I'm just getting into Anime and wanted to know some good series or movies to get.
I like Street Fighter, so will get those Anime.
I also like Persona 4, so any Anime like that, eg High School based with a good story would be spot on.
My local Video store has a fair bit of Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, Howl's Moving Castle, Cowboy Bebop and others I can't remember.
So any suggestion would be great. _________________

It depends on what you like. I'm fairly new to the anime scene too and my mate has been trying to get me into animes like Naruto, Bleach, etc. but I don't like the "ninja" animes. I like the ones that have cool storylines, so my faves have been Code Geass and Death Note.
If you are into the fighting style animes, Bleach has been constantly recommended to me.
EDIT: Dragon Ball Z is awesome, but you'd need to start at the very beginning, not sure if your local video-ezy would have that. _________________

Elfen Lied.
Doesn't really fit with what you said you like above, but it is <3.
I also loved Dragon Ball (haven't watched Z yet) and Trigun. _________________

chalk up another Elfin Lied recommendation.
it does feature an absolute craptonne of blood/gore, and quite a lot of nudity, so if there's anyone around who's likely to be offended by that, just be warned.
i also like:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - which is a police series set in the future where almost everyone has some sort of cybernetic implant. it's kinda like a mish-mash of Terminator/Robocop, The Matrix and Shadowrun (minus the magic parts) with some mechs too.
Full Metal Alchemist - closer to your scope defined in the OP.
Hellsing - basically an extension on the Dracula mythology, where Van Helsing's descendants have set up a government-sanctioned organisation to tackle demons and vampires. set in the "near future".
Neon Genesis: Evangelion - at it's core - it's a mech anime. but it's pretty much the biggest mindf**k series you'll probably find. very polarising, some love it, others hate it. i'm the former.
Transformers - if i need to give you a writeup on this, you need to come out from under your rock.
um, i'm sure there's more series i enjoy, but i can't think of any off the top of my head.
i tend to be more into the self-contained series, i don't like the ones that continue ad infinitum (Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, etc.) _________________

Dragon Ball Z is good, except it drags on too long. I mean, it takes Goku like two episodes just to charge up to maximum, then it takes another ten episodes for the battle to finish up.
So be prepared for long anime sessions if you're gona get DB'Z. That being said, its still a pretty good anime. But like many others, it suffers from the 'sky's the limit' thing. The characters just keep getting more powerful. (Power level from 1000 to 1000000 anyone?) _________________

Gantz: Like exploding body parts and high powered non existent weapons that are used to hunt down weird aliens? Hoo-ha!
Elfen Lied: Like arms and legs getting torn off peoples bodies with fountains of blood spraying everywhere? Hoo-ha! *note* little incest.
Dragonball Series: Like fighting, screaming, comedy, a mystical dragon and glowing hair? Hoo-ha!
Zoids: Like big metal animal shaped machines controlled by humans and used in tournaments? Hoo-ha! _________________

Watch it, watch it, watch it! That said, it's a little different to Dragon Ball, but from my experience, people who love Dragon Ball like Dragon Ball Z.
Andy: I'm not sure how interested you would be in Naruto and Bleach, but Full Metal Alchemist is definitely my number 1 recommendation other than those two. It has all the makings of a great anime, a great story which makes you think, a good amount of action, and top notch animation. It's also getting a second series (the original one finished a little while back), which will be aring in Japan very soon.
You say you like the high school setting and Persona, so Persona: Trinity Soul might be perfect for you. The story's pretty decent, though the Persona usage is much more similar to that of the original game than Persona 3 or 4.
If you're interested in manga, both Persona 3 and 4 have their own manga.
Edit: True BurnZ, there's also the alchemy which is a pretty interesting addition that really does a good job of giving the story its structure. _________________

Elfen Lied, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell are all recommendations that I heartily second and third.
Another anime you might want to check out is Cowboy Bebop. The characters in this are some of the best and it also has an awesome jazz soundtrack. I cried at the end of the last episode. People who have watched it will realize why I was heartbroken. _________________

Well my store has Cowboy Bebop, so will check that out.
Not to keen on Dragon Ball Z, as there is alot of episodes to watch.
I will check if my store has Full Metal Alchemist, but it doesn't have any of the other ones suggested.
I saw Grave of the Fireflies last week and it was fantastic. Sad, but fantastic.
Also does anyone know a good place to buy the Street Fighter Anime movies? _________________

