ive been looking for some good movies as of late but cant seem to find some solid opinions.

War movies based on WW1,WW2 and Vietnam tickle my fancy so any recomendations send my way.

Oh, and i like action icon_razz.gif

Saving Private Ryan. Ultimate.

Others include: Band of Brothers, Platoon, We Were Soldiers, Inglorious Basterds, Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter.

If you want a good current war film, check out The Hurt Locker.

Saving Private Ryan is really the only one I can think of, and it's an excellent movie.

Zulu is brilliant. Old, but brilliant. And a true story.

100% on RottenTomatoes.com can't be a bad thing.

After slogging through El Tacos list, watch Tropic Thunder (and if you already have, watch it again). You'll get a lot more out of it.

It's more recent, but watch Jarhead, it's amazing. Great soundtrack as well.

On the vein of Jarhead (well that conflict anyway) Three Kings is a good movie too, although more of a drama with a bit of comedy, definitely not as dark as Jarhead.

Everything I would've recommended is already suggested besides The Brotherhood of War. Korean made movie set during the Korean War, similar to Saving Private Ryan.

Band of Brothers is a god amongst war flicks.

this series is well worth every hour of your life watching it.

They did everything right, their research, interviews with vets, made it personal, historically accurate and still riveting/entertaining to watch.

Starship Troopers - this is really a WW2 film set in space.
Tae Guk Gi - Korean war. Very emotional film.
The Great Escape
War and Peace - USSR version. Some epic battles. 1812 war.
Platoon

plenty of others which I can't think of.

No one's mentioned Tora! Tora! Tora! either.

Or Hamburger Hill.

Or Apocalypse Now.

Or M*A*S*H.

While I'm here, I've never seen Patton either.

Just watch Full Metal Jacket, it is still the ultimate war movie that othrs like Jarhead are still trying to imitate today.

I love Platoon but the best war scene goes to the city battle in Children of Men. The single shot technique makes it far more realistic.

I am horrified at the lack of the following in this thread (complete with a quick review of 10 words or less):

The Thin Red Line (WW2, Guadalcanal)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120863/
War-as-poetry

Das Boot (WW2, German U-Boat)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082096/
'The Other Side', built entirely on tension

The Longest Day (WW2, Normandy)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056197/
Ensemble cast, varying character perspectives

Generation Kill (Iraq, 2003)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0995832/
Exemplary 'downtime' and cynicism during war

Blackhawk Down (Somalia, 1993)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265086/
Finest example of war-movie-as-action-film

I second Das Boot. It follows from a German's perspective, showing them as humans, not those bloodthirsty Nazis that movies often portray them as.

Flags of our Fathers and, especially, Letters from Iwo Jima are amazing. Definitely a companion piece, but each stands alone without the other just fine.
