Oh so many to choose from...

I think I'll stick to the theme of Alundra for this post. An amazing game which captured music accurately (and used a good variety of tones) to the theme of the scene. It's too bad it slipped under the radar for most people.

Town music:

Nightmare: (Dreams being a theme of the game)

Overland theme:

Sad theme:

Another dream theme:

Gamesta posted some great Metal Gear songs before, but i've got post 'Love Theme' from the first trailer for Guns of the Patriots.

quite like mirrors edge 'still alive' instramental too. rather soothing.

The silent hill's are full of great music. including homecoming. One more soul to the call is probably my favourite thing about that game.

from 'the room' Room of Angels'

and 'Theme of Laura' from Silent hill 2. song can send shivers up my spine.

Can't say I'm surprised by the responses so far, but I am surprised by the lack of my favourite soundtracks on people's lists so far.

The entire Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack is brilliant. The kind of soundtrack that works brilliantly within the game, and can also be listened to and enjoyed as much outside the game as well. It's seven years old now, and still feels as fresh and relevant as anything I've heard this year.

Jet Force Gemini. Without a doubt, one of the best soundtracks of the N64 era. Every level had a unique personality, backed up with some of the greatest compositions ever to come out of Rareware.

Bioshock. This song was like daggers through my heart when I ventured into Rapture. With Atlas' desperate situation unfolding over the radio, the city in ruins, and having just experienced an intense opening sequence, the despair was driven home hard by this piece of music.

Faxanadu. 18 years after first playing it, I can still recall this melody off the top of my head with eerie accuracy.

Shadow of the Colossus. My favourite videogame soundtrack of all time. I can't listen to this track without being instantly brought to tears.

Bayonetta. I know you haven't played it yet, but trust me when I say that I get goosebumps listening to this piece. The game has an absolutely breathtaking soundtrack. Skip to 4:50, and you'll hear the part that literally stopped me in my tracks just to enjoy it.

Lair. Yes, that Lair. One of the most derided PS3 titles ever also happens to have one of the single most epic soundtracks ever contributed to a videogame. This is the kind of soundtrack you'd expect from a $200m Hollywood blockbuster, not a sub-par PS3 action game. The composer, John Debney, is best known for his work in film. How he landed this job, I guess we'll never know. Thankfully, the collaboration spawned such incredible pieces as the one I posted above.

Prince of Persia. Absolutely beautiful. Anyone who's played the game can attest to its incredible score. It was repeated over and over throughout the game, but I never tired of it.

Heroes of Might and Magic III. Every single town had a memorable, immersive score. I'd often spend several minutes in my town just enjoying the soundtrack. You can see why by clicking 'play' above, and check out the others on youtube.

Assassin's Creed II. Surely I'm just putting this on the list because of its recent release, still hyped up about it? No. The game has a genuinely amazing soundtrack. This entire track gives me goosebumps. It served to make Venice an incredibly immersive place to explore.

And last of all, the brilliant soundtrack to Donkey Kong Country 2. There's no doubt in my mind that this is the greatest soundtrack from the 16-bit era, if not one of the best soundtracks of all time. Every track was an absolute gem.

And just to back up my assertion of it being one of the best soundtracks ever, here's another of my favourite tracks. I could listen to this for hours.

Argh. I wasn't planning to post more than one or two videos. But hey, I have a huge love for videogame soundtracks. They've made up a large part of my music listening over the last 20 years. icon_smile.gif

Lair love! Yes, that game had absolutely astonishing music, making the game that much more epic to play. That particular track is also my favourite. Colossus is also my favourite OST of all time.

Time for my submissions:

Wrath of the Lich King

I cannot believe this hasn't been mentioned. WotlK was an amazing experience when questing with the music in the background. The best piece from the OST however is "Arthas, my Son", played in the intro of the game. It tells a story of tragedy and darkness, a tragedy that Arthas, now the Lich King, caused. Haunting and beautiful, I always have tears swelling up listening to this. Passionate fan is passionate!

