Already called Sony, $250 for a repair.

I have a 60gb Launch model PS3 that just got the Yellow Light Of Death after about an hour of Street Fighter 4, whacked in Burnout, turned it off, when back flashing red light, turned it on and beep beep beep, yellow light of death. No game eject.

1. Can I get my game out?
2. Is there a way around this, being out of warranty anyway?
3. Implied warranty with receipt from Kmart?
4. Stuff it and get a slim............? Anyone buy broken 60GB launch PS3s (BC model for Ps2) on ebay or here?

Help! This has reallly shocked me to the core.

I think section 4 is the best bet

Even if you had an extended warranty sony wont guarntee that you will get a 60gb model back.

My PS3 (40GB) got the YLOD with MGS4 stuck in it. This is how I got it out:

-Turn the switch on the back to the off position
-Put your finger on the eject button (and keep it there)
-Turn the switch to the on position (while your finger is still on the eject)
-Your PS3 should make a loud fan blowing noise and your disc should pop out

Hrm, they only dropped the repair price by $50. Sony you jerks.

He will get an option if he makes a claim. He can get an 80 gig or 60 gig. I had the option to get a 60 gig BC model back (which was mine repaired) but I took the 80 gig cause I don't really have any use for PS2 games.

PS3 60 gig'ers are seriously is as unreliable as the 360s. I know so many people they have them fail.

You're screwed in terms of getting it fixed for free. You could try and get it fixed privately (google search), but you are going to be out of pocket regardless (at least $200).

But because it's a 60 gig version, you might be able to sell it broke at a decent price and make some money and buy a slim. That's probably your best option.

I think there is a FAQ on the Sony website for getting out jammed discs.

only problem is that particular process doesnt work on the 60gb model
if you do end up going with sony, it does say on the letter they email to you to fill out, is there a game stuck in the machine. so that shouldnt be a problem, also tell them its stuck in there.
cant really help with anything else sorry

my 60gb has never skipped a beat.

-anyway i'd pay the $250 get it repaired, then just keep it, or sell then sell it on ebay... they are still worth heaps so I'd say keep its value.

So when repaired is it actually repaired and sent back (same 60gb backwards Compatible model) or do they replace it? Or, is there an option?

BTW thanks for all the advice. Appreciated.

How long ago was it. As my mates died about 3 months ago and sony specifically told him that they could not guarantee a 60gb model back.

Just gonna pay Sony the money. Hope for the best, hope I get my game back or they are dead.

Do you send the HDD with it? Or minus cables/HDDcontroller etc? Have to have retail box? Receipt?

Your game should be fine. BurnZ in the other Yellow Light topic had to call up Sony to get his game back though, so be prepared.

Your HDD will be reformatted (but you still need to send the original one, I think).

But yeah, if you really want to burn time and read about the Yellow Light of Death from other forumer, you can read about BurnZ's experience here, The Yellow Light

Don't send it in with the cables.

I made THAT mistake before...but they were good enough to send me the power cable out anyway. icon_smile.gif

Didn't Sony email you with the instructions? It should have a separate form for the 'stuck game'.

Backup your HDD. I did that and it retained a lot of my saved games (not all for some reason).

Take it out and plug it into a PC? Cant back up to USB as I cant get to XMB.
I havent got the cash to pay them $250 right now so they said call back when I do, which wont be for a few weeks. As long as its before ratchet and clank and uncharted 2 Im all good.

odd, i've never had any problems with my 60gig model and neither has any of my friends who i purchased with on release.

if your not too bothered about wanting BC i might consider selling it and using it to put towards a slim.

I am going to sell it when it gets back and use the cash to pay for the repair and fund a slim. If they send me a new one looks like I can sell it for enough to pull that off.

Update: Payed for and sent the console today, there was a slip on the PDF with a check box with "Do you have a game stuck in the console" and a line to describe what game it is. They also note it may take up to two weeks longer than the return ofyour console to get your game in the mail should you receive a replacement unit.

I specified a 60gb launch model replacement/repair and they said no problems, also, if I call on por after September third they will and can replace it with a slim 120gn unit.

Though as said before will probably sell to cover repair costs and pay for a slim. Looking for over $750 with a few decent games included, reckon thats possible?

If they can replace with a slim and it costs 250 for repair wouldn't it be better for them to give you the slim?

Not really, if the solution is PS3 Yellow Light of Death Fix (posted by dloiscute in the Yellow Light thread). Then it will be quite cheap to fix.

This seems to be a common way to self-fix a yellow light problem... I wouldn't know myself because I rather want an expert to do it.

I did read somewhere in the internet that most likely a Yellow Light can be caused from CPU overheading and the thermal paste is wearing off.

i would be tempted to stay with the old one after what i just seen on youtube.
a new slim with ylod already. apparently a few have been returned with the same problem already.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjqdU6JD2TE

EDIT. may be fake (some saying by pushing the button twice or some crap like that makes it do it (sony fanboys defending it of course)), i dont know, but atleast you have a couple of weeks to see if it is a big problem or not, before you get your 60gb back.

Was on the phone to Sony today, there quite happy once they receive my unit to send me out a slim with no delay and return my stuck game later. Pretty cool I thought, going to think about it and take a look around at what they sell for on ebay mate of mine just sold his (upon hearing about mine) for $1050au..... are people really THAT keen for PS2 compatibility? Or is it the USB ports, SD card reader etc?
