I was in the exact same boat as you a few months ago. Here are a few recommendations:
- Fullmetal Alchemist
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion
- Gantz
- Ergo Proxy
- Black Lagoon
There are two versions of Fullmetal Alchemist; the original series which came out a few years ago and a remake called Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The latter follows the storyline of the manga much more closely. Both are awesome, although Brotherhood isn't finished yet and hasn't been dubbed in english, so if you don't like reading subs just watch the original.
Also, it isn't really an "action" or sci-fi series, but I wholly recommend Death Note. It's my favourite anime series and definitely worth watching. Kind of hard to describe what it's like, but think crime thriller with some supernatural elements. _________________

I'd recommend starting with the three biggest ones: Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. They're animes that follow the same style/format of DBZ, with the main character and his group of powerful buddies getting stronger and beating people up for various reasons. If you are looking for series that have an end, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are both 26 episode series that are pretty cool - and notable for both having a decent english dub, so you don't even need to watch the subtitled version.
Macka has a nice list of sci-fi animes, although I'm not sure I could recommend Code Geass, Gantz or Ergo Proxy to someone new to anime, as they are a bit out there and might take some getting used to watching anime for a while before you just accept the crazy, often convoluted plots sci-fi animes love to pursue. With that in mind, Ghost in the Shell is an awesome sci-fi anime with some pretty high production values... _________________

Ohh man i was such a big dragon ball z fan and i really go upset since it came to an end..... I thought shit i will never ever find another great anime as good as dbz until i found Naruto. Seriously man i would check it out. First i would find out what epsidoes in naruto are filler and just skip them. If you do that i am sure you will like it! Good luck! _________________

I've been watching Macross Frontier, which is sort of like a space gundam style anime. The action scenes are one of the best I've seen, and while the character buildup scenes aren't the best, you might like them.
I just finished Valkyrie Chronicles, which has a decent storyline, though I suppose the ending wasn't as strong as I expected. Nevertheless, its a fairly good anime, which revolves around WWII-esque scenes, with a touch of fantasy aspects.
Though in my opinion, the best anime of all time will be Wolf's Rain. I dont know if its down your alleyway, but it is a fantasy epic anime revolving around a pack of Wolf-god like creatures trying to find a place called "Paradise". It is a really sad and moving anime, and while it didn't really seem like a good anime the first time I watched it, I started liking it more and more afterwards by thinking about it. Its one of those things that make you think about life and relationships. _________________

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was watching Gundam 00 on the madman site and man it was awesome, gunna have to watch em all. Fullmetal Alchemist is on there too so I'll try that next. I'd be interested in Valkyria Chronicles as I love the game. Does it have the same VA?
Anyway off to watch GITS. _________________ "Gentlemen we just seized an airfield... That was pretty f***ing ninja."

As far as I know, Valkyria Chronicles doesn't have a dub at this point. I wouldn't bother with it though, personally I thought it was a pretty lousy anime. It starts off alright, but then it gets bogged down in random crap after the first few eps.
I have an original suggestion for an anime to watch: Fairy Tail. I'm surprised that I'm the only one here who's watching it, it's great. If you like One Piece, then you'll definitely like Fairy Tail. If you like DBZ, then you'll probably like One Piece. _________________

If you liked Gundam 00 you might wanna go back to where it all started with the original series, Mobile Suit Gundam. Sure the animation is old compared to today's standards but it is still a worthwhile watch. _________________

I've been watching Valkyria Chronicles and have almost finished it and oddly enough really liked it... though this opinion seems to be very against popular opinions on other forums as well.
For me I just really liked the main characters and the overall setting and plot of the anime where theres a sense of duty and struggle.
Though I do agree the plot does go off track and the flow is inconsistent where it starts out slow explaining things and letting things develop. But by the end they seem to be rushing as if they dont have enough time to do everything thats needed and start skipping things to the point where it doesnt really make sense how something happened.
But it just never really bothered me that much as long as you focus on the main 3 (or 4) characters rather than the problems with the other characters and the small holes; it is done very well. There interactions and personalities alone were interesting enough for me lol. Also maybe because the combination of the setting resembling WWII just made it that much more attractive to me lol.
Its quite obvious that a major problem when making this anime was that they needed to include all the prominent characters from the game but they never had enough time to develop most of them properly either than the main few.

