run on the spot for 10 minutes (I was known to have bad cardio/stamina since I couldn't walk for very long) once a day. Now I'm doing 25 minutes twice a day and soon will push my body to 30 minutes twice a day icon_smile.gif and getting to normal weight was because of exercising. Now I can go walking for longer too!!

I'll just have to continue to ignore my family and listen to people on exercising icon_biggrin.gif

^wait, if you can run 25 minutes without stopping you would beat about 95% of the population.

If you were doing that inside a gym people would be jealous of you, and you watch people come and go while you did your run.

I doubt I was am great icon_razz.gif , I should've called it more a fast jog than a run since a job is more a slower pace right and is on the spot. (And I sweat epic amounts when I finished as well :S ).

But I do wish to get a treadmill one day, might help me run fast then trying it at home or probably a stepping board.

Being able, and even just actually doing, a run/jog for 25 to 30 minutes a day is better than most people. to do it twice a day is really good and no matter what your hitler mum says you should be proud of yourself!

maybe offer them a challenge 'ok, well if i'm so fat and unhealthy you super fit people should have trouble beating me around the park' do it! have THE RACE.

Keep up the good work! icon_smile.gif

No offence but you should tell your mum and sis to grow up, get a life and enter the REAL world, not stay in some fantasy magazine world where all the girls/women look more like broomsticks than people.

Does your sis have a bf? If not then it seems you are doing something right wheras you sis is just some disgusting bean pole Betty (just guessing from your post that she's yucky skinny) with no bf.

This may seem harsh but they are family and are supposed to support you, not talk shit about you.If they can't do thatthen there's no reason you should be nice to them.

^Yeah, my sister doesn't have a bf atm and they both do read a lot of fashion magazine, while I don't as I found gaming/computer magazines a more enjoyable read rather than looking at stick figures icon_biggrin.gif . O well, they can forever be disgusted at me for life icon_biggrin.gif . Thank you everyone for all the encourage word, not easy when I do spend most of the time at home at the moment (looking for a job).

Since I also have a feeling I am getting a job soon, I have also start planning on my lunch when I do have a job and also getting some lunch boxes/Tupperware. Last thing I want is a developed bad eating habits while at work.

Imo as long as you excercise 6 days a week and eat decent no one can go wrong.

@ Island_Wolf - Everyone loves a woman with curves, your sis sounds like a stick figurine, frankly the women with stick legs are the ones that disgust me. And that whole "Hey fatty lose some weight thing" is so not cool. I can speak for experience, as my bro use to call me out all the time for being fat then I pretty much lost weight, got better grades than him, ran city 2 surf, took up weights, took up boxing. You betchyo ass I stuck it to his face, and will be for the rest of his life. (P.S. The love is still there icon_razz.gif its just playful "lol I own you" )

Theres something to look foward to, being able to stick it to your mother and sister, but the main thing is as long as you feel good about yourself, and how you physically feel, thats all the matters, thats where the confidence comes from. Didn't read much of your posts so I don't know too much of what you are doing, but if you are going to gym and have a good protein diet, doesn't matter about your weight at all - it seriously does not, remember muscle weighs more than fat, the only thing you should be concerned of if we want to talk fat loss, is the inches you are losing.