Cowboy Bebop is delicious. The combination of awesome scripts, funky music too cool characters combine to make an anime that is accessible to fans and fledgling aficionados of the genre.
Watanabe's followup project: Samurai Champloo is solid, but not as gooD.
I enjoyed Wolf's Rein too which has a similar aesthetic and acoustic to Bebop - because they share character designer and music director (Yoko Kano is my hero). Its a more traditional anime otherwise with anthropomophs that feature wolf and human forms, post apocalyptic settings, flying monstrosities and some magic.
The studio Ghibli stuff is a pleasure to watch. Nausica, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Laputa Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are all super colourful without coming off sickly sweet. Deep characters, antagonists that walk the line between gooD and evil and a shovelfull of Japanese mythology make for adventuresome stories.
Satoshi Kun makes awesome mind bending anime: Paranoia Agent (series), Paprika and Perfect Blue all delve into psychosis. Tokio Godfathers and Millenium Actress are stunningly crafted movies in their own right with characters that are developed as well as they are drawn. Ghibli for adults.
Azumanga Daioh is a too cute chronicle of 7 Japanese middle school girls. Its funny and charming and well worth watching.
And finally my tripped out shojo fave: Utena. Which wont be in your video store. Romantic gender-bending, sword fights in the forest, reused footage all wrapped around oddly juxtaposed Jungian archetypes and symbolism.
And you'd better watch Akira and Ninja Scroll - Classics.

THe problem with Neon Gennesis for anyone comming into watch it now is that it's massivley over rated. It's good but not insanely fantastic like you'll find people claiming.
What animes to reccomend really depend on your taste. For example GIT'S bored me to fucking tears yet people here love it.
Fun but pointless action shows/movies
Dead Leaves
Awesomely hyper kinetic show with an incredibly funky graffiti inspired art style, also has a dude with a giant drill for a penis.
Aachi and Ssipak.
The only show I can think of more insane then Dead Leaves. Just... wow. Some of the best animated fight scenes I've ever seen. Also a verry cool verry distinctive art style.
FLCL
There is alot in this show for only 6 eppisodes, but it's still got some insane action sequences in and is fun without asking too much.
Spriggian
Has a dude running up the side of a mountin dragging a car mounted chain gun shooting a fat dude. It's awesome. Retarded but awesome. Gets a bit wanky at the end though.
If you're looking at the Street Fighter movies, Alpha and SF2 are both great, Generations is lame though I wouldn't recomend it. _________________

Evangelion is worthy of all the praise it gets though. It really is just that good. The new movies are the perfect way to watch it if you want to skip out on half of the deeper stuff, and just want COOL ROBOTOS.
GITS is also pretty cool if you like to think while watching, and trying to unravel things in your mind as it happens on screen. The fact that it's also post-cyberpunk is pretty cool.
Spriggian is horrible, and not worth the money.
I second the recommendation for Fullmetal Alchemist. It's just a really fun awesome series. Infact, I might start rewatching it too.

It’s one of the most pretentious and wanky shows I’ve ever seen, it’s so fucking full of itself it’s ridiculous.
Spriggan is like Total Recall, it thinks it’s being really deep and introspective but people are only watching it for the chick with three tits and arnies face exploding.
It’s got some gorgeous action sequences and the animation for the most part is brilliant, just ignore the plot cause it’s retarded. _________________

i love NGE. really love it. i think it was the first Anime series i bought on DVD, and is still probably my favourite of all the shows i've collected.
but i agree it's pretty pretentious and wanky, and in a genre that, by and large, is full of pretentious and wanky shows/films, that says a lot.
perhaps i'm just pretentious and wanky enough that it doesn't bother me. _________________

NGE was the first anime series I ever watched, and at the time it blew my fucking mind. Of course at the time I was 13 and thought Johnny The Homicidal Maniac was brilliant satire (It isn’t). Upon rewatching it today I can’t fucking stand it.
Deconstruction is one thing, creating a cast of thoroughly unlikeable characters then expecting me to give two shits about there emotional trauma is another.
The Remix movies from what I’ve seen are pretty good though, after watching the first one instead of wanting someone to just backhand Shinji I actually sympathised with him wich is an immediate plus. _________________

Bleach - 211+ eps - a few movies and an OVA
Death Note - 37eps - 3 live action movies(i havn't bothered, go for the anime)
Full Metal Alchemist - 51eps - 1movie
Trigun - 26eps
Cowboy Bebop - 26eps - 1movie
Please Note: Your require plenty of time to watch Bleach as 211 eps and still counting, plus there is quite alot of filler so maybe just watch the other animes if time is a concern.
You can check the following site for streaming eps etc:
thebigm edit: can't link to those here
Enjoy