The Witcher

The Witcher is my favourite RPG, and also holds some of my favourite kinds of music. Having a similar tone much to that of celtic folk and eastern european sound, Witcher's music both suits the mood of the games settings and plays with your heart strings with much of its sound. This is my favourite "River of Life":

Okami

A game very close to my heart which also holds an incredible soundtrack. Okikurmi The Hero is my favourite track, which reminds me of that particular scene in the game, portraying an incredible amount of emotion in the sound alone:

Demigod

Though less known, Howard Mostrom's work on Demigod cannot be denied. Featuring very tribal and heart pounding music, it works incredibly well in the heat of battle, setting the scene for an intense and blood-stained battlefield, about 1:45 is the part where it really kicks into high gear:

Ikaruga

One of my favourite games of all time, and it also has a soundtrack that propelled it to that stage. Once you understand the story, the sacrifice and everything associated with the scene where this music kicks in, it hits you a whole lot harder, particularly because it's so close to the end of it as well. A beautiful piece matching the final area of the game incredibly

That's all I can think of for the moment. Props to Bronze for already picking up Colossus though <3

Not exactly VGM, but:

I totally forgot how cool the Mass Effect credits music was, so I checked out the band, Faunts. Turns out they're Canadian indie-rock, and their latest album Feel.Love.Thinking.Of is awesome.

I am amazed you knew where to start! Great choice though. The entire soundtrack for the game is incredible, and each piece really sets the tone for the zone that you enter. My personal favorite was always Gnomeregan's theme... I don't know why, but it just really gets me going.

Something a little different: Zen Bound on the iPhone is a wonderful puzzle game. A real work of art, with a beautiful, minimal, downtempo soundtrack by Ghost Monkey. When you buy the game, you receive a download link for the mp3s of the music. Having completed the game ages ago, the music is still on high rotation on my iPod.

Fallout 1: Theme. I have so many emotions tied to this song I wouldn't know where to start. Hi 5 to anyone whos ever playing and actually LIKED fallout 1.

DDR: Silent Hill You're not here - Feat. Heather. Best SH protagonist imo. Don't mind the crappy recording quality on this one.

The opening to ff7 in all its midi glory icon_biggrin.gif Fast forward to about 0:58 to hear the actual song.

Shining force II town theme song. Brings back some awesome memories. Pretty sure I've sunk more time into this game than I've done for FF7+8+9 combined.

Finally, Rocket Jump Waltz - Tf2

Quoted because I'm actually listening to it now.

As I'm at work I cannot link some music, but generally the music in Touhou is fantastic. I'll post some when I'm home.

Shame about Lair. That really is an awesome track, so it not only looks pretty, it also sounds astounding. Man... what were those devs thinking haha.

Oh yes and I love the main battle theme that goes with each and every Shadow of the collusses stage.

My turn

I only got time to post a few songs so I do a few ps2 games

First song is from the game Legend of Legaia 2 :duel saga, its composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and is called Fight, then Riot!. This to me is one of the best opening music for an RPG mainly cause I never heard anything like it

Here is a song from the game Unlimited Saga. Its called Laura's theme and its by Masashi Hamauzu. The reason why I love and included this song describes Laura perfectly (especially from the 57 second mark).

Now this next song is from Arc the Lad:Twilight Of The Spirits and is called The Hear by Yuko Fukushima but I couldn't find it on youtube so I have to give the link

http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/dl/324/136722/Arc%20The%20Lad%204%20Twilight%20Of%20Spirits%20Original%20Game%20Soundtrack/21-the_hear.mp3

Now to prove I play more games then RPG this next game is a cult classic called God Hand and if you played the game, this song needs no introduction.

Now last and not least, even though this song is a remix of a song in a game I still find it amazing. This is called Balance Valley which was done by Kenji Ito on the Dark Chronicle Arranged album. This has to be one of my top song in a video game because the way it was just arranged.(For some reason on this clip the song ends at 3:47 but it keeps going)

I spent way too long finding those songs and when I have time I will include some more songs

No love for Castlevania? I would have thought the CV series would have been given kudos too, if Metroid has been getting love... ah well, we can fix that!

