http://kotaku.com/5187660/what-is-sony-announcing-on-tuesday
| Quote: | Sony dropped Kotaku a line to let us know that something big was going down on Tuesday, March 31st. Could it be the long-rumored price cut is finally upon us?
Or could it be something completely different? Rumors have been doing little twirly things all over the internet over the past few weeks regarding a potential PlayStation 3 price cut, and while our first thought was "Why would they announce it several days after GDC?", apparently they are indeed announcing something several days after GDC. Go figure.
We're leaning towards a price cut, but we've got a sneaking suspicion that it's the PlayStation 2 dropping to $99, and not a cut for the PlayStation 3.
All we know so far is that they're announcing something. There's only one thing to do now. Let the wild speculation begin! What do you think/hope/dream Sony is announcing? |
PS3 pricecut? PS3 slim? I think it will be firmware 2.70 with some major new features, and it will be available as soon as the announcement is made. _________________

Firmware 2.70 with PS2 Software Emulation and a Media Player so you can search songs etc.
That is what I am hoping for. I have three PS3s so price cut does not worry me.
And hopefully Playtv release date for OZ.

Hopefully something good for PS3 owners, not a price cut.
A firmware update with something awesome would be good, I can't really think what else could be interesting for a PS3 owner actually...

I don't think a PS3 owner would find a price cut exciting considering they already have a PS3.
Here's hoping it's a cool firmware update we've all been waiting for that comes out later that day like Nintendo's SD card support for Wii. _________________

well i doubt it will be an announcement for playtv, unless they announce its coming to the ntsc regions, but for us they will probably say nothing about it since its already out in the uk.
have to imagine both price drop and major firmware update. _________________

Has anybody noticed that Sony still haven't yanked out the PS2 virtual memory card slot on the PS3. Even the 40GB PS3 have a PS2 memory card. They could have removed that through a firmware update.
I hope the announcement is something to do with the return of backward compatibility be it through a firmware update, or future PS3 units and end PS2 production for good.

i think they havent removed it because every console has the same firmware, so i dont think they will worry about making different firmware for different console models. _________________

If they removed that I wouldn't be able to save my PS2 game saves. Why the hell would they do that?! _________________

Point made the (two folks at the top).
Sony have stated that they haven't ruled out BC completely and will in the future add some PS2 games as downloadable on PSN.
I really hope it's BC.

I am crossing my fingers and praying to God that it is the ability to play PS2 games on the PS3. PS2 games in 1080P. Sounds good to me! _________________

This may be a stupid question, but this wouldn't change the PS2 games, would it? I mean, they weren't made for 1080P so being able to play on a PS3 would still output like a PS2, right?
Or am I missing something...

My guess it would be like the DVD upscaler thats its included in the PS3, its not proper 1080p but i have found that any DVDs I watch do look alot better through the PS3. This is all of course on the basis that the big announcement actually is PS2 emulation, which would absolutely be awsome. _________________

You guys do realise that PS3 launch console owners have been doing this for a long time? Games are upscaled from 576i/p to 1080i/p and the visuals are not so much improved as made bearable on a HD screen. Although many PS2 games weren't developed with progressive scan or even widescreen displays in mind, so they'll never really look any better than they did through component cables on a flat screen CRT. _________________

Is this even possible? I mean, what with all the brouhaha about the emotion chip surely they must've worked out that a firmware update wouldn't be enough to enable BC. I mean, I hope it is possible, it just seems like a long shot to me. _________________

If BC doesn't come this next firmware update, I can assure you it will come soon, I've said it before in other threads, Debug Versions of Firmware 2.50 and up have BC, however, Sony is waiting until they have a few downloadable games on the PSN so that they actually have the chance to make a profit margin. On top of that, last year, the ESRB rated Rayman: Revolution, a PS2 game, for the PS3 platform.
Also about the Emotion Engine stuff, the reason why we don't have BC on the 40GB now is because using Software Emulation requires testing of EVERY game ever made for the PS2, just as if you were to emulate on a PC. Whilst using the Emotion Engine automatically gives you 100% Compatibility simply because it is the chip that is the core of the PS2. Another note on Emulation, in order to emulate a console, you generally need to have specifications 10x those of the console you wish to emulate. Only reason we can emulate the PS2 and consoles in its generation is because none of their processors are even 1Ghz if you go through there specs, and even their graphics chips aren't that fancy. And they didn't have Dual/Quad Cores back then. However trying to emulate something like the PS3 or XBOX 360 is near impossible and is going to be for a while, especially considering the Cell Broadband Engine. _________________

Every game ever made for the PS2 for a software emulation? I rather they have some which is better than nothing on the major titles just like the 360 software emulation if worse comes to worse. It will take much more longer if they are going to cater for every game out there on the market. Better do it in increments.
I guess it all comes down to Sony's intention in the future, if they want to release PS2 in the PSN or not. The PSN will be a more attraction option if they are going to follow the path of the 360 (which I hope not, but it is possible since the BC support will start to lack and if they are seeing dollar signs on it) _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Hopefully we get the return of backwards compatibility. In addition, I wish they could make backwards compatibility region free. _________________

I actually think that we will have 100% compatibility, Sony now has had more than enough time to test if you think about it, and the new games are probably being made with considerations for the emulator, considering it has been there since 2.50 _________________

I actually think that this will have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with backward compatibility.
Call me a realist.
The rumour in America is a price drop, why are you guys getting so carried away?
It is much too difficult to create an emulator for a system like that now. After all these years, the fastest computers can still only run PS2 games at about 10fps. Yes, sony made both consoles, but that doesn't mean they know how to do it either - if they did, why did the PS3 version with only one of the two chips have problems with so many games, including massive slowdown in MGS3 whenever fire was on the screen? >.>
Without either chip, I can only see any attempt being worse.
The exception to this being the few Xbox games which work well on 360 such as GTA San Andreas, but that is supposedly becuase the Xbox was so much like a PC.
Prove me wrong kids! Prove me wrong. _________________

I hope to god it's B/C. Combined with the inevitable price drop this year, it might make me buy a PS3 by the end of 2009. So many PS2 games I want to get my hands on, being able to play them at 1080p would be a dream come true. _________________