Tell me what does thou think of Hellsing, Rah-Xephon and Gasaraki?
Right now you've taken a biblical pretext in NGE in that it's so full of itself, biblical pretext and underlying war with Spriggan, where it could be construed that religious subtexts are crap when dealing with Anime because they are often too deep in their execution.
Either way not something I'd be recommending to get someone into Anime, sure its a piece most have to see at least once but eh most people miss the point and bitch at Shinji being a wimp and jerking off in hospitals.
I'd try Excel Saga, Martian Successor Nadesico, Cowboy Bebop / Outlaw Star and Jin-Roh as they should cover most bases with how Anime is done in regards to comedies, mechs, intrigue, space, military & storytelling, musical emotion, ecchi and general undesirable elements you will have to deal with so that you can then branch out to things you might like or things you found interesting at a later date.
Personally speaking, my first three Animes were;
Macross
Transformers
Tekkaman Blade
Which would promptly be the big giant robot class, so I'm entirely biased in that regard. I do agree however that the Cowboy bebop soundtrack and Yoko Kanno in general are entirely badass, I was lucky enough to nab a limited edition (HA! As if) boxset of 5 cds from CB, Yoko also worked on the GitS:SAC compilation. But also a good soundtrack and equally as great artwork (GONZO) would be Last Exile, although this is entirely specialist with planes and determination through adversity and sorrow, so might not be to liking.

The religious pretext in NGE is absolute shit, it means nothing. It's essentialy window dressing. It's not deep at all, it basicly ammounts to "We took some biblical names and made our explosions look like crosses"
Though to answer your question, loved Hellsing, second half kind of got weird though and the ending sucked, am loving hellsing ultimate, Haven't seen Rah-Xephon, watched one eppisode of Gasaraki didn't really dig it, think I might have come in half way through or something though. Didn't do anything for me to want to watch the rest.

God I'm so sick of this argument, It's not that I don't get NGE, it's that I don't like it. The charecter are unlikeable, the pacing is horrible, the animation quality varies from fantastic to 'slide show'
NGE Remix however does fix a lot of these problems, the pacing is a major one that really needed to be fixed. _________________

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) is a good 'ol anime. Not everyone's cup of tea though. More of a Drama/Comedy kind. One of my favourites though.

Where's Itachi and him recommending Naruto in big bold neon signage?
I usually like all the mecha show Gundam and Macross series to name 2. Also enjoy the occassional sporting type anime, like Hajime No Ippo (boxing) and Initial D (street racing - well more like downhill car racing).
Videogame to anime, it usually doesn't translate so well, Persona anime wasn't that good (it was pretty boring). Devil May Cry anime I liked but I know a few people who didn't like it so I guess that's just personal taste.
NGE, that horse is 100ft underground but with today's technology we will find new ways to beat it.
Miyazaki's movies are usually of good quality, you can't really miss with him, so anything like Nausicaa, Laputa, Porco Rosso, Monoke Hime, Spirited Within (just to name a few), etc, the list goes on.
If you're just getting into anime, there's a Melbourne Supanova Convention (at the Melbourne Royal Showground) coming this weekend and Brisbane's turn the following weekend - feel free to check it out.

Heressssssss Itachiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
My Top 5 anime
Number 1
Of course its Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden. Back in the day when i was upset dragon ball z ended i thougth shit will there be anything as good as that anime. Luckily i came across Naruto and thought it was amazingggg. If you do pick up naruto don't watch the fillers.
Number 2
Bleach such an amazing anime imo. I am pretty sure people before me has explained what its about but damn its good. If you do pick up bleach i will tell you what i told efo and many other people the first 20 episodes are shit! There so shit i see them as fillers but you need to watch them. If you can get past the 20th episode you will be in heaven trust me.
Number 3
Dragon Ball Z ahhhh such a great anime. I remember the day when channel 10 use to piss me off when they kept repeating it when they go to the spirit ball. I remember shaking in this anime it was so good. I truly recommend this anime!
Number 4
Back in the day when i got sick and tired of all the action anime i wanted something different! I got that with genshiken. This is what its about:
| Quote: | | Genshiken follows the lives of a group of college students drawn together by their shared hobbies, and the trials and adventures associated with being otaku. The story begins with the introduction of Kanji Sasahara, a shy, confidence-lacking freshman who on club day at university, decides to join a club he would actually enjoy, Genshiken. Over his four years at Shiiou University, Sasahara comes to accept himself for who he is and loses the inhibitions and guilt he once felt and associated with otaku culture, becoming an enthusiastic clubmember, and for a time, a capable club president. As the story of Genshiken progresses, focus is also placed on Saki Kasukabe, a determined non-otaku who initially struggles to drag her boyfriend out of the club, and Chika Ogiue, a self-professed otaku-hater who feels a deep-seated shame and self-loathing toward her own interests and hobbies. |
Basically its an amazing anime when you get sick and tired of the action anime!
Number 5
This is my secret love heheh. Yu-Gi-Oh ohhh boy did the i love this show or what. I have always loved cards and to see a show based around a card game i was like HOLY ITACHIIIIIII. I quickly started playing yugioh and really enjoying the anime.
That's it for me cheers _________________
