Haven't downloaded it yet, but when I do I am praying they have sneakily added a 50HZ option for 1080i, because then I can finally play the damn games at a decent resolution on that 47" Rear Projection TV I've got, the picture quality on the thing is better then an LCD, but the damn PS3 won't output it at 50HZ! _________________

Have another read through some of the posts Mike.
You can get a free Afrika theme from the Japan store. _________________

You're jumping the gun a tad early.
The firmware hasn't even been out for 12 hours yet.
These new themes seem abit complex, so they might only be made by Sony and 3rd party companies. _________________

After downloading the new update I'm quiet liking it.
The corner info display is a good addition, with the total number of friends online might be a good idea to be able to promote friends so they are represented by a seperate symbol. The clock is pretty neat I'm liking how it doubles as a loading animation.
The trophies i'm finding load faster, and also the friends list. I'm not too sure why they added them all in grey boxes, feel that they might plan to put more info in them as they progress.
the fairy dust is quiet cool, i spent a minute or two just watching it.. oddly enough.
I was hoping they would have added more visuals in the music player but only seem to have two... didn't we used to have more before? _________________

Not sure if this is what you mean by other themes...but I've downloaded a few from http://www.allps3themes.com/
My old theme (I use the icons only, because yes - I like the fairy dust) seems to be working fine with the new update.
I've also read this from a website a few weeks ago - can anyone with a Bravia confirm? I didn't see it in the update notes...
BRAVIA(R) Sync(TM) Feature -By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include “System Standby” that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off(*4).

does the PS3 have a feature to hide the HUD?
like the PS2 fats, if you put it on that crystal clock, you could press a button that removed all the HUD so it was just the crystal clock on the screen.
with animated themes, the PS3 is screaming for that feature - if it doesn't have it already.
(and while we're at it - bring back the crystal clock.) _________________

I think this is the most piece of shit update yet. They seem to have gone out of their way to turn the sleek, minimalist XMB of the good old days into the most clunky and visually-offensive spectacle of boxes and shading you've ever seen. Bigger font? Grey friend boxes? Intrusive top-right bar-of-no-wonders? Fuck you Sony. _________________

Yes, and the softness of the 3.0 XMB indicates to me the system is running it at its original size in the background and simply zooming in on it, yet there is no way to go back to the old size. -_-

This has nothing to do with Sony, but it *is* coming. DivX are releasing an update for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the next few months which will support HD MKV. _________________

Oh dear. The friend's list is an abomination. Not only does it look like it was designed by a high school student with ugly grey boxes, when you scroll it flickers at the bottom! It's so nasty.
Overall I don't think it's better. There is crap everywhere now, I don't like the store in each section, and like Gtpod said, I prefer the minimalist XMB they had before. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I'm glad I'm not the only one round here who thinks the pixie dust is cool!
I wouldn't mind the update too much if everything went smaller again like it used to be. They should have an option to make everything smaller again!
It's like I've gone from 1080i to 480i! _________________

While I too don't like the look of what they've done to the friends list, when you have the Afrika theme on, you can see why they've done it.
With that theme you really struggle to see anything at all on the xmb, so the grey background on the friends list at least makes that part readable. _________________

The Afrika theme is awesome! And it's weird, I'm running it in 480P and can read everything perfectly with the theme.

For me, sat on the sofa about 3.5m back, the background has become too busy to easily read the text at times. As the background is animated it does depend what's happening at the time on what you're trying to read, but it looks a bit of a mess to me. Especially when you get parts with the white text on a white background. I imagine this is all behind the increased font size too. _________________

I'm almost certain Sony don't show this to *normal* people as they are designing it. It's like a developer is sitting there and designing it on the fly.
Some of the new features and look of the XMB are a step back. _________________ Shin J Leon.

japanese store, click on the first thing when you get in there (which is latest for us) and look for the afrika icon.
for me im loving the friends list. i had a couple of old themes that were either to bright or they were white so it was impossible to read the names on the list, but now with the grey boxes im loving it no problem reading it now.
so for me thats a plus 1.
also liking the little time box in the top corner, its becoming very handy for when im in a game, and go for a drink or toilet break and seeing it i got any messages while i was away. alot better then scrolling down the friends list while your still trying to play. _________________

Wow... I tried that Afrika theme. I can't even read the XMB text now because of the white clouds behind the white text =\
If they removed the out of place boxes behind the friends list items and the extra PlayStation Store shortcuts I'd be happy with the update. _________________

Giant text and ugly grey boxes aside, that clock fix is a heaven-send. Animated themes is a pretty nice bonus too altough it'd take a lot for me to actually pay money for one. That Afrika theme will suit me fine for now although there's only so much Zebra arse you can take before things start to get weird...
But yeah, the XMB has unfortunately been beaten with an ugly stick. _________________
