If anyone was really into the MechWarrior games back in the day, you'd be pleased to know that the series is making a comeback!

After Microsoft dissolved FASA, Jordan Weisman (a co-founder of FASA) managed to secure the rights to Mechwarrior and with his new company called Smith & Tinkerer and working with Piranha Games have been working on a new MechWarrior game which is giving the series a reboot - no Clans, straight back to the Succession Wars era.

IGN have got a preview up here as well as a trailer and a link to an interview with Jordan Wiseman and Piranha Games president Ross Bullock: http://au.pc.ign.com/articles/100/1002275p1.html

This is going to be awesome!

Freaking sweet. I can't wait to level cities (not intentionally of course) in huge Mech battles. I haven't played Mechwarrior in ages though. I hope they rekindle Mercenaries as well because I loved those games too.

Damn, I used to love playing this game on PC. I'll be keeping my eye on this for sure.

I saw this earlier yesterday on ve3d.com and was a bit sceptical as to the quality of the game due to the new developer. Thank you for pointing out that the dev house is put together by Jordan as it brings some hope that this series can once again reach its former (PC) glory.

The news is totally awesome and I'm looking forward to this more than ANY game now. I just hope one of the co-fathers of Battletech can keep the game on track seeing that the stuff that Piranha Games has released in the past hasn't been stellar.

I'm really glad this is heading back to the cockpit style of the MechWarrior games not the MechAssault 3rd person style. Sure MechAssault was fun, but it just didn't capture the feeling of Battletech as much as MechWarrior did back in the days.

A reboot back to the 3rd Succession Wars is awesome too. No overpowered Clan mechs/tech, and over the top weapons. Just the good old favourites. Okay sure the Timber Wolf/Mad Cat is a great mech, but I just can't put it at the same level of awesomeness that is the Marauder or Warhammer. Even the Phoenix Hawk, Wasp, Stinger. All old school favourites. icon_razz.gif
(actually the Awesome battlemech is my favourite - who couldn't say "no" to 3 PPCs and 80 tons of assault mech goodness.... icon_biggrin.gif)

I'm getting all nostalgic about MW2 (even old school MW1 and the Battletech RPG PC games - The Crescent Hawks Inception, and The Crescent Hawks Revenge).

I've read a ton of the novels back in the days, and I'm really excited about all the little elements that are in the books that weren't able to implemented in the games in the past (like over heating in the cockpit etc).

I really hope Piranha Games doesn't screw this up.

"Reactor online... Sensors online... Weapons online... All systems nominal"

I think this thread should be moved to General Gaming since it's going to be multi platform (PC and 360).

One part of me is squealing in giddy joy, another part of me is then thinking "wait, I sucked hardcore at moving the damned things properly!"

I am much conflicted....

After 2 years of radio silence there's (at this time of posting) some news coming out soon about a new MechWarrior game that is going to be PC Exclusive!

PC Gamer is updating that page in about 2 hours time with new info on the MechWarrior series reboot. Russ Bullock

This image was posted on Bryan Ekman's twitter who works for Piranha Games which is the studio working on the new MechWarrior games:

Russ Bullock, the president of Piranha Games is also posting updates on his twitter feed and will be revealing info on the game as well.

Hopefully this news is going to be awesome!

Edit: Also check out MWOmercs.com for some extra info.

Turns out it's a Free 2 Play model game with persistent online.

Here's an interview w/ Piranha about how MWO came to be. Here's another interview w/ the devs discussing how MWO will advance and use the BattleTech timelines starting from 3049 (as opposed to 3015 when the original trailer was released 2 years ago). The cool thing is that it's got a lot of the BattleTech timeline incorporated into the online - so when the Clans invade for the first time, that will be happening in real time online and you can see it and take part in it. Tech will slowly become available so you can upgrade as tech from the Clans are stolen etc.

Also, here's some concept art:

Not exactly what I was hoping for but I'm still pretty excited for this! They also want to work on a SP campaign at some point so here's hoping that gets made soon too!

^ Wow nice concepts. They could do it like Borderlands to keep that sweet look icon_wink.gif

If they have a decent F2P model that doesn't require spending or break the gameplay with bought items, I can definitely see myself playing it.

yeah that's a pretty interesting concept.

I don't know much about the battletech universe but are we gonna see stuff from MW 2 in this game or is it too early in the time line?

Also holy shit I just checked out the battletech wiki for a list of mechs from mech warrior 2. Fucking Nostalgia bomb.

Also to calm Grims tits.

Ekman also promises that while players will be able to buy items with real money, nobody can buy anything that will confer a tactical advantage. “Anything that would affect or give you a tactical advantage, you can’t purchase with real cash. You have to earn that by playing the game,” he says.

The events of MW2 are from the Clan POV prior to and during their invasion of the Inner Sphere so there's a good chance we will see it. The developers also said in the interview that the first Clan appearance is scheduled for their in-game calendar so you do get to see it. The first half of MW2: Mercenaries probably won't get seen but most definitely the second half could play a role as that was all during the Clan invasion and leading up to the Battle of Tukayyid which is where the Clans were beaten and had to uphold a truce before they could invade again.

So the minute this game goes live, every day that passes in our world, it passes live in the Inner Sphere world. So August 1st 2012 is August 1st, 3049. And so we had a live content stream with a live, evolving universe going on as time progresses. We wanted to set it during that period of time because there’s a lot of change. The Clans come down, they invade, there’s the introduction of new technology. There’s lots of story pieces that are happening, and lots of territory change.

Ok fuck me that's awesome.

To calm my what? =)

I was happy after reading the article. Sounds like they're attempting to do the right thing.

So you talk about upgrading skills, a leveling system, upgrading your Mech, and this is such a tricky area for F2P games. There are all these fears about pay-to-win games, and Mech aficianados, they know the specs on a Mech. They know what the Mech is capable of. How is progression going to work? It’s F2P, but obviously money comes into it somewhere. What does your money buy you?

BE: One of the most important things in any F2P games, in my opinion, is not allowing players to buy skill. The fastest way to destroy your game is to allow your players to buy something that gives them a tactical advantage over an enemy. So we’ve been very careful about what you can purchase and what you need to earn.

Can you get into items and upgrades yet?

BE: You’re going to to be able to purchase, using a variety of different methods, Mechs, Mech pieces, skills – but I’ll be careful with what i mean about skills.

When it comes to the pilot, you’ll be able to train your pilot to fit the role that you like. But you won’t be able to pay real cash for pilot training, for example. That would be through earned experience points or earned in-game cash. So you would actually have to play the game to upgrade your pilot. Anything that would affect or give your a tactical advantage, you can’t purchase with real cash. You have to earn that by playing the game.

So we have a pilot tree, a skill tree. As you level up you can unlock new features and new abilities. So if you want to be a scout, you would get skills related to information technology, or being able to move faster, hide, things like that. If you wanted to be more of an assault person, it would be more related to weapon control and such.