From humble beginnings in the NES days, with simple but well constructed and punchy tunes:

Heart of Fire (Castlevania)

Bloody Tears (Castlevania II: Simon's Quest)

... to gradually more and more layered and complex tunes:

Simon Belmont's Theme (Super Castlevania IV)

Iron blue Intention (Castlevania Bloodlines)

... to my all time favourites, in their orchestrated, CDA glory:

Prayer (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night)

Nocturne (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night)

Lost Paintings (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night)

Dance of Pales (Castlevania: Symphony of the Night)

... and then a step back as cartridge based gaming becomes the home of choice for discerning CV games, without losing much of the grandeur:

Banquet of Madness (Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin)

Gears go Awry (Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin)

Behind the Gaze (Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin)

So, so many awesome gaming tunes - so little bandwidth to use up! Seriously though, the OST for SOTN is magical... easily my favourite gaming music, right up there with Chrono Trigger and Cross, the Jet Set Radio titles, and that one weird pirate copy of Crazy Taxi I played that had the original songs replaced by Offspring and Deftones tracks =D

Oh dear, I probably mention VG music about as often as the AVGN mentions Castlevania. This post could take a while, so let's do a blowout.

Corridors of Time (Chrono Trigger)
Probably my favorite track from the Chrono series.

The Man With The Machine Gun (Final Fantasy VIII)
FF8 might be not the most popular in the series, but the music is top notch.

Terra (Final Fantasy IX)
No words. Just Listen.

The Sanctuary of Zi'tah (Final Fantasy XI
Who cares if it's an MMO, the music is still amazing

Dragon Roost Island (Wind Waker)
Gotta have some Zelda love somewhere.

Stardust Speedway (Sonic CD)
Sonic CD's soundtrack is a timeless classic

Trombe! (Super Robot Wars)
The best ascended bug eve- *TROMBE OVERRIDES*
(Honorable mentions to Ice Man, Marrionette Messiah, and Dark Knight )

Touhou Project
Hooboy. The music for this series is what originally attracted me to it, it would be difficult to pick out favorite tracks from it, but I'll have a shot.

Stage Themes
The Fantastic Legend of Tohno (Perfect Cherry Blossom)
The Capital City of Flowers in the Sky (Perfect Cherry Blossom)
Voyager 1969 (Imperishable Night)
The Gensokyo The Gods Loved (Mountain of Faith) - If you only listen to one of these, dear God listen to this one
Tomorrow Will Be Special, Yesterday Was Not (Mountain of Faith)
Hellfire Mantle (Subterranean Animism)
Sky Ruin (Undefined Fantastic Object)
Rural Makai City Esoteria (Undefined Fantastic Object)
UFO Romance in the Night Sky (Undefined Fantastic Object)

Boss/Character Themes
Ghostly Band ~ Phantom Ensemble (Perfect Cherry Blossom)
A Maiden's Illusionary Funeral ~ Necro-Fantasy (Perfect Cherry Blossom)
Dream Battle ~ Maiden's Capriccio (Imperishable Night)
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (Imperishable Night)
White Flag of Usa Shrine (Phantasmagoria of Flower View)
The Venerable Ancient Battlefield ~ Suwa Foughten Field (Mountain of Faith)
Native Faith (Mountain of Faith)
Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion (Subterranean Animism)
Captain Murasa (Undefined Fantastic Object)
Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind (Undefined Fantastic Object)
Unknown X ~ Unfound Adventure (Touhou Hisoutensoku)

*breathe*

I think we're done here, also, apologies to lapzod.

There is tons more that I cant think of at the moment that are great. They are mostly from old rpgs or adventure games and are probably clouded in a thick mist of nostalgia, but I dont care. Hope you enjoy.

I think the wild arms soundtrack has a few good tunes, here are my favourite that I can think of

Wild Arms -Filgaia Overworld - A classic that greets you upon entering the world map and it always seems to cheer me up.

Wild Arms OP - I first rented this game out from a video store one weekend and I restarted it at least 5 times to listen to this song before I played any of the game. This song is amazing

Maniac Mansion - All of it is clearly made of pure win.

LBA2 - Such a great game and awesome music

Vandal Hearts - One of my favourite strategy games, only strengthened by well composed pieces of music
