As for the question about ginger beer exploding once bottle - i just use softdrink bottles to bottle it in, use only 1 teaspoon of sugar per bottle, otherwise it will explode |
So are you able to make the spirits taste like other stuff other then Rum? Sorry for the silly questions but you have opened my brain to the whole idea and I am curious to know more..
Also what does your setup that you use look like to make your hooch? |
You can make the spirit taste like, what ever you wish, you buy the essence from the brew shop - 50ml essence cost approx $10 which will flavour 5litre of spirit
I will take a photo tomorrow for you of the still

okay here is the pics of my still setup, it is approx 1.5m x 2 inch copper pipe, which makes a great reflux length with a coil inside the copper pipe, i use a 4 ring gas burner to heat the 50 litre keg, i use a shroud around the burner and keg to help control the heat, it takes 2 x 25litre washes at the cost of about $30, the process of stilling the alchol takes about 4hr from start to finish, producing about 20 - 25 litre of spirit diluted to 40%
the thermometer is so i can control the temp - the best running temperature is between 85 - 95 degrees
temperature is controlled by circulating water between the coil and the 2inch copper pipe
i can get 4 stills processed out of a 9kg gas bottle
a wash of 25litres consist of 8kg sugar, yeast and water - takes usually 5 days to ferment the sugar out
you wont find this still in the shop , the cost to make the still was about $200 worth of copper and fittings

have you checked the legalities of such a setup in whatever state you're in?
or did you have to do anything special to get that setup?
as i mentioned before, in WA at least, it's legal to sell still products up to a 5L capacity, anything larger requires a commercial license, but even the 5L stills are illegal to use without a license or registration with police. _________________

Great setup, though it looks a little bigger than 5 litres
How do you avoid methanol poisoning when making spirits? _________________ http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997175012

in qld you can purchase a 25litre still from the home brew shops, i did start with one of them and then i got this design from the internet and built it myself, it is a 50litre beer keg
it is only the first 50ml which comes out of the still which is methanol, just throw that bit out and it is fine after that
But then by law all stills are purchased for distilling water or perfume, not for making of alcohol, lol

You like melt the chocolate and let the Vodka like blend in with it or something _________________

Going to have a few bottles when the boys come over this saturday night, as well as some beef jerky the I am drying this afternoon. There is a strange satisfaction in being able to homecook/brew all your unhealthy foods, I only hope they taste alright. _________________ http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997175012

Finally, all the pieces are in place. I have my keg system complete and am trying to learn how to properly gas my lines without making it spew out foam and poor quality beer (though I imagine poor quality beer will be part of the equation for a while yet).
Point is I finally have a keg system going. Give me a few weeks and I will have cheap reliable beer on tap at home. Anyone who wants to drop round for a brewski next weekend is more than welcome. _________________ http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997175012

this is what i do - hook te gas up to the keg and fully open the regulator and leave it open fo about 15 minutes and then shut the gas bottle down and refrigerate the beer and it will absorb the gas as it cools down, otherwise just use sugar to gas the keg, the same way you do on tallies, and let it sit for a couple of weeks before you put it in the fridge to get it cold and then you only need to turn the gas on to get pouring pressure from the keg

Thanks for the tip
I have also read you can cool the keg overnight with the gas at about 200kpa and it will gas as it sits. Will this lead to overcarbonation? _________________ http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197997175012

yes it will over carbonate if left charged overnight, the best way is to sugar the keg and then let it sit for a couple of weeks, then just use gas to pour the beer
I found the spear in the keg is best to cut about 1/2'' of the end, so it does not go right to the bottom of the keg, that way you dont get the merky beer the same either

Sorry to bump an old thread.
Recently I've gotten into homebrewing, and I was after a few tips.
1. What's the best way to go about sterilising? Currently I have to use detergent then some special sanitise solution, but it's really tedious especially cleaning out all the bottles.
2. Would it matter much if I used CLEAN hands to put my carbonation drops in the bottles? I did and I'm hoping that wasn't a mistake.
3. I'm thinking of getting into brewing spirits if I go alright with beer (and cider, etc.). How much do stills cost? My local store said they're anywhere from $800 to $1200. Is the extra price just for larger ones? _________________

Ah as if you're using a kit still, myself and a mate are currently in the planning process of making a still from copper piping, the right size to just put it on the stove. _________________

Dad has brewed his own beer for as long as i can remember and for as long as I can remember I have helped him do it.
1) To steralise bottles, we just wash the empty bottle with hot soapy water and rinse it out by filling it up with clean water and letting it overflow until there are no bubbles left in the bottle, this is important if you dont want a soapy beer. The bottle then goes into storage until we have enough for another batch. On bottling day we just rise them out with hot water to steralise.
2) The carbonation drops are just sugar (more or less) so it doesnt really matter how you get them in there, as long as its in there it will do its job.
3) My girlfriends dad brews his own spirits, its a bit more involved than beer and it can get pretty smelly during the fermentation but the end result is pretty good. Though I'm not sure how much the equipment costs unfortunatly. _________________

Thanks, will try that, sounds a lot faster than the method I was using. Oh but fyi I'm using plastic bottles, but don't think that'll make a difference. And speaking of bottles, any cheap places I can get them? Currently I'm paying almost $1 for a bottle, which seems like a bit of a rip for a bit of brown plastic. _________________

Just make sure you dont use water hot enough to melt plastic, otherwise you'll be fine. You might be able to get some bottles from soft drinks, I know buderim put their ginger beer in identical brown plastic bottles. Stricktly speaking it's not cheaper but if you were buying softdrink anyway.
We use glass longnecks which we take from the local recycling centre ($0) when we notice them. We have also used stubbies which are good for taking to BBQ's or whatever (or if you just prefer to drink out of a bottle) but you need to make sure you adjust the sugar/carbonating drops accordingly. _________________
