Yep but that doesn't mean they can't release something new in the meantime. It just means they have promised to support it for 10 years.

I don't think I've gotten enough games out of the PS3 to even consider next gen yet.

If the current gen of consoles games ends now, it'll just be a few gems among a disappointing amount of 720p@30 frames per second+screen tearing games. Not exactly the gaming orgasm we were promised a few years back.

I think the media really likes to hear news of a new console cause it's a minefield of EXCLUSIVES!, LARGE CROWDS! and HYPE!

Won't surprise me if they upgrade it in a few years. PC's are getting better and better, and consoles are still using old hardware, and staying the same. At least now developers know how to use the hardware properly so can create better games, but still.

I have a theory that they will be using a new optical disk technology when PS4 do ever come about.

PSX - CD drive
PS2 - DVD drive
PS3 - Bluray drive
PS4 - ???

My theory is they will stick with BD's or go digital downloads but having said that I read that there has been a holographic disc invented.....

Haha ok I had to do that. I believe something like this:

PSX - CD drive
PS2 - DVD drive
PS3 - Bluray drive
PS4 - 1TB HDD + BD + Some type of 3D Tech... I dunno.

I'm happy to play my PS3 for another 2-3 years to be honest. icon_razz.gif The graphics on these babies are still acceptable. If they want to do a next gen console. I expect minimum, crysis level graphics with 4xAA + min 30 locked FPS.

Oh, another thing it needs, support for decent resolutions. A lot of games don't even run at 1280x720, which, honestly, is kinda crap. My 10 year old PC screen had a resolution of that, and now it's becoming acceptable for consoles? 1920x1080 should be standard on the next consoles, but by then most people will be playing PC games in 2560x1600 (/1440).

you don't really need any more resolution imo. 1080p is good.

.. even that is dependent on how big your tv is, and how close you sit to your screen. The eye can only resolve that much detail. Do we even need 2560x1600? No.

The way the games like uncharted are evolving i will be happy with my ps3 for another 5+ years i still love my ps2 and it's been going for 10 years and its still getting new releases(even if they are releasing shovelware) i can see the ps3 having a longer support life than the ps2 hopefully

I am hedging my bets that both ps3/xbox360 will be around for awhile. I mean, isn't that the point of natal? To extend the life of x360. Same with PS3 and its motion controller. I think both developers are going to concentrate on this before releasing their next iterations.

Also Sony, just released the slim - so.. yeah, 2012 and we'll see PS4 at a trade show/E3. 2013 release.

Well for monitors high resolutions are awesome, but I just want all games to be native 1080P. Sucks spending money on something full HD and hardly any games taking advantage of it.

Anyway, by 2020 they hope to have Super Hi-Vision, with a resolution of 7680x4320, which would make 1080P obsolete. Here's a comparison of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:UHDV.svg

But who knows if that will become the standard, would be pretty awesome if it did.

Compare your 10 year old PC screen to a 10 year old tv? Not the same is it, its only since the new wave in tvks have we seen a dramtic increase in resolution and that being my point, if the resoultions were higher a lot of people probably wouldn't of bought a PS3 or 360 at launch because they wouldn't of worked on their old tv. Actually come to think of it you would of been in the same boat. Why would sony and microsoft exclude the majority when most people at that time didn't own a HD tv?

It's not the resolution that consoles support that's the problem, it's the fact that the consoles are too weak to sustain native 1080p and such.

1080p still looks pretty good, and most games don't support it natively, instead opting out for 720p with 2xMSAA or a lower res because they're using some special methods, and then upscaled. It REALLY sucks, and does indeed go to show how technically weak the consoles actually are, particularly against PCs.

When the next bout of consoles do arrive, I expect to see full support for the resolutions they claim to support - none of this compromised rubbish, because bar from a few developers and games the next gen movement on consoles has been disappointing in terms of technical advancements.

Should try 2560x1600 sometime. It alters opinions, significantly.

If they had made the consoles actually able to support 1080P, what's wrong with that? PC's have been doing it for years, yet consoles only support low resolutions. And they would have still supported 480i/P, they wouldn't just drop support for that. But I suppose it's too much to hope for consoles ever looking nearly as good as PC's.

Plus try and find a TV with a native resolution above 1080p.

Yeah but why bother adding all that tech back in 07 or 06 (I can't remember when the PS3 and 360 came out) when the majority didn't have HD tv's? Obviously things are different now and you can pick up a full HD tv on the cheap but back then it wasn't the standard. If anything I saw this generation pushing consumers into upgrading to a new tv set they probably had for years.

Had they made them so they could output at 1080p natively it would of cost us a whole lot more as that tech was still too expensive for the average consumer to pick up.