In my opinion, I reckon Valkyria Chronicles started off really strong, but tapered off towards in the end with all that stuff about the magic. I was hoping for a more realistic anime. _________________

Hopefully can get Rurouni Kenshin collection 2 and maybe 3 tomorrow.
It's probably because I watched Samurai X first but I prefer Sano's voice in SX.It makes it even worse that Sano's SX voice actor does little bits of other chracter voices in RK. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

Fairy Tail is pretty damn good i have only seen 3 episodes so far and i plan to watch the rest tonight. All i hope is if they have long arcs or a "Main story line" they sometimes go back to. Either way i reckon it will be a keeper.

Rurouni Kenshin another great anime imho. I still can't believe they do a re dub of the show. I really thought the first dub was awesome but i was watching foxtel one day and i heard the re dub and shit it was horrible. I really hope the collection has the first dub hey... _________________

Anime thread!
I like anime, though I mostly read manga.
I has question! Do people here buy their anime/manga or do you guys just stream/download it all?
Anyone collect anime/manga and stuff? I'd like to see photos or even upload my own, but don't know if this thread is for that kind of stuff.
Now to keep on topic with all the other posts, I'm currently watching Lucky Star. I'm not impressed, it's entertaining enough but reminds me a lot of Azumanga Diaoh, but now with a character obsessed with anime and other geeky things, making her more appealing to fans of geeky things (geeky in a good way!). _________________ The best FPS is Pokemon Snap Facebook Group

Potential watchers of Lucky☆Star should be warn as it is meant to be full of parodies, heavy tie-ins with Full Metal Panic (FUMOFFU to be exact) and Suzumiya Haruhi. There are parodies on others as well like Da Capo and Miku etc.
Aside from series parodies, it also covers all types of anime chara-design in the the different characters i.e. maganeko, klutz, tsundere, otaku/gamer-gal, imoto moe, gaijin otaku, irresponsible sensei etc. that are very subtle.
With parodies content, you got to know it else you won't enjoy it. In fact, I missed out alot of other parodies as the coverage is so large. I don't even know half of the OP/ED sang in the karaoke in the ending for example, since it covers past anime as well as Live Action which I don't watch.
If you do not watch alot of anime outside of australia, I wouldn't recommend Lucky☆Star and the likes. Unlike Genshiken which is also heavy on parodies, it still has a story plot while Lucky☆Star storyline is near nonexistence.

I'm watching Fairy Tail. I watch pretty much anything from Sho Jump that makes it over 100 chapters.
Fairy Tail is awesome with a really good funny cast of characters. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Well the dub the DVD's have is the same as Samurai X which I used to watch on SciFi except for Sano's voice. The names are also different. On SX Kenshin was Kenshi, Yohiko was called Yoshi and I can't remember what Miss Kaorou was called in it.
Also iirc in SX Kenshin didn't add stuff like "that he will" at the end of some sentences.Though I actually like him adding those little bits in RK.
So I don't know which dub is which. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

I watched the Hellsing Ultimate OVA VII the other day. Fucking Brutal. As always though, its extremely well animated, voiced and paced. The art style is something else, filled with thick lines, specks of CGI where appropriate and a good measure of fluidity to the character's movements... Certainly not my favourite of the OVAs, but after seeing the trailer for number 8, it looks like the last 3 are going to be the best - Anyone who doesn't know the series should look it up asap, it is pretty universally recognised as being awesome, although it isn't for the weak hearted (or stomached). _________________

Do you prefer Satelight's relative 'realistic' animation or Madhouse's stylish approach?

To be honest, I prefer the stylish approach. I'll have to rewatch some of the older episodes and compare, but if I remember correctly, I found the Madhouse stuff to be more asthetically pleasing. I am a fan of the heavy use of lighting and shadowing in anime though, so that might be a big part of it. It works really well to set the tone in a horror sort of anime, and the inculsion of stark colour contrasts, deep shadows and bolded lines really emphasise that.
I don't always go for the hyper-stylized look though, I just think it works really well for this anime. Its things like seeing Alucard's hair splayed out and coloured all black - with no definition given to the separate strands, and the deep red glow of his eyes through the shadowing that help emphasise his inhuman qualities, while this sort of art style wouldn't stick if the anime was a highschool-drama, or even in something like Evangelion, as it would trivialize the violence and distance the viewer from the characters...
Yeah, my thoughts in an incredibly long-winded nutshell... _________________
