PlayTV Gets Even Better With 1.21 Update

Hi Guys,

We have now released the latest PlayTV software update (1.21) for you and here’s what it will do -

* Play TV now lets you Watch, Pause and Record High Definition TV for DVB-T standard broadcast. In countries that are launching free digital HD channels you will now be able to both watch and record them through your PS3 with PlayTV.
* Aino remote play support. If you get the new Sony Ericsson Aino mobile phone with PS3 remote play features, we have optimized the user interface of PlayTV for the mobile phone screen so that you get the best mobile PlayTV experience possible.
o Update of the PS3 to System Software 3.0. The update 3.0 for your PS3, if you haven’t done it already, will make sure that you have the mobile phone function in the remote play settings. You will need this if you want to experience PlayTV on the go with your Aino mobile phone.
* Better standard definition upscaling. We have managed to improve the SD upscaling feature of PlayTV so when you are watching SD channels on an HD screen they will look as good as they possibly can.

JB Hi Fi have a new ps3 deal.

250gb ps3 slim, play tv, hdmi cable and assassins creed for $599.

seems like a pretty good deal if your looking for play tv and some more storage.

^I'm thinking of upgrading my ps3 hard drive actually. Its a stock 40gb, but upgraded to 250gb myself. Though at the moment I've only got about 100gb left. Combine this with the fact that 30min sd wills set you back 1.1gb..it kinda starts to add up.

ALSO.

PLAY TV WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH PC AS WELL!

Whirlpool Wiki wrote:
Can I use the PlayTV hardware on my computer?

Yes, with the patch and driver available
That settles it. I'm getting it.here .

This has been tested by boric and confirmed to work in Windows Media Centre under Vista. Bowds has confirmed that it can also be used in Windows 7. SBS (and therefore UHF frequencies) can be received and both tuners can be used to record in HD without stuttering.

There is a linux patch and driver available as well.

A Mac OSX driver does not appear to be available.

Well. That settles it. I'm getting it.

Well that is interesting.

I mean, I already have a DVB tuner for PC so I don't have use for PlayTV on my computer.

But good for all the folk who don't. icon_y1.gif

Regarding remote play to control the ps3 for playtv, does the psp need the latest firmware? I have a psp, 1st gen, with cfw 3.80 m-33. (Old school; yeah I know); would that work?

I also need to go shopping for bunny ears.. is there any features I should be looking for? Or just any cheap $20 pair would suit?

Yeah, that will work. Locally.

Not over the net though. (up to date official firmware for that)

Okay, so this Play TV thing looks great. Price is pretty reasonable and I'm sick of not having digital TV. My only concern is the amount of time the PS3 will spend switched on.

I would hope Sony wouldn't release something like this without being fairly certain that the PS3 won't overheat and burn out from constant use. It gets fairly hot from a long gaming session, but I'm inclined to think it won't get so hot from being used as a PVR. If this were being released for the Xbox, however, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. And before anybody accuses me of being a fanboy, I have both consoles.

So, what do you guys think? Will my PS3 slim melt into a black gooey mess from being left switched on for 10 hours at a time? Am I being paranoid? And if so, is it not possible they are still out to get me?

Give it to me straight, I can take it.

If any console is well ventilated, it should (in theory) not heat up over the recommended specs (and therefore play forever). Note the words well ventilated, so that means no dust in the filters to keep heat and stuff.

And there is a fan on the thing, so...

Also, if you've done a day long gaming session on it, you've probably done about 10 hours straight anyway.

EDIT: Also, it's been used in Europe for about 2 years now, and no-one's chucked a complaint anywhere AFAIK...

So anyone bought one yet? Any good?

I have a question, Does it only have antenna in? (and not out)

Most DVR/VCRs have antenna in and out so you can watch TV without using the DVR, but I have only seen photos of the front of PLay TV box and it seems to only have antenna in.

Only has an in. You'll need a splitter if you want the antenna to go straight to your TV as well as the PlayTV.

What kind of antenna are you using? I talked to the guys in the television/home ent. department at work and they reckon the portable/bunny ear antennas won't give a good enough signal or something?

That's a really good point, I'm glad you brought it up. I'm currently using my PS3 on an LCD computer monitor, so hooking Play TV up to my SD TV is going to be an interesting challenge. For me, it's going to be a case of buying an extra long antennae cable and using the (fortunately) really long PS3 Av cables to connect to my SD TV. Either that, or I use an extra long cable to connect Play TV to the PS3 and situate it near the antennae socket.

Either way, I still want to play games on my HD monitor, but really don't care if I watch TV in SD. Damn, I need a better set-up.

Can anybody who has this comment on the file size for recorded shows. Would be interested to know how my 120gb Slim will cope.

Yeh that sounds about right, I basically upgraded my hard drive for Play TV, it takes up huge amounts of space, its no different to how much space a media centre pc uses though.

Here are some examples of recordings on my PS3 and how much space they take:

Thank God Your Here (Seven SD) 1 hour standard def 3.0 GB
Packed To The Rafters (Seven HD) 1 hour high def 6.3 GB
Good game (ABC 2) 0.5 hours standard def 1.1 GB
The Recruits (Ten) 0.5 hours standard def 1.2 GB
Border Security (Seven) 1 hour standard def 2.8GB
Family Guy (Seven) 0.5 hours standard def 1.4 GB
Reality Undercover (Seven HD) 1 hour 7.0 GB
WWE Afterburn (Nine) 1 hour standard def 3.0 GB
Bad Boys movie (Nine) 2 hours standard def 5.3 GB
.

So..uhh. Alright..assuming you're willing to delete some videos at some point or another icon_wink.gif

And I'm kind of in the same situation as you. My room has my ps3 in it hooked up to a hd monitor, trying to figure out if its worth it to buy a splitter and a long as cable to get the connection from the lounge to my room. (Which I'm sure to god someone will trip over at one point or another).

Its either that, or go get a portable antenna.

So what's the advantage of PlayTV over a normal TV Tuner for your PC?

I got a HD one from HN for $50 earlier in the year and it works great and I can record etc.

Essentially nothing. It should also be pointed out that playTv can be used on pc with custom drivers.

*edit*

Well I suppose the real advantage would be time.

i.e Time used to boot up your computer, start up your viewing program etc etc.
Then of course shutdown times. I suppose it wouldn't be an issue for people who leave their comps on 24/7.

As opposed to the ps3 + playTV, turn on the ps3, takes a few seconds and bang. Ready to go. Turning it off only takes a few seconds too.

Its more aimed at people who have a ps3 in the lounge, while most people will already have a hd set top box, a majority don't have the ability to record in HD/SD.

I ended up grabbing one from BigW last night.

I think its great. Cheap way to get a DVR (assuming you already own a PS3) for $150 it does most of the things I want it to.

I just need to grab a antenna splitter so I can watch TV normally as well as through Play TV.
