Saving Private Ryan. Ultimate.
Others include: Band of Brothers, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, Inglorious Basterds, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter.
If you want a good current war film, check out The Hurt Locker. _________________

Saving Private Ryan is really the only one I can think of, and it's an excellent movie.

Zulu is brilliant. Old, but brilliant. And a true story.
100% on RottenTomatoes.com can't be a bad thing.

After slogging through El Tacos list, watch Tropic Thunder (and if you already have, watch it again). You'll get a lot more out of it. _________________

It's more recent, but watch Jarhead, it's amazing. Great soundtrack as well. _________________

On the vein of Jarhead (well that conflict anyway) Three Kings is a good movie too, although more of a drama with a bit of comedy, definitely not as dark as Jarhead. _________________

Everything I would've recommended is already suggested besides The Brotherhood of War. Korean made movie set during the Korean War, similar to Saving Private Ryan. _________________

Band of Brothers is a god amongst war flicks.
this series is well worth every hour of your life watching it.
They did everything right, their research, interviews with vets, made it personal, historically accurate and still riveting/entertaining to watch. _________________

Starship Troopers - this is really a WW2 film set in space.
Tae Guk Gi - Korean war. Very emotional film.
The Great Escape
War and Peace - USSR version. Some epic battles. 1812 war.
Platoon
plenty of others which I can't think of. _________________

No one's mentioned Tora! Tora! Tora! either.
Or Hamburger Hill.
Or Apocalypse Now.
Or M*A*S*H.
While I'm here, I've never seen Patton either. _________________

I love Platoon but the best war scene goes to the city battle in Children of Men. The single shot technique makes it far more realistic.

I second Das Boot. It follows from a German's perspective, showing them as humans, not those bloodthirsty Nazis that movies often portray them as. _________________

Flags of our Fathers and, especially, Letters from Iwo Jima are amazing. Definitely a companion piece, but each stands alone without the other just fine.
