Get to know character's cross up moves, the animations and how far they can jump. That way when you see or hear a certain attack you know they are going for a cross-up so you block opposite to normal.
Most characters only have ONE move that you need to look out for but some have multiple moves that cross up (eg Bison has at least 3 and they are all so friggin ambiguous) some have none eg Balrog and Dhalsim (well sim has one but it's useless and no one ever uses it).

Leon has good advice, almost every character has a "escape" move that works against crossups, something that moves you away or hits above and behind you. Sometimes you'll need to use the EX version to get enough speed or invincibility to guarantee your escape. _________________ Playing: 30sec Hero, Scribblenauts, Dungeon Crawl

True BUT for improving your game it is best that you recognise where your opponent jumps and learn to block the correct way.
You can escape by doing the EX moves etc but if you are wide open for punishment.
Case in point: Ken vs Ryu. Ken scores an untechable knockdown via heavy sweep. Ken goes for a cross-up mk jumpin. Ryu players mashes out EX dragon punch which causes him to escape the crossup attempt. Ken player has landed and will punish Ryu on his recovery when he lands. You can substitute Ryu for just about any character in the cast eg. Balrog EX headbutt, Honda EX buttslam, Sagat EX Tiget uppercut etc and the result will be the same. On most crossup attempts these moves will not hit but you have escaped but now wide open for punishment. You have burned EX meter and be hurt more than if you simply block.

Argh, I want Super SFIV NOW. I can't wait till they bring in lobbies so why can have matches together and *learn* from watching.
The community (on 360) is dropping off a bit. It's getting harder to find a game. Took me AGES to find anybody in the Championship final the other day. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Thank's everyone of the help. I've been taking what all of you have been suggesting and maitaining range with Sagat by spamming fireballs or when they are within range, FW>HK into high tiger knee to send them back to the other side of the screen. I went to an arcade at the Crown casino today and played a few skillful randoms. I was suprised at how many cross up attacks I managed to block but with that being said, i still struggle from time to time especially against Chun-Li's one. I've also begun trying to improve in my throws by mostly doing a cross up with Sagat straight into a throw to regain range. Was suprised at how well i did today against some of the guys I fought. Was 5-0 at one stage until I went up against a brilliant El Fuerte user. Could not read or predict any of his attacks, did not know how to block certain attacks and got done by his skill throws several times. What impressed me was how he managed to pull off an EX which absorbed 2 attacks. Insane! _________________

One of the greatest weapon in SF or any fighting game is using a non-popular character. I always get owned by a good Rufus, simply because I still don't understand how his game works. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Good stuff ecks... 5 win streak at the arcades is always a good feeling
Street Fighter is all mind games. What you did with the j.lk into throw is known as a tick throw. Tick throw once or twice and you have trained your opponent to tech your throw so next time you have an opportunity you j.lk straight into tiger uppercut on landing. He will think you are going to throw and eat the uppercut The safe way to play it is wait til you have 2 EX bar j.lk into TU focus cancel dash if it hit immediately f.hk then ultra (if you have it) if he blocked you are completely safe and can TU again or throw.
Add me on XBL for games vindk8 78
And Leon is right, I don't have much of a clue on how to fight Fei Long, Cammy, Viper, Gen or Rufus. Severely underused characters... Rufus especially he is such a good character but maybe its the actual design of him all blubbering around that turns people off. I know I hate looking at him lol.

Does anyone have problems playing SF4 on PSN after 11pm AEST. For some reason I keep on loosing/droping connections. Mornings 9ams works best for me. What could be the problem? Its so damm annoying in final round it drops n I have to start championship again.
I have got TPG ADSL2+ and using Wireless Router N(Billion). Is there any configuration I need to do. I did contacted TPG and according to them its all ok.
When you guys play online, how many bars does it show for yourself and for other players. For me it always show no bar for myself but 1 bar for other player but its a no lag, silky smooth match.
I understand PSN is free may it cannot handle too many people playing at a time. How about Xbox live, since its paid is that any better? _________________ Play-Asia Affiliate Link For Gaming Bargain

Location of Telephone Jack and Ps3 is 10 meteres away, using ethernet that long is it viable. I had similar setting 5 months ago but it was no different, i did had few drops time to time. _________________ Play-Asia Affiliate Link For Gaming Bargain

You wont lose any signal over that length if wired correctly.
I have my Xbox 360 connected via ethernet for which I have a wall plate in my computer room and in the lounge and a 10m or so cable running through the roof of my house.
Wired is much better than wireless when it comes to gaming in my opinion. _________________

How about just connecting a 10 m ethernet cable from router to PS3. Previously I had setting of connecting landline cable(10m) from wall socket to router which I kept near PS3 and then connected 1m ethernet from router to PS3. But had few drop outs. Is anyone using TPG ADSL2+??? Anyone experiencing similar problem? _________________ Play-Asia Affiliate Link For Gaming Bargain

Check your firewall. I have been through the weekend of hell with the PS3 trying to get Uncharted 2 working (kept dropping out after radom minutes of play). It ended up being a silent modem setting that wasn't working with the PS3 at all (360 had no problems though).
I use wireless for my 360 and SFIV and don't have any problems at all for lag or drop outs. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I thought mine was too, or so I though. I ended up trolling google until I found a Aussie post where there was a 'secret' setting which had a firewall enable (this is a Optus branded Netgear Cable modem). I disabled that and my PS3 has been stable ever since. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Got, gotta say, I'm definitely a bit rusty ain't I Deli.
I've managed to spend the three minutes* required on single player to finally unlock Cammy though, who's certainly much much different from her SFA3 and CvS2 self, but I'm digging her quite a bit.
Spiral Arrow/ Cannon Drill is deadly against projectile happy folk at medium range, and I'm still getting to grips with the exact nature of the almighty Cannon Spike/ Thrust Kick, but it's been working wonders against Dictators worldwide. Bummer about Spin Knuckle being the slowest armor breaker in history, but it's nice to have a healthy amount of evading in the game (Spiral Arrow inclusive!). Now just to master the baiting to Hooligan Throw...
