This is both a great idea and a terrible idea at the same time, much like every other videogame to movie adaptation. The game has a strong following of fans who will jump at the chance to see one of their favorite games become a feature length movie. On the other hand, a lot of the time, a series just doesn't make a good transition from one format to another. Games in particular are a tough source to adapt, since the interactivity of the gaming medium is a large part of its appeal in the first place. After all, watching a guy taking down a giant monster just doesn't have the same appeal that doing it yourself does. But that's how it goes, if it sucks then it sucks, if it's great then it's great, fans have to deal with it no matter the outcome. One thing's for sure though, whatever happens from now on should be interesting to watch. icon_smile.gif

I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film. And despite the game's somewhat "artsy" cred, they're hoping Shadow will be a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy tentpole.

I'm almost certain that they'll utterly destroy it. Add a ton of dialogue, misrepresent the lead character as some kind of Generic Action Hero, remove any of the ambiguity around what he's doing, expand upon the backstory and explain where he got the sword and who the girl is (thus ruining a lot of the mystique) and overall completely miss the point.

The director's made of just as much fail as the script writer they've attached to this, honestly. He's certainly no Kubrick - his previous credits include the Scorpion King. icon_confused.gif

I don't know what's going on at Sony. Why would you hand over such an iconic example of what makes games a unique and powerful emergent artform to people who make a living out of churning out formulaic, lowest-common-denominator films.

If they'd attached a good director with a track record of artistic films and a demonstrable knowledge of the game and what makes it so compelling, I might have had some hope. Instead it seems that Hollywood, fresh from defiling my childhood with shitty big-screen reimagining of my favourite 80s franchises, is now poised to **** one of my favourite games as well.

yep i think its going to be a big old flop, should just keep it as a game, doesnt need to be made into a movie, same with alot of great games, like Uncharted it really doesnt need a movie, neither did Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Mario Bros and the list goes on and on and on.

I notice that even though there's a report like this for practically every game that comes out, mercifully few actually come to fruition. This needs to be one that doesn't.

Am I the only one who thinks this could actually be kind of cool?

Those battles were oh so epic in their own right that, if done well on the big screen with good special effects, could make the movie worth watching.

Those who are worried it will 'wreck' the experience for themselves can just avoid going to see it, perhaps? You have to look at it on the flipside, in that it may actually draw non-gamers (or even better, gamers who avoided SotC because it looked too 'artsy') to play the game, and if the movie is a success, could actually spawn a re-release or a sequel to the game which otherwise may not have happened.

No guarantees either way with this one, but I for one am excited, if only to see just how they tackle it.

I don't think that "fail" even starts to describe it.

If this is an April Fools joke, it's worse taste than War of the Worlds.

Every time a movie like this is announced, a whole species of puppies die. What did humanity do to deserve this?!?

And don't think for a second that this will have anything decent in it. It's simple a symptom of the complete lack of imagination of producers that they can't come out with a new idea, let alone something that actually has a PLOT.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Not Shadow, how dare they even TRY to think of filming it with those people attached.

If only Guillermo Del Toro were to somehow be involved as a director, he's one of the few public figures that has actually played the game and really has an understanding of just why it works.

But no. Just....no.

I am happy with my game, I don't need a damn movie. SOTC was and still is one of the greatest PS2 games, a movie (and sequel) would just ruin it.

If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

I agree with the above poster who said that only Guillermo Del Toro could do this movie justice. I would add that Peter Jackson might also have the chops.

Quite simply, no studio will ever give this the budget or TLC it deserves.

it could've been, before they announced who was writing the screenplay, and Shia LeBeouf.

if this was announced with names like Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson, Matthew Vaughn or Alfonso Cuarón in the same breath, i would've been extremely excited, as i think they've proven themselves with similar natured films in the past.

i think the thing that has me most worried is actually the mention of Shia Lebeouf, as all i can think of is him, speaking dialogue at a million miles an hour, boring the colossi to death...

i'll definitely be keeping an eye out for more news, but right now my hype is set to dread.

EDIT: heh, seems a few others had similar ideas for directors as i did, and i missed them before.

OK a movie definitely isn't needed, but a sequel would be excellent. I'm talking more of a ICO/SOTC connection - in the same world, etc. but a different story.

No! No no no no no!

But wait... it's not by Uwe Boll?
And yet... it might make people want to buy the game?

Probably won't have the emotional impact of the game when you start to feel guilty about killing the collossi, but then talking about emotions makes me sound like a faeg unlike the MANLY MAN which I am.

Well then... a timid yes, perhaps? As long as there are no lasers, no super tough protagonist and no major sub-plot going into detail about the colossi or that masked druid kind of guy, then this might be alright.
