I'm really not happy with it after spending more time with it. I really liked to where they got with the old XMB. It was functional yet basic. It feels so cluttered and FAT now. The only good thing have done is the 'sparkle' background.
The new friends list is a giant step back. It's almost laughable bad. Can I have an option to revert to back? I tried to find an option for this but alas. The old system was fine.
The didn't address my big pet hate which was the in-game XMB. It should be minimal and show you what you really only need mid-game, not a full blown XMB. Also not be as slow and chunky.
I HATE the "what's new" linking to a webpage. I really don't like that. If I'm on a console I don't want to be linked to a webpage and have to navigate it with my controller and zoom in on text and images. Are they too lazy to create content? Maybe they should pop over onto the 360's dash and check out how they did it. Total fail.
They need an option to disable the Store from the game page. It's useless anyway as it just launches into the store on the default page. I really don't like it defaulting over the disc

Like NXE, this change was unnecessary and hasn't added anything to the experience, only altered it. Why they waste their time with this rather than contributing to other areas *cough* BC *cough* is beyond me. _________________

So turn off the What's New on startup in the settings. At least they provided that option 8\ _________________

I wouldn't mind the update too much if everything went smaller again like it used to be. They should have an option to make everything smaller again!
It's like I've gone from 1080i to 480i! |
Why were you on 1080i in the first place? @_@ |
Well I have exaggerated of course! But the text really does feel very 'in your face' now. It's easily the worst thing about the update.
I'm eager to see these animated backgrounds - Yet not eager enough to create a Japanese account. Hopefully they'll put one on the AU store tomorrow. _________________

| Joystiq wrote: | Firmware 3.00 blamed for malfunctioning PS3 controllers
A growing thread on the official PlayStation 3 forum alleges the recent hardware firmware upgrade to version 3.00 has spawned a host of controller connection issues for PS3 users. According to the forum, various wireless controllers -- some users specifically naming DualShock3 model CECHZC2H (Ceramic White) -- are unable to connect to the console. When turned on, users claim the controller LEDs for ports 1 and 2 are activate, but the controller remains inoperable.
Users attempting to troubleshoot the problem claim that resetting the controller (through the built-in pinhole reset function) and plugging it directly into the console (via USB) do not correct the error, with one user going so far as doing a complete system restore to no avail. The issue, however, appears to be isolated, but is still a concern for a number of gamers.
Joystiq has contacted Sony for comment on the alleged malfunction. |
I can confirm this is legit, because my mate's DS3 has this problem.
We thought the controller might be dodgy because he just got it, but looks like it is just a firmware problem. _________________

The difference is, the NXE was an improvement. Not nearly as many people were dissatisfied with that as PS 3.0
As for BC... it's just not going to happen. Sony are taking a loss on the machine, and all the while REMOVING stuff and making it cheaper. They're not going to invest in building an emulator for PS2 games. It would take too much time and too much money and not enough people care (I *do* care, but thats irrelevant). In the ten years since the PS2 came out there still is not a single reverse engineered emulator that can run games at a playable speed, the technology just is not compatible. Sony are not leprechauns - they wouldn't have any easier a time developing one than anyone else.
More importantly, they can get away with not doing it. They've set a trend. The 360 plays all of 60 XBOX games and most of them not that well and the list has not been increased in three or more years. The DSi doesn't play GBA games anymore. Nintendo says its because it wouldn't fit with the stylus. So why didn't they just move the stylus? Hmm...
This is just the way the industry has decided to go. _________________

*cough*PCSX2*cough
As for the firmware update, I'm fine with it. I have no issues with the text or friends list, and the added sparkle in the background is cool. It's too bad we haven't been given an animated theme to use, but then they're charging money ($3 USD) for the LBP one anyway. I refuse to pay money for a theme, no matter how good it is. _________________

It's not a deal breaker the new update, but it is dissapointing. You'd think with 3.0 it would have done brought in some features we were really looking for. _________________ Shin J Leon.

^ yeah...I really don't see what's there for this to be considered a 'major' release...
I suppose there's been some prep work for the video store coming to europe there and other behind the scenes stuff...but they need to make the 'big' ones have some decent stuff we see now too. _________________

Played some Tekken today.
Can't believe how much I missed the little 'Playstation 3' text and cool sound upon startup.
What WERE they thinking??? _________________

My black DS3s are fine, they're saying it's just Ceramic White ones.
Updating isn't optional if you ever intend on going online, sadly. I'm sure Uncharted will get a fix soon, and by soon I mean not soon enough. _________________

It also says that the problem is with the American Ceramic White DS3s with the model number CECHZC2H.
The Japanese model number for Ceramic Whites are CECHZC2J, which don't seem effected. (as I've got one) _________________

I can confirm the above, I have a CECHZC2J and it worked fine last night.
Also I noticed a small update for COD 4 last night , but I hadn't been online for a few days. _________________

Okay, I would like people's opinion on something.
When you first start up the PS3 and you're on the login screen, does the background move if you jolt the controller? This question has bugged me for a while now.
Either I'm just a nutcase (a real possibility, lol), or my belief that the background is SLIGHTLY affected by the SIXAXIS movement. I mean slightly too! I was playing around for a good few minutes last night trying to work out if my jolting of the SIXAXIS moved the background. I could have sworn it did! _________________

It does. The glitter seams to follow the classic wavy lines unless you jolt it and then they come forward more. I'm positive I've done it too. _________________

I've also noticed that the pinky/purple background changes colour to a dark blue/black late at night (maybe something like after midnight). The swirls are still pinky/purple though.
This has happened to me the last two evenings.. _________________

Umm the XMB has always changed colour throughout the day, since launch. Each month the background changes to a completely dif colour and throughout each day it goes brighter and then darker depending on the hour... No change there, except that a little colour is retained even in the middle of the night. _________________
