The 4.2 update is out. Wii owners are advised to not update. This is not just for homebrewers, but all Wii owners.

Quote:
System Menu 4.2 seems to be bricking non-HBCed Wiis. It doesn't matter whether you've ever installed the Homebrew Channel or hacked your Wii, people who have never even heard of HBC are having these issues.

The problem appears to lie with an incredibly shoddily programmed update to boot2 of the Wii. boot2 is basically the area that "starts up" the Wii. According to the people who have developed HBC, the code for Nintendo's updated boot2 is prone to making write errors, therefore making the possibility of bricking your Wii extremely high, whether or not you have ever hacked or modified your Wii.

For this reason I've made this announcement, because it affects everyone who owns a Wii, not just people who like to fool around with modifying their hardware.

If you would like to discuss the issue on the forums, the Wii Homebrew thread is a good place to ask questions.

Note: If you have already successfully updated to System Menu 4.2, your Wii is safe. The danger is only during the updating process.

Source

If you have already updated and it worked you should be fine, as the problem appears to be in the actual updating process. Those who have not updated yet are advised to keep their Wii's at System Menu 4.1.

If this problem is as serious as it sounds I request that a PALGN newsie post this so readers can get a heads-up.

I should state that it's unlikely your Wii will brick, but it is possible.

Oh boy, you nearly had me panicking before I finished reading the post. I updated my Wii last night. I was thinking when I read the start of the post, I need to get rid of the darn update or it'll break my Wii lol. It updated with no problems last night.

Sounds like it's not really wide spread, not too much to worry about. Probably people updating with slow net connections or stopping it while it is updating. Updating consoles/PCs is always risky if they didn't do something right but it's a risk you have to take if you want to keep up to date.

Updating firmwire on anything always has a chance of making said console brick. I guess I survived it though. PHEW.

Don't panic, it's not a REAL high chance. I'm just saying.

Great, now I'm crapping myself about updating my console just in the off chance that it will brick and I'll lose all my saves.

If you lose power, or the upgrade is interrupted for whatever reason, you can end up with a half-updated firmware. That more than likely won't allow your device to boot, unless it's got a second firmware chip onboard. I have not heard of the Wii having such a backup though.

There's no real incentive to upgrade to 4.2 anyway, it just "improves performance" for some unstated functionality.

And removes Homebrew. That's its main feature. I regret updating.

A vast majority of firmware updates with the Wii are extremely safe, it's really just this one that is a risk. Nintendo, for whatever reason, has decided to re-write the boot2 sector of the Wii's firmware, which is a high risk update as it can become corrupt and...well, there goes your ability to boot the Wii.

If you've already installed it and can get into the main menu then everything is fine. If you haven't installed it I'd recommend against doing so simply because this update is entirely targetted towards killing homebrew, and thus if you dont have homebrew its not worth the risk.

Just wait for Nintendo to address the issue...if they do so.

I wish that was the case Jess. Nintendo is furiously deleting any and all posts in their forums of people getting bricked. Here's one retrieved from the crapper:

http://static.hackmii.com/nintybrickfail.png

In an attempt to target the minority of people using homebrew (in addition to some really pathetic coding), they have inadvertently stepped on the feet of the rest of their install base; most of whom have no idea what homebrew even is.

Rumours are that Nintendo will be accepting bricked Wiis to be repaired for free on the condition tha they find no trace of anything Homebrew related.

I really cant believe they did this. Their OS is craptacular anyway, and then they went and played with the most error-prone part, specifically to take down homebrewers. Ironically, most homebrewers will be warned beforehand and not update or wait for a workaround, while those who dont homebrew are at the same risk of a bricking that homebrewers are without actually getting any benifit from the update anyway.

Very poor form Nintendo.

ok, after reading all these posts, let me get this straight (i'm a bit slow..)

if i update to my wii with the hbc channel to 4.2 there is a chance it can be bricked?
and if it doesn't get bricked, theres a gurantee the homebrew channel will be completely wiped and/or useless?

If you update to 4.2 the older HBC will be wiped, however the latest version of the HBC I think manages to survive the update. It was released only yesterday or something.

4.2's primary (and only) objective is to kill homebrew. It blocks a bunch of the custom IOSs people use to pirate and run the USB loader too, although I'm unsure if any fix is available for that yet (I assume not).

The risk of the update itself has nothing to do with whether or not you have any homebrew. It's the method Nintendo have used for the update. This particuarly firmware update touches a very iffy sector of the Wii's OS programming, specifically part that has to do with booting up the Wii.

If the firmware update screws up, which it can, then your Wii will fail to boot and/or operate incorrectly, rendering it useless. This risk is equal for people who do use homebrew and those who dont, as it's not any actualy 'homebrew' thats causing the bricking.

The advice is not to update. If you have no homebrew you're not going to get anything out of the 4.2 update, as the update is specifically to kill homebrew. If you have homebrew, dont update until all avenues of homebrew development have work arounds, as per usual with all updates. Either way, the risk of bricking is equal, thus encouraging people of all shapes and sizes to avoid updating.

The real kick to the nads is that Nintendo is blocking access to the Wii Shop channel unless you have the latest update, which is why I updated, which is why I lost my Homebrew Channel icon_evil.gif

@ tootie_kicks - you've done the hard part and survived the upgrade.

Next, all you need to do is download the latest HackMii Installer (this will install BootMii, DVDX and Homebrew Channel for you) and get it to run using Indiana Pwns. If you don't have a copy of Lego Indiana Jones onhand, use the latest Bannerbomb instead. These methods replace the Twilight Hack as that won't work past Wii firmware versions higher than 3.4.

My Wii is one of the fallen. icon_sad.gif I took the shot, anything but net.
Although that whole "free repair" thing almost makes up for it, considering I didn't have homebrew.

I'm sorry to hear that.
It's ironic that the people with Homebrew seem to survive it and the people without suffer. What are you thinking Nintendo?

Hackmii.com is actually bloody brilliant for knowing about every nintendo firmware update. all homebrew users have to routinely refer to it and get the know on each update in order to safely and successfully keep using their stuff, while if you weren't using it you wouldn't bother, thus as eatchildren was saying this will sadly and ironically hurt innocent casual gamers far worse than the homebrew or pirate community in any way.

goddamn. ninty, wtf bbq mate?..

I read the update email on the Wii, but I couldn't be bothered to download it, so I just turned it off.

I guess being Lazy pays off sometimes.

www.gbatemp.net or is it .org, whatever, they have a fix up in the forums (a safe update to 4,2 that works and leaves your current setup, however it is, alone)

check it.
