Well there goes my reason for getting a PSP now.
Apart from my other complaint about this, being about second hand games, it also means that we most likely be paying premium amounts for content/games to download; and with out prehistoric net plans and whatnot, I see this as another failure.

I think downloads could replace UMD pretty well (in general). With UMD having a maximum capacity of 1.80 GB (dual layer), that's not too rediculous a download each month, but that depends on wheather they'll need more storage for games with the PSP2. And that's just me, its certainly not the best idea for the whole of Australia... but they never really think of us when they come up with these ideas do they. _________________

It's all welll and good but how much will they charge for old PSP games? You can find second hand games for under $15 for the really old PSP titles. Woulnd't wanna pay more than that.

I'd rather that they sold games in retail still, but on flash memory.
A PSP with two memory stick slots (One for games, one for all the other crap like saves, movies, music etc), 2 thumbsticks in the more natural upper half of the system, and possibly a touch screen would be ultimate win. _________________

Just wish Sony would announce it so all these rumours be quiet, i mean we know its coming there's no point in not announcing it.

When the day comes that all games are sold in this fashion, I will be very sad. I really love a hard copy. There's nothing like unwrapping/opening a game case for the first time.

Indeed. But this sounds very fishy to me. "I have a friend who is working on it right now!"
Uhuh. Sure. And you also work for Acclaim. Eggs on your face mister.
It might been remotely credible if he hadn't declared it to be out this year and lack physical media basically resulting in most consumers steering clear. Yes, I said it again. Most people don't want digital distribution, don't know what it is, how to use it, or just don't give a toss. People like discs, carts, whatever, just as long as they can go into a store to get it. That is the average consumer and that is not changing any time soon.
Sony are a business because their goal is to make money. They will make a lot, lot more money by leaving physical media in the loop. That's just how it is _________________

Ditto, i'll hate the day when digital downloads take over completely.
I hope they keep some sort of 'hard copy' of the game around. mutliple memory stick slots sounds good to me. _________________

I'm all for getting rid of physical copies. Means cheaper product, its better for the environment, and I'm already accustomed to it by things like iTunes and last.fm anyways. I think I'd get used to it pretty quickly. Even if it meant I had to go to a digital stop'n'swop station to get new games.
It might even mean we buy less bull crap and just buy games we really want to play, rather than ones we want to collect. _________________

Exactly iTunes is massive, Xbox Live Arcade is massive, people are well and truly ready for digital downloads. The only real issue for Aussies is the size of the games with our crappy download limits (particularly if you use wireles internet) but I am sure that can be addressed with compression or something.
I for one think having no UMD / carts to cary around is a great idea, the UMD's are too bulky to cary many around and while the DS carts are nice and small I am always concerend that they will get lost. Being able to store a bunch of games on internal memory or even a memory card sounds like a great idea. _________________ Never put a gamer in charge of the office IT.

The iPhone has proven that people do want downloads straight to their device. Sega has stated Super Monkey Ball for iPhone has been one of their most profitable games ever.

A PS3 add-on that lets you rip PSP UMDs to put onto the PSP2 would be totally ace. Of course they won't do it out of some absurd fear of piracy (since the things are already getting pirated anyway), but it'd be nice...

I'm all for digital distribution in portables. I like having a physical copy too, but I'd rather be able to carry my whole collection of games around easily.

Why would they bring out a new PSP this year that doesn't take advantage of the 5 AAA titles they announced this week? Makes absolutely no sense at all. Doesn't help that he is CCO at Acclaim. _________________

Hmm... my next handheld purchase will either be this or and Ipod Touch/ Iphone.
Just depends on pricing and portability i guess.
If they give this a few more features, like whats been on the net (its kind of like a hiptop PSP!) i'd be all over it. But the PSP is quite a chunk to take around just for handheld games, in my opinion anyway.
They should make it like a business phone kind of thing that plays games and is more game oriented. They'd get quite a market their- wouldn't budge the iphone but i could see it as being profitable

Then I may as well get a PSP, considering it'll be cheaper. So what if PSP2 is better? A portable PS2-like system still sounds great to me. _________________

I highly doubt there's a "PSP2", if anything expect another "PSP-400x" revision. Guess we'll have to wait until E3.

Actually it makes a hell of a lot of sense.
If they were to release a PSP2 now, without having announced those games for the PSP, most people wouldn't even bother with the PSP2 because they'd think it would end up going the same way as the PSP and Sony wouldn't support it.
But if they release a heap of AAA titles just before they announce the PSP2 it will bring confidence in Sony and how they will support the PSP2 right up. Making sure that the PSP2 should hopefully have heaps of support at launch and for a while onwards. _________________
