I cringe at the thought of what complete and utter garbage a 2Day FM or Nova Hottest 100 would drag out.

the list was indeed pretty sweet. it was kind of disappointing to see a way-too-familiar top 10, but hey, the people have spoken.

huge props to anyone who voted for Massive Attack's Tear Drop. such an awesome song which i completely forgot about, and it landed in at #22!! well done australia.

Looking at the list, there's a lot of stuff I listened to ages ago, yet due to only ever listening to them on the radio at the time, I've since forgotten.

Just wish there was an actual top 100 release on disc, instead going to have to hunt down the albums / singles I want to listen to again.

And well, I just see it as list of 100 songs that are popular, and haven't really bothered to consider the individual rankings.

An interesting oversight observed by some people and writers: Notice how there aren't any female artists in the Hottest 100.

I don't think it's that, it came in at #1 the year it came out.

that's not saying much - Pretty Fly for a White Guy was number 1 a few years back too, doesn't mean it's a good song.

i'm not saying people aren't allowed to like it, it's just with most songs deemed to be classics, even if i don't like them, i can understand why they're considered so - Smells Like Teen Spirit? i just don't understand. i'm not big on Nirvana on the whole, but i think there are much better songs in their catalogue, let alone amongst everything else.

@Yuppieville:
i had actually noticed the lack of Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl tends to rank pretty high in these kind of things generally, but no females at all? wow, that's pretty impressive Australia...

what...i thought it was common knowledge that Smells Like Teen Spirit basically encapsulated the disaffection of an entire generation?

heck, if i'd grown up during the 80s, i'd be pissed off too!

yeah, i've read all the hype and review about the song, heck i was born in 1980, so while i was probably marginally younger than the music market of the time, i remember the song when it was new (or newish anyway) - and still don't remember thinking "wow, this is an awesome song" or any of that. i just didn't, and don't, like it. the whole thing - i just don't get it. it's not even a "i don't get grunge" thing either - i really liked Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, and even some Nirvana songs - just not that one - i just didn't get why it exploded like it did.

i should probably stop going on about it - suffice to say, it'd definitely not on my top 100 songs of all time.

Am I the only one kind of miffed at the age of the list? Seriously if you'd done the top 10 a decade ago it would have been the exact same list.

And man Nosebleed section is fantastic and deffintly deserved it's place.

Did people incessantly whine about the 98 one? Because alot of the songs on there would have been really recent, and I know when it really recent songs came up on this one it always seemed weird. Some of those things, especially, just dropped off completely, so perhaps they were voted in to soon.

At least with this year's one, most of the songs had been around for long enough to know they had staying power of sorts.

Staying power is one thing but it just seems that it was a top 10 list as compiled soley by gen xers who think all modern music is crap.

Listening to it on sunday was like "Wow, it's like my older sisters wrote this list"
